The plant supervisor and operations supervisor are not fit for their jobs. They are very inexperienced, and it shows in how they run the place and treat people. Most folks walk around like zombies because they aren’t motivated or treated well enough to care. The slightest mistake will result in you getting written up as well. So most also act like they’re walking on egg shells so as to not bring any attention to themselves. 

They will also interrogate/harass you any time they patrol around the facility. They’ll ask what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, your thought train, etc..., and if they don’t like your answer, they’ll tell you to go clean floors for the rest of your shift. Or they’ll write you up. They aren’t nice in any of this either - they are aggressive and want to flex their power over you. That’s mostly how they act towards workers - just flexing their position and power, mentally beating you to a pulp, especially if they don’t like you. 

They don’t know how to effectively communicate either - a consequence of their inexperience. The amount of miscommunication in this facility is going to end up costing someone a limb one day. There have been a lot of near misses and injuries because of it already. Plus, you’ll run the risk of getting written up if even they miscommunicate with you. 

They say they are trying to be transparent in their communications with you, but they seem to forget what being transparent actually is in conversation: state your intentions directly, give straight answers and don’t lie. They of course don’t do any of that. They’ll lie straight to your face if you ask why, for instance, you aren’t allowed to do something within the scope of your job description, and part of the reason why you were hired firstly. 

The concept for the company and their mission is very good. It is innovative and they are trying to do something good. However, all of it will be for nothing because of the few people that run the Balzac facility. This place is brand new and already the staff turnover is crazy high. 

It’s also kind of telling when you also see the CEO of the company doing more work than the 2 guys that manage the place. He doesn’t patrol around and interrogate workers, nor is he against the occasional bits of fun like the 2 guys. 

You aren’t allowed to laugh or have bits of humanly fun otherwise. No phones on the work floor either - even if, say, a family member passed and you took the call for that on the floor, you’ll be instantly written up for that. 

All of the workers on the floor are great, though. When the 2 plant managers aren’t in, everybody is more relaxed and happy and not afraid. 

Alas, until the company hires people that actually have experience running an industrial facility, this place will be an absolute nightmare to work at. None of the good things this company is or does apply because the people that run it aren’t quality people.

Management is poor, worst management I have ever worked for. Managers that have no idea what they are doing or what is going on and always gaslighting staff. Other managers aren't much better. The one will kick you down while already low, others will talk to you disrespectfully. There are a few good managers there that in my opinion deserve better themselves. 

There is a good job security if you are willing to stay. It is hard to stay motivated due to the nature of the work and the lack of management. If management tried to motivate their people, paid a little better, they probably would keep them onboard. It is a dirty job, cleaning up fly feces, scooping rotten food. It is a heavy job, shoveling feed, shoveling trays, moving heavy totes around, lifting 20kg ingredient bags. It is a stinky job, flies stink, they produce a lot of ammonia gasses and their feces smells bad, the rotten fermenting feed they eat is not pleasant at all.

The work culture can be pretty stressful and it felt like management didn't appreciate the time and effort that went into the work. It is a fast pace environment, where sometime it seemed like there was never enough time to finish a task. flies are considered live stock, so the task had to get done no matter what. 

Poor work/life balance. If you're unlucky you will be working all weekends and never have a stat holiday off, unless you take a vacation day.  This can be pretty stressful and hard to build a personal life. It also causes a lot people to call in sick in the weekends. 

The ammonia gasses in the air was also a big issue. The amount of gasses was still under Albertan regulations, but every day I went home with dry skin, hair and irritated eyes. it can't be good for a person long term.

The salary is not that great. what I have discovered is that there is better work out there that pays better and has better benefits.


The mistake of my life was working for Enterra feed. The place is run by a few kids who came to Calgary from vancouver for the job. The engineering manager ( who I thought he is a high school kid when I first saw him) knows nothing about engineering, all he does is showing off as he is mr big shot. Every piece of equipment was designed in a stupid way and he tries hard to make it work by forcing employees to work extra hours without paying overtime. The plant manager gives me stupid looks when I leave on time because he wants people to work extra time with no pay to prove they are good, he has no experience and knows nothing about management, all he does is walk around with a clipboard. The place is not safe and full of bacteria and god know what else. A supervisor who have never seen big industrial macinary stupidly stuck a plate in an augur while it was running and slashed his hand open. Then he came to work second day or he will be fired.

Ran by very inexperienced executives, nobody knows what they are doing, higher ups micomanage everyone working in the plant. Everythings changes daily without anyone being informed. Zero communication. Machinery breaking down daily. Not at all worth the minimal pay they pay you to do. Don't call in sick. Secretary will put you on a month probation. But then your told not to come in sick double edged sword. You are being watched on cameras all day. Dont report anything because noone listens. Worst job ive ever had in my life. Horrible toxic work enviroment. 

it is a medium size proof of concept. great idea for recycling and creating feed for fish farming. 
but you got to be ok with flies the size of hornets on you all the time
and food waste and maggots everywhere.   

problems with upper management. what direction to take the bunsness. ok employer for production workers, they don't know what direction to take the setup or maintenance department. when they change management they change maintenance crew.

Management, management, management. Very Unprofessional. They are manipulative, play too many games, gas light staff, and do not listen. They are just plain lazy. Their narrow field of vision is tightly focused on greed which makes them unable to see the bigger picture. They lack the ability to care about the people who make this place work which is why people give up, get stressed out and leave.

Everyday is fun and busy day. Everyday I set a goal to reach depends on the harvest and finish everything. So I learned time management and multi-tasking at the same time. I love the culture of the work. The cycle of the process is very interesting. In my opinion, would say there are no hard part of the job because I enjoy what I do and I always find my job to be fun.

This company gave me the chance to have more time for family and provide as well. Not a working environment for everyone with the production, but still better than some workplaces I have worked at.

Incompetent leadership. Management oblivious of how worker's real conditions are. People getting promoted just because they lick their superior's butts. This place is a joke. Don't even bother applying to this company.

The workplace culture here was great. Filled with millennials, honest coworkers. Equipment is good, and is constantly being approved upon. The management is are all good, down-to-earth individuals as well.
