I love gaining new experiences and trying new activities that I have never done before, but without a doubt, this was the worst experience I have ever had. I have recently finished my MSc and I am used to long working hours (12-16 hours), so starting at 6:30 am till 10:30 pm on election day was not really bothering me. What made my day and my partner's day really bad was that we were the only two people at the hospital. There were two more people but they were supposed to go bed-to- bed and collect votes from patients. In the morning, one of the supervisors brought us the laptop, ballots and other stuff. She left around 9:00 am and told us she will be back soon so that we can take a washroom break. She left and came back at 8:00 pm ( so 11 hours later!).
Around noon, neither of us could tolerate anymore and asked people in the line to excuse us so we could run to the washroom one by one. Even then, some people were not happy that they had to wait 2 minutes longer so we could go to the washroom. 
Thank God, the two VOs who were collecting votes bed-to- bed came down around 3 pm so we could take literally 5 minutes lunch break.
So starting 6:30am till 10:30pm, we only had 5 minutes break, and I don't even call that a break for myself because I was the voting officer and I couldn't really leave. So I just stood by the table and quickly ate while the other person started registering the clients. The line-up started before 8:00pm and lasted till 8:00pm. Then we had to count the ballots and pack up.  Once we got to the office to do the final countdown, there was no table for us to sit. So after a very long day, we had to wait for about 30 minutes so that other people finish their countdown and then we could sit. It was really embarrassing. It was not difficult to know how many people work that day and how many table they need to have in advance, so that when we arrive, we can just start counting instead of waiting. 
I got home at 11:00 pm and told myself I will never do this again. It seems that no one really cares about voting official's health.

I worked as a voting officer. It is, by its nature, occasional work only. The training is thorough, and there are a lot of resource people there to help you learn and to support your work at the job. They can answer questions, and offer lots of assistance all day long (or for extended days if you work at Advance Polls) and help you deal with any sorts of unexpected issues that might arise.

You are expected to process voters quickly and accurately and to cooperate with instructions from supervisors and to be pleasant to all voters even though the work can be stressful at times, due to the fast pace and minimal break opportunities.

This is a great chance to get work experience and to learn new skills. It is a really long work day, however. Breaks are minimal and based on time availability, that is, during slower voter turnout times. Also, you need to be prepared with all the food and drinks you will need for a full day, and it is important to bring non-perishable food or to bring your own food cooler, as there is no refrigeration. You are sitting down for up to twelve hours or more, although you are allowed to bring a cushion to sit on.

This is a great casual employment opportunity for anyone who is interested in the election process and who wants to offer excellent guest service.

Keep in mind that this is a salaried position, and that the pay cannot be negotiated, and that there is no overtime pay.

When I worked the election I would normally show up fifteen minutes early to set up my polling station, then at eight in the morning the doors would open for people to vote. When a person came in, I would look at their two pieces of ID and then get them registered to vote. After they went to the back booth to vote, I would make sure the voting slip was still the same by matching the numbers and then, give it back to the voter to put in the box. this would typically go on from eight am to eight pm. From working the election I learned more about the election and how it works. I also learned that if you are working it you can't wear any clothes that might influence the voters like, the colours of any of the nominees or anything supporting one. The management were very kind and treated me great when I was learning how to do everything the job entails. The workplace culture was also a nice environment. The hardest part of the job was not talking about the election when someone asks you about it because you weren't aloud to give your opinion on it and had to tell the person they were not aloud to talk about it in the voting room. The most enjoyable part of the job was getting to learn more about the election and how it works. I was able to see how it works when I wasn't able to vote and now that I am the age to vote have a better understanding.

Periodic employment. Fairly fast payment.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Parksville Qualicum Beach office required specific dress code. Had to go shopping for non-jean pants, no hoodies were permitted. Worked in very cold hall with the doors open for 12 hours so I had to purchase thick black (non-jean) pants and it was ridiculous not too allow a hoodie for my head.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Poor. Long time supervisor who didn't actually know how to to the job challenged me on the process I knew better than him. He actually accused me of rushing in my count of my handful of votes - that I did carefully and accurately in full view of scrutineers with my election partner. The process was tedious and I was essentially training my boss. Except he didn't want to learn. And he tried to enforce the dress code of no jeans and no hoodies. He got mad at me for parking in a far corner of a front parking lot instead of some other side of the building I was unaware of. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long, cold and tedious with poorly trained, power tripping supervisor.

Honestly, when I first came to this page and I saw the rating for this company is so high (especially for the management),  I was thrilled because so many people enjoyed working for this company. I recently worked as an IDP for this company and it was such a big honor to do some contribution for the provincial general election. I want to give tons of credits to the management, and I had the best bosses in my life. Using my own supervisor as an example, he was extremely gentle, professional and supportive. He created such a enjoyable, friendly and inclusive work environment and I can pretty much tell the whole team enjoyed working for him. The director above my supervisor was also a very sweet lady, as she would usually come to visit the team and send encouragement to us, although she didn't directly work with us. Outstanding management plus a group of wonderful lovely colleagues, I can't ask for more. As an former employee, I feel being respected and valued. Hopefully one day I can work for them again !!!

It was a very memorable experience working for elections BC.
I enjoyed working with people and learned a lot about filing of important government documents and procedures and gained confidence when directing voters on where to go. The hardest part of the job would be the time we spent having to assess which voting station the unregistered voters would go to because the books were out of order and people were becoming upset about the wait. I took the initiative to take voters names and information in a new voting book and this sped up the waiting process for voters. My team and I handled this with fine skill and patience and seen to it that all voters found a new voting station and were reassured they would be seen soon. I left the job at the end of the day feeling satisfied in my people skills and my problem solving skills.

Great management. Allot of online training to do in a very short period of time. Must be a self starter, motivated every day and willing to put in extra hours especially during the last couple of weeks before Election Day.  Great environment, we are in this together attitude. Everyone has their job tasks, actually the processes are quite mature. Always learnings to take away. Overall great experience and would recommend to anyone who is a self starter, adaptable to changing processes or policies.

This was just a one day job which is on voting day. I had a partner and our job was to make sure they were allowed to vote, take their ID , give a ballet and let them vote. At the end of the day we counted up the ballets , put the tables away and went home. My partner was great , very funny, we actually had alot in common I had a great time. The hardest part of the job is how long it is, you start at 7 am and finish at 9 pm. The most enjoyable part was meeting all these new people with great stories. I love learning new things that people have to offer.

lineups, impatient people, which are very minor compared to most jobs

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's a serious job, but you can have fun with it

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Anything & everything. The joy of seeing someone so exciting to vote for the first time to people intentionally spoiling ballots.

This work is fun and exciting, but not for everyone.  You have to flexible, but firm.  A people person who is also able to follow guidelines and can be firm when necessary.  It can be intense even stressful at times.  Gives you the chance to see how the system works from a front line perspective. Long hours but only for short period of time (12-14 hour days for a week).  Their system and training is well laid out.  This is work one can do on and off for years.
