Escape Manor

Typical day at work: Varies depending on time of day and day of the week, but typically keeps you on your toes. It's an interesting mix of the work being fairly repetitive (launch, exit, reset, launch, exit, reset...), yet no day is the same. A lot is expected of you, but if you are able to rise to the challenge on-site management will express gratitude freely and often. If you thrive in chaos you'll do well (and I mean that sincerely, not passive-aggressively)!

Management: On-site management at my location are all truly lovely and work very hard. Some corporate management are great too, but I've also heard of and witnessed a lot of iffy things about some of the others. Thankfully the on-site management is what will affect your day-to-day most.

Workplace culture: Overall I've never seen a more authentic "work hard and play hard" culture. Again, a lot is expected of you, but if you're trying your best and working hard you'll be surrounded by a supportive team and management. However, if you're prone to slacking off or are just generally not a good fit, it is common for people to be let go for that (especially if they are still in probation). This does make the turnover a little higher than ideal, and I don't think anyone feels 100% "safe". 

Hardest part of the job: I wouldn't say anything is particularly difficult... maybe the stress of events season (November and December)? But I believe they are looking at staffing better next year now that they saw how intense and demanding it was this year, so that may no longer be relevant!

Most enjoyable part of the job: The people you work with and the energy. The team is super close knit and willing to help out whenever possible, so you never feel alone if an issue arises. And the energy in the "backstage" area is immaculate; everyone just has fun between their work tasks because they genuinely enjoy spending time with their coworkers.

I was very excited about this job, I even turned down other offers so I could work here.  I have unique working experiences and skills that fit well with the job requirements and I very easily could've excelled in the work.  However, I showed up for my 8th shift only to be informed that I was being let go.  There was no warning, no inkling that there was any issue, I was never told that I was doing anything wrong.  I had never received any feedback in the grand total of 7 days I actually worked, even after performing my duties in front of the Manager for him to critique he said nothing - I don't know how else I was to interpret this other than what I was doing was right.

As great as the work itself was and as friendly as the people were, they seem to have very high standards for training yet offer no real guidance nor feedback during your training period.  They expect improvement without giving you  the necessary tools to succeed, its sink or swim.  Even if you do improve at a decent pace (as I had been), they don't care.  Apparently, if you do not meet their very specific standards - standards they never actually tell you about - then they will cut you without any opportunity to do better.

I cannot in good faith recommend anyone to work here despite the pros as there's a very good chance it would just be a waste of your time.

Days are usually fine when the regional manager isn't around. He constantly breathes down your neck and complains about any singular mishap you do.
Management as a whole also clearly plays favourites. Constant threat of being written up for being late but when a team lead is late three times in a row they don't even get a slap on the wrist.
They also fire people who actually care about the employees and keep on those who would rather suck up to upper management rather than listen to peoples issues and try to build upon them.

Things constantly change and its extremely frustrating, nothing is ever in stone and the rules are constantly changing to your dismay and if you try to bring it up that you were told otherwise management still blames you. 

Higher ups also seem to have little to no regard for mental or even sometimes physical health of employees.  Having a bad day at home but still need to come into work so you can pay for rent? Don't let your home issues be known or you'll be told to leave your feelings back at home and not bring them into the workplace. 

On days when (usually the regional manager isn't around.) everything is running nice it can be great! Your co-workers are always a blast to be around and you'll always find something to talk about or do. Just pray certain individuals aren't around.

I had the pleasure of working at Escape Manor for six wonderful years, and it was truly an exceptional experience. From the caring management to the dynamic atmosphere, Escape Manor exceeded my expectations in every way!!

One of the standout qualities of EM is its management team, who genuinely cared for their staff. They organized regular staff outings, touch bases, and voluntary workshops, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork among us employees. This dedication to staff well-being made me feel valued and appreciated, leading me to continue working there even after securing a full-time job elsewhere.

The flexibility of scheduling at EM was unparalleled. Despite being a casual employee, I always felt accommodated when requesting time off. The management never hesitated to accommodate my schedule, which allowed me to balance work with other commitments.

Beyond the exceptional management and flexibility, EM offered invaluable learning opportunities. While honing my customer service and hospitality skills, I also acquired unexpected skills such as using tools, fixing room elements, and enhancing memory and quick thinking abilities through lock manipulation and clue resetting. The experience at EM was not just about work; it was an opportunity for personal and professional growth in a fun and dynamic environment.

I have worked at Escape Manor for 2 years now and it is by far the most meaningful job I've ever had. The team I work with in Hamilton are some of the best people I have ever met, I look forward to going to work every day because of them. Despite what some of the negative reviews say, the owners and upper management of Escape Manor truly care about their employees and go out of their way to show their support. For example, when the CEO & CMO come for their regular check-ins to our venue they spend the entire shift with us helping with various tasks (rather than just sitting and critiquing). The regional manager has also gone out of his way to help me grow as a leader and offer his assistance whenever I have needed it!

There are certainly challenges as per any job (especially the hospitality industry), but Escape Manor cultivates a team and environment that provides more support than most. My personal experience has been incredibly positive, and I would happily recommend EM to anyone looking for a fun and dynamic workplace!

When I started it was great, super fun. As management changed and upper management became greedier and started micromanaging more and more, it became very toxic. CEO and owners are oblivious to how bad the work culture is in venues. Middle management enforces unrealistic expectations, and for employees to be everywhere at once. Absolutely no consideration is put into how things can go wrong for hosts. 

We are expected to be perfect all the time and when things break due to natural wear and tear, or due to cheap materials because of the company’s frugality, it’s us who get in trouble. Hosts are expected to be able to run, hint, reset (and fix if needed), up to 4 rooms by themselves in a single cycle (one hour). 

This place needs a seriously hard reset on the expectations put on hosts in order to see the positive change in atmosphere that they so desperately need. 

In fairness, the training at this company was good in areas, however, they had very high expectations for someone like me who had no previous experience in bartending nor serving. I was told by management that I was given 3 months to really hone in on the craft of serving before they made their decision to keep me there or not, but I wasn't given that opportunity and it was cut short with no notice at all. I also tried to endure extreme knee pain from all the stairs I needed to travel in an 8 hour shift; I took some needed time off to try to treat it through physio which costed a hefty penny, but was fired in the process of getting back up to speed. This job was unfair to me and the management was extremely closed off  and I always felt in the dark no matter the time. A very two faced establishment if you don't like to put on a fake smile and suck up to the employers. 

I started here last summer at one of their locations. Very happy to hear they're expanding into Toronto. 4 awesome guys who have created a really great fun atmosphere to work at. A job you'll never really complain about if you don't mind being on your feet and constantly interacting with people. 

If you're a people person, this is the job for you! The managers really make you feel like you're one of them and part of a family. Love working here and will continue to do so! 

However, that being said, sometimes they (the managers) don't take your suggestions or opinions seriously since they have their own way of doing things.

The best company I've ever worked for. I was passionate about the business from the moment I started to the day I left. The people and the management and the owners are all wonderful people which cultivated such an amazing work environment. If it weren't for the fact that I was offered a position with a pay I couldn't refuse, I would of happily stayed.

Would strongly recommend any position at this company as someone who has worked most of them.

My tenure at Escape Manor lasted around 5 years, and I can genuinely say that the company played a crucial role in fostering my professional development while also giving me the tools to express myself creatively. 

Along with the constructive feedback and guidance provided by my leaders, I also left Escape Manor with great friendships and a strong network.
