•  My role is a hybrid role where I have to juggle two roles. My first mandate is to manage 50 in house brands from a day to day basis. These duties include approving graphics and logo usuage from external contacts by following our brand guidelines. I am also involved with managing all marketing collateral that is used in our department by creating POP for trade shows.  The other part of my role includes products development. I work very closely with our Product Managers to come up with design and construction concepts while keeping up with the newest trends. I am also required to provide a complete visual concept, which includes Cads, product packaging 

• My diverse roles in this position have taught me to work in a calm and efficient manner under pressure. I understand the level of professionalism and communication required for a successful long-term career in this field and the importance of working with co-workers and being a team player. Time management is crucial when you are dealing with multiple projects all at once and prioritization is key. 

• The hardest part of my job would be dealing with over sea vendors. I deal with them on a day to day basis when I'm developing products.  Communication is sometimes a struggle but I have learned visual communication,  along with clear direct messages are the best solution to this problem. 

•  Opening up a fresh new page of a design program; trend and market research; not knowing where my ideas will take me and seeing the final product from concept to finish. Actually walking into the stores to see my designs being sold is what motivates me to work and develop my design skills.

Overall, a good experience that ended poorly due to lack of clear leadership and direction. It is retail so there are issues like payroll cuts and lack of staff, part timers that don't really care, tight deadlines for regroups and other directives. 

Not much room for time off during the holiday season and summer time due to back to school traffic. Small volume stores are skeletal at best and customer service suffers. Always being pressured to push the rewards card and credit card of our parent company instead of making strong connections through sport and activity. 

It used to be a great company you could go through the tough times with, now not so much. Many managers get where they are because of activites involving head office managers and alot of apple polishing and favouritism. Many people with experience and enthusiasm aren't developed the right way. Company doesn't do enough to recognize the workload and jobs we do and in turn compensate and treat us the right way.

The job was fun, and i learnt a lot, the culture was great, however the in office politics were BRUTAL. Management is so high and away that they don't hear the small but important everyday issues until its a massive problem and red flagged on their desk. They seem to always question the way forward without any kind of concrete plan. And after getting the hopes up of the people that work there they change the plan without informing anyone below management. Decisions are made to put people in charge based on who they are, and not if they can do the job. Some managers who have little to no experience in their unit don't listen to or take the time to understand the people they manage until its too late and problems arise. They Push the company as a glorious place to work, but don't compensate at market rates. Theres a feeling of "You work for FGL, thats good enough and a benefit itself, so we shouldn't have to pay you what other smaller companies would".  Very low annual wage increases despite positive company or employee performance, management will brag about "double digit comps", but none of that is kicked back to compensation that pays the bills.

This job at the very least tided me over through the worst of the recession but that's about where the good part of my review ends.

IT leadership is terrible/non-existant on a good day.  Its so bad that if the business asks for something IT just does it, regardless of the cost or already having solutions to fill those needs.  they say jump, IT says how high, all cause some VP somewhere wants some report done in some specific application instead of using the existing crystal reports or BI.

The entire system is so fragmented.  There's like 9 or 10 different monitoring frameworks in use... again, because IT is incapable of telling the business to use the already existing tools.

There is NO redundancy, period.  One HVAC failure will bring down the datacenter (and did, multiple times)  But the business is unwilling to pay to have things done right, and unwilling to give IT any power to tell them how things should be done.

If you're in any kind of support role you will be called out, literally every night cause everything is a P2, cause the business said so.

Job advancement is next to non-existent.

Wages are super low unless you're a manager.

I haven't been able to take a vacation in 2 years.

Don't do it.

When I started with the company it was a close and collaborative environment almost family like. It was always fast-paced, fun and youthful. It always strives to be on the cutting edge of Store design, Marketing, along with Sports Clothing and Equipment sales. Timing and deadlines are critical. Keeping up to date with trends and quarterly sales is an important part of their business. I did find that some people in management need to take more time in getting to know and understand their staff. The enjoyable part of the job was creating new and innovative designs for the stores and also with the people that worked along side you in the various departments.

Unless you're junior position, salary increases will be impossible or negligible. No matter how much praise you receive from your directors, your salary says otherwise.

Most or all of their management look at numbers rather than people. They consistently go over budget with skill-less vendors  able to pull off months of project delays. Yet they still stick to same job selling model who can say yes. Real skill isn't required.

It's no wonder when several vp's have quit when million dollar projects have failed and they've blamed the stupidity of the company. All you see are people with overbooked calendars yet have 0 deliverables working from home everyday.

Great for a year of discounts, terrible life commitment.

To complete shipping orders and loading of material onto truck for the day.

I learnt to prioritize my task and meet the required deadline on time.

Overall management was good in terms of making sure that I was eqipped to do my job on a daily basis by providing me the knowledge and guidance when needed.

4- Co - Workers

My co-workers were easy to get along with and always helpful when I seek their assistance.

5. Hardest part of the day.

The hardest part of the day can sometime be the ability to reach a deadline on time.

6. The most enjoyable part of the day.

This most enjoyable part of the day was completing my task with a sense of accomplishment.

The first 2 years were wonderful.  Than there was a restructure in management and district management and things took a turn.  There were ups, but more downs.  There was inconsistencies in visits and poor communication.   No training to better yourself or move up in the company.  After 10 more years of working there it took an even worse turn.  Again a switch in management ( keep in mind I was there for 13 years and had 7 different managers)  This manager would but the reason I left this company.   This manager wouldn't train,  had poor communication skills and lacked general care for thier staff.   The last straw for me was a walk through of my section which turned into berating me on the salesfloor infront of other associations and customers.  Noone deserves to be treated so poorly. 

If you want good conditions, a great salary, flexibility, great benefit, inclusion, fun at work and amazing colleagues and bosses…do not work at FGL !
I have never seen a place like this before. No inclusion at all, each department is not treated egally. Some people get bonuses and the end of the year, but not everyone and for no reason! Everything is kept secret and if you ask question they won’t answer. You want a great work-life balance? Forget it! 
You want to feel like you have a purpose and what you do matters? Don’t work there.
Everyone is selfish and they want to work the bare minimum, they will ask other people to do it. Management is on their tiptoes and it is never their fault. 
Worst corporate company I have seen. 
Although the office looks nice.

In my particular area, management expects lofty results while working their team very hard.  That would be fine if compensation and/or advancement opportunities would cover the stress and exhaustion, but this company seriously plays favourites when it comes to pay and advancement, and raises are almost always well under the cost of living... year after year. (If you get one at all).

You'd think, by the way this company is so stingy, that they were in dire risk of going bankrupt.  But no... it's currently one of Canada's most profitable retail operations.
