Working at Emcon wasn't a good fit for me. Too much paperwork and the company struggles with the same issues every year but rarely does anything untilits a last minute panic. Working here was bad for my mental health and in turn I stopped caring about my high personal standard of work.  
I don't feel like there is much organization and teamwork.
Driving for Emcon offers great pay and work life blance lots of time off in the summer if you manage to become year round. 
Wages for management are far too low for the cost of living and expectation to be on call responding to accidents. 
I would like to see a roll over of senior management to bring in fresh ideas from more modern workplaces. Many of the existing management have been with emcon for 15+ years and as a result are not familiar with how other construction companies have modernized. 

Worked  this past winter as a seasonal snow plow operator. It wasn't a very enjoyable experience,the only good thing was the other operators that I worked with,they were all a great bunch of guys for the most part. Management wasn't that great,they care more about looking good to clients then they do about their employees.Camp was horrible,was told it was a new camp and it turned out to be a 20+ year old oil sands camp,everyone was constantly getting sick,food was gross,majority of everyone's pay check went towards takeout. Many complaints were lodged by most of the guys I worked with,and we were promised changes,but nothing changed.Some guys were even told by supervisors if they don't like it,there was always planes flying out every day.

A typical day at work is busy but rewarding, with tasks that challenge and push you to grow. I've learned a lot about teamwork, problem-solving, and safety protocols. Management is supportive, providing clear direction while encouraging independence. The workplace culture is positive and collaborative, making it easy to connect with colleagues. The hardest part of the job can be managing high-pressure situations, but the most enjoyable aspect is the sense of accomplishment when a job is well done, knowing you're part of a team that values safety and quality.

The pay is mediocre at best, especially for being on call 24/7 in the winter. The workplace morale is at a crippling low, constant bullying from coworkers but nothing being done because foremen play the favourites game. And absolutely clueless managment. Upper Management does not know how to manage their own bowel movements let alone a company. It seems like the more clueless and incompetent you are the further you make it up the ladder. Equipment breaks down pretty much everytime you use it and its always the blame game every time it breaks. I would not want to get a level 1 inspection in any of their trucks or equipment, forced to run unsafe equipment and forced to run well past the federal HOS.

I've been working seasonally for Emcon Hamilton for 3 years. The job is perfect for my situation. We start on Standby on November 1st and work till approx. April 15th. There is a Standby pay that you receive weekly even if there is no snow. The management is very fair and easy to get along with. Your on call 24 hrs a day and are expected to work 12 hrs if your brought in for a snow event.  The guys working there are a good group and always ready to help out if needed. The toughest part of the job is coming back in for another shift during a storm. 12 hrs on then 12 hrs off then back in again for another shift.
The Supervisor is a great guy and very generous with the bbq`s and the pizza.

Where to start... Some equipment was left over from the Carillion days, same with some of management. Some of the coworkers made the day worth it though there were some that made me want to find the door and quick. Between working for a shop that was short staffed combined with the kind of ignorant management that will either treat you like you're in kindergarten, act like everyone should worship the ground they walk on while making things worse, and/or remind you that you are replaceable, I wouldn't even recommend working here to my worst enemy.

When the snow flies you are expected to work. The job can be stressful at times driving in the worst weather conditions but that is what you signed up for. They have two classification of drivers STANDBY or ON CALL you get to choose which one suits your life style. The job is seasonal so you know that when winter is over you are either looking for another job or you are going to enjoy your summer.

Don’t expect to work the role you’re hired for, they love using the line “other duties as assigned”. Management doesn’t listen to employees, false sense of care about your safety, double standards and favouritism run rampant. Same management from Carillion days and if you know anything about the background of that company, you know why it went bankrupt. Never any logic to the work, many employees love doing nothing and making it someone else’s work to do. In the end, use it as a stepping stone for something else or to bridge the times of uncertain work, not a place you will want to stay long term.

Having motoring public expecting the roads to be back to pavement immediately 
Public drive to fast, go in the ditch, then blame us. Saying its road conditions.

Toxic, long hrs, not given enough equipment and manpower to do the job properly

Listening to a bunch of grown men act like 2 yr olds

The nice thing about this place is due to it being union, it’s pretty laid back. Most of the guys are decent. Pay isn’t the worst, still better than the garbage wages most truck drivers are making these days, but the pay could be better. This company will hire you as “Seasonal/Part Time” to get out of providing you with benefits. Upper management is like a headless chicken running around after it just had its head chopped off, they have no idea what they’re doing, and they are the main source of the company’s problens.
