When I injured my back I needed a list of Job Duties from my company so my doctor could file my disability  claim.  They would not give me a list of Job Duties.

I had to wear a respirator that did not fit or I would be fired and they made us wear summer rubber impact gloves in -30 -40 weather because they were to cheap to buy winter gloves or other adequate  PPE.  Most new hires never pass their 90 day evaluation because they quite.  The wages are not high, they are low.  They don't care about you.  Everything is micromanaged. To the point that you have to wait all day to get supplies and then management doesn't understand why you weren't able to get production that day.  

I came from a company that was purchased by Shawcor.  All of us who came over had our pays stubs opened up and shown to other employees and wages compared.  The other manager stopped handing out pays stubs shortly after that because there were complains of people not getting paid all their hours.  HR doesn't care. They lied to me over the phone about refusing to give a list of job duties and denied it and then I sent an email with the phone recording to her  to prove she wss a liar.  She/HR didn't care.  The benefits are employer paid so I am sure they don't want an increase in insurance rates.

I would sooner work at fast food then work for these clowns again.  Also there is no such thing as inventory management here.  Just mix 100,000s of pipes with other ones of different sizes and uses!  I never witnessed any integrity here what so ever.

You deal with heavy pipe repetitive tasks and bad ergonomics.  Sometimes you have to wait all day for management to approve you to buy supplies to get your work done.

This is my perception and experience at the company and I would never recommend it to anyone!

Solid core of people for the most part, but there are a few weak links.  A couple of 'old school' thinkers who openly laugh about the good old days of "Termination Tuesday" where they would fire someone because it was Tuesday.  Of course they don't actually do that, but the fact that a supervisor is openly discussing this during toolbox meetings is a huge morale killer.  Those same supervisors DO purposely make up pointless jobs, just to make life difficult for new hires.  They are close with upper management which gives them the protection to be difficult for kicks.   I am saying this as an observer, and not someone affected by this.  I worked in a different department, that I couldn't say a bad thing about.  Wonderful people.  Thoughtful, fun, and caring.  
Upper management is very knowledgeable, and I respect that.  But near impossible to approach.  Ask them a question, and chances are you will get a sarcastic and vague response.  They know the business...just not how to deal with people. (also the same manager who are close to the 'old school' supervisors)


Originally obtained the interview through an Outsourcing Employment Company, and fromt he day I started, until my last they maintained wonderful Safety Policies, hands down taught me on how a company should properly put Production Procedures in place and how they need to be created.

Continental Shifts were the only dilemma most face. I never minded it myself, but when Overtime was available and taken it began to take a hard toll on your body.

The training system, and employment advancement was absolutely amazing and was challenging which kept me interested.

The Supervisors were all very thorough and tried their hardest to make it work for their teams.

Unfortunately the OIL issues occurring in the world at that time presently cause for myself and another 150 persons to be laid off on the same day, I miss that place.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I enjoyed working at Shawflex. Yes, there were a lot of changes with the move but overall the people were excellent and I learned a lot in my role. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nothing too stressful about the company, the move did lead to changes but as a shift supervisor, stress is part of the job while you ensure production is met. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment and culture was great. Production is busy but the machine operators work well together and willing to help when needed. A lot of knowledge on the floor. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day for me involved:
Ensuring shop orders are correctly distributed to the work centres, ensuring safety is met on the floor, concessions sent, finished goods are shipped on time.

You will be tasked with performing the work load of several employees. Coming to work early to gain an advantage on the workload will lead to being taken for granted, and management will then use that time to schedule more work. They do not hire adequate personnel to perform work safely, to the point of delaying updating SOP's as that would force them to hire more staff to follow those updates. They do not offer a competitive wage to attract competency when they do try to hire. They will lower journeyman rates at review time to skirt legislated pay raises. They attempt to have employees use personal time to perform required maintenance on machinery, refusing to allocate business hours to safety sensitive maintenance.

A typical   day  at work , first thing  crossover meeting in order to know  what happen in the previous shift and  what I  should expect  during my  shift. After that I analyse the  production floor , what  I need  to do or organise according to their priority .Ex; have the machines  loaded, control pipe engineer specification , control machines temperatures, complete administrative task after each reel production . Make sure everyone and my self are working safely .  
Each day learn  something new , about procedures , machines, software ... The workplace culture  is great  we focus safety , quality and technology  .The workplace  is good there no hard part , I enjoy every minute of it . I would like  to have the opportunity to work in my field or something related .

As long as you can handle unrelenting change and uncertainty, this is a wonderful place to work. Org changes done more regularly than projects can be completed creating a general sense of frustration shared among most staff not at executive level. Almost everyone is friendly and make work a pretty good place to spend your day. The culture with regard to work-life balance is pretty laid back, most managers are very understanding. There is some disconnect between management and the rest of the working population which comes out as lack of communication. The hardest part of working at Shawcor is constantly reapplying to your own job to a new manager; career progress is stunted every time. The best is the people there to spend 40+ hours a week with.

A typical workday is looking at orders and doing as much as you can to complete it on the ship date. I learned how to quickly make decisions and fix machines on my own as the mechanics were understaffed. Management was disorganized and many orders were rushed the last second leaving the worker to blame, not the management, they are also afraid to make decisions which may better the work environment and the company. The hardest part of the job was being taken seriously because you were there to work and they don't appoint you to a steady position so you come into work with no idea what station you work at. The most enjoyable part of the job was the employees.

It was a contract to fill in as the Assistant to the Secretary of the Board of Directors (lawyer) and to take care of the International Board whenever there was a board meeting in Toronto.

Very busy around BOD time.  Shaw Industries had been in business for years, now expanded into Shaw Media and still growing.  

Hardest was figuring out a lot by myself, because my two mentors were on sick leave, and the young people who worked there had no clue.  So I figured everything out myself.

I loved working in a venerable old building with a history of successful businesses over the years and is still expanding.

With Shawcor their is a lot of opportunity for advancement.  I found the people I worked with to be the main reason for going to work as the job is quite unfulfilling.

Day to day work changed all the time at customer requests.  Employees were often told what they were doing during the day, just to be thrown in 3 more directions within an hour. 

I recommend this company to anyone looking for advancement and an opportunity to climb the corporate ladder, but if you are someone looking for structure, organization and leadership....Look elsewhere.
