The workers there are friendly if you're on the morning crew. The managers are some of the best I've ever experienced. You start at $12/hour, and a 25 cent raise hits every 6 months. You will either be placed in Picking, Sortation, Shipping or Receiving. Picking you work at a computer scanning boxes, taking out parts, packaging them, and then readjusting numbers. The parts are sent down a large convey system which eventually gets down to sortation line. Which is extremely buggy, and sometimes eats the boxes, or gets jammed. As a sortation worker; you have to pick up said boxes and place them in large totes, scanning them and then the totes. Occasionally, you will have to unjam boxes, or tape boxes back together if they got eaten. Most of the parts are metal and will not break, but some products are fragile, and have to be placed in special locations. As a shipper you will most likely be operating a forklift. You will be unloading trucks, making sure sortation has all the skids they need, and scanning skids to locations. As a receiving employee you take boxes from skids, scan them into the system(need to learn software), and put them down the convey to go into the system for pickers to use. This part of the job is still not refined, and needs a very careful attention to details. If you generally do not care about your work ethic, please don't apply for a receiver position you will only make their job worse.
Everything "should" be scanned to a location, that's the bonus of this job. But occasionally, if you're lead of receiving you will have to hunt down a box that was either mislabeled, incorrectly scanned, or generally put in the wrong place by someone not paying attention. In my time with Fastenal there was no greater pain than to watch the lead of receiving hunting down boxes that should have just been scanned correctly and put in their proper place.
The lunch room looks awesome. There are lockers if you need them. 2 fridges. Large bathrooms, and separate one with a shower that locks.

Fastenal obsesses over growth and sales more than any other aspect of their business. Gifted salespeople can earn very high commissions and advance quickly. Be warned the company will change its commission structure unilaterally if employees earn too much, or if they want to push a new metric (for example lowering on-hand inventory).

Unfortunately the company fails to support sales talent with ops. Trucking networks are unreliable, distribution centers are understocked and branches are strangled by space, inventory and staffing constraints. Hub workers, drivers and other ops employees are badly underpaid so turnover is endless while morale and service levels suffer. Customers' orders frequently arrive late, damaged or picked incorrectly. 

Support for vending equipment and other technology is poor. Relations with clients usually break down because the company can't follow through on the post-sale. This is not an employer for ethnical professionals who value a long-term relationship with their accounts. 

These problems are an ongoing state of affairs resulting from years of corporate policy squeezing profits from today at the expense of the company's long-term wellbeing. Fastenal views employee labor as an expense to be controlled rather than an investment to be maximized. Make the mistake of caring too much and you'll end up working crazy hours with little or no corporate support meeting basic obligations to account clients who could be taken from you and handed to another employee - or a better-run competitor - tomorrow.

Worked for Fastenal for a little over a year.

At first the work was fine. Fast paced, great people to work with. They did have high expectations but as a new employee you learn to love it and hope that working towards these goals will bring some benefit.

Well, trust me, when it comes to this company that's not the case. I was told going in there that as long as we managed to meet certain criteria we would always get a bonus every month. (Was told it worked out to about another dollar an hour. Take whatever you can get when they only pay you 10.50 an hour.) They never gave us that, never once. Even though I know for a fact we all did the work they asked of us.

After about two months I was trained on the forklifts, told I would get a raise for that to. Nope.

I mean, don't get me wrong here. If you want to meet some decent people, (besides the management who seem to have this "I'm better than you in every way" attitude) it's a pretty decent place. But if you're looking to advance at all in the company this place isn't for you. They have an incredibly high turnover rate for one, the management is disgusting as I said before, the pay is horrible compared to other warehouse jobs in the area, you wont get raises and if you do please tell me because I know people who have worked there for years and didn't get anything.

At least you can put it on your resume?

My advice, go work for McDonalds. It will look better on your Resume in the end anyways. If you are going to work at Fastenal though, ignore the goals because what they tell you and what actually happens are two COMPLETELY different things.

Being with Fastenal in Cambridge for a year... Stuck as part time as it's their entry position... Been promised multiple times a full-time position... Never does it appear. Without that you can't make commission, you don't get bonuses, there's no salary, only 30 hours a week, and no benefits... It's "OK" if you have another job I suppose, but if you're looking for any possible type of career it's no good. The job itself isn't too bad I guess. I make the same amount of money as the new/old warehouse workers... Which is infuriating and degrading to me as I have SO much responsibility/stress to deal with. Whereas the several warehouse workers that stock shelves, pick orders, and clean have no stress and minimal responsibility... Yet they get the same pay as me and sometimes even more hours than me if they have lots of receive/pick, etc. All in all, the people who do the interviews mislead the job itself and don't believe in promotions as "the company already pays you enough" to begin with... In their words, not mine. So in order to get a promotion, you need to obtain fulltime which is next to impossible. I've seen many people come and go in my time there as well as heard stories from the past. Quite the turnover rate.

Fastenal as a company are good and the people I have met are excellent. Good people, job and good challenges. The pay could be a lot better than it is though. 

I have learnt a lot here from bottom to up and would recommend that to anyone. They teach you well and you do have make the most of your skill set of being hardworking, ambitious and also being a solution provider. Like any other job, there are some mundane tasks. The supply chain is also good, 95% of the time, product does come on time. But that 5% can be like Murphys Law, however this can be eradicated if you know how to work the channels to provide solutions. The people are great and definitely make the culture/environment. 

The only gripe with the company is that the pay doesn't reflect the stress in any role. The PT roles I feel the pay is decent. The Full-time roles, not so much, although it's higher on the commission side in terms of bonuses, it also can lead to renumaration not being consistent, which of course is dependent on growth and how stable the branch is. There will be good/bad days.

If the base was higher with a fairly decent commission % this would be an amazing job. 

Not a great company to work for if you are in Canada, especially in a big city like Calgary. Trucking routes are big in the states which lead to long lead times for us in Canada. It is also very difficult to be competitive with pricing.

They preach all the potential earnings you could make in your commission check. However, it is near impossible to do this because you need a high margin and new business to do so. Instead you will most likely be faced with getting your commission check cut in half due to low margins to win business and make the company money. 
- I know, it doesn't make sense. 

Two weeks vacation, which is lower than average. Can't take it all together either or your customers will suffer. No coffee breaks, very low base salary, very high chance a low commission check, mediocre benefits.

You'll get suckered into the blue pride, eventually you'll realized that your just a number.  If your young and need a job than this company will be a great start.  If your expecting more, good luck to you!  Before getting hired, I've been to this site, so I can get an idea what I'm getting myself into.  I saw the negative reviews, but I had faith that things will change.  I should of listen to the reviews provided by former Fastenal members.  I'll confirm that most of the negative reviews is true.  Insane amount of expectations for low pay, 50+ hours of work, promise change to keep you going, no pay increase no matter how many times you hit goal, highest turn over, horrible higher management.  I feel sorry for the current employees that can't leave, still clinging on for hopes of change or pay increase!  I've watched countless good employees quit, everyone: from part timers, sales, account specialist, general managers, and even district managers leaving. Take it or leave advice, it's no longer my problem. Good luck to you!

When I first started I got put into a mess of a store. A new young GM was coming in, old GM out, and longest time running employee passed away. I got pushed to perform tasks and duties not covered by my job title. I was over worked and under paid without benefits. Working 40hours a week with only PT wage, no benefits and no protection. I was then promoted to FT but it’s been 6months and no sight of benefits. Got a $1 raise since then, but typically working long, dragging hours, without getting paid for overtime because of the cheapness of the company. They expect us to reach for the stars but they tie our hands behind our back. With a PT support staff now that has quit, and another FT salesperson quitting, they cut back the hours on everyone else which adds more pressure and stress on everyone. 

They paint your future to be very dark, hence the high turnover. If they stop overworking and severely underpaying their employees, then they might have a reason to stay.

Just starting out in B2B Sales? Then use this company for your personal benefit short term. The initial training that you will receive is great from trained educators. I would recommend the training for anyone as the instructors live their values. Now for the dark side of the equation. They training is inconsistent with the feet on the ground, meaning management. I am not referring to branch management, as they are only glorified sales people with extra duties to perform. I am referring to management above that level. Looked upon to be proficient communicator the fail hard and lead by this poor example. Much more of a high-school environment than a professional organization. Once you have cut your teeth and trained a bit then pursue another company. Smoke and mirror promises are going to come your way but pay them no mind as upper management are on strict budget and cant afford the promises they offer. Its the Walmart of Industrial Supply my friends.

My time spent at Fastenal was honestly great the first year. But due to changes in management that occurred somewhat recently and the way things were being run, it rapidly became a bad place to stay employed at. From the department suddenly becoming overworked, and encountering days with absurd overtime one of the days being a morning shift that went from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (when we are scheduled to end at 2:00 pm). I understand that overtime is expected at Fastenal, but it came to the point where afternoon shifts that started at 4:00 pm started going until 12:00 am to the occasional near 1:00 am, when before they would only go until 10:30 pm - 11:00pm. I believe that this job once was different from the common warehouse job and where people would leave in a good mood. But due to the changes, the work environment had declined and people were leaving a lot more frequently. I wouldn't recommend this job to anyone other than those who only care about the pay.
