Dear Human Resources Representative,
Please accept my resume in competition for the position mentioned.
Over the past 15+ years I have worked all over the country in many high level positions, graduating
from one management level to another. I have personally and professionally developed many
individuals to become successes in their craft, trade or management. I believe in people and that
everyone has something to offer, I have always enhanced strengths and built on weaknesses to
make well rounded professionals.
One of the most valuable things I have learned over the years is keep educating one self, whether
it reading an article, joining peer societies or taking formal classes, I have also found that it can be
infectious once someone takes the lead and promotes continuous learning to everyone. My
personality allows others to buy into me and I have always treated everyone fairly.
I have many strengths however the most valuable one I have in conjunction to my education and
experience is adaptability. Nothing seems to take be by surprise anymore as I have very strong
problem solving skills to work through any situation that is given to me.
I have been a successful Naval Architect in the ship building industry and I understand the
pressures that operations feel as I participated with them on completing many projects with very
strict schedules and budgets. What I was able to offer each of the employers I worked for were
many cost / time saving techniques using principles such as streamlining, lean management and
quality to enhance product, schedule and always meet the budgetary requirements.
I am a great manager of people as my soft management skills are just as strong as my hard
management skills. I realize that the whole person is coming to work and that their personal lives
are affecting their professional jobs just as much as a project schedule or budget would. I have
helped many people regain focus and balance their home and work lives.
Many organizational employees, either direct reports or not, always seem to know who I am
regardless of the size of the company as being one of exceptional organizational skills and an
added value to their company. I am very impressed with the relationships that I still have today
with many of the workers that I have encountered in the past.
You will find me very professional, light hearted and easy to get along with however I am also
very thorough in my thoughts and extremely meticulous with my reports. My leadership style
allows for the expression of the teams thoughts and ideas while not being afraid to make a decision
regarding the direction of the company.
My family and I are strong believers in Fort McMurray and we want to stay here for the rest of our
careers however I would like to become a part of the team that is developing the skills that are
needed in the region.

Started at FMGOC with no mining or trucking experience. Training takes place over 2-3 weeks and is very easy to grasp for most people. The pay is below industry standard and they are difficult about giving out raises that should be given at set periods (3months, 6months, 1 year). 
Leadership is a mixed bag. They progress from Haul Truck Operators, and while experienced, I wouldn’t say they were the best in their field. While helpful they can sometimes be dismissive. I believe most problems come from main manager for FMGOC at Syncrude, he is focused on productivity above all else and seems to be quite prone to favouritism, ironically to operators who seem stunted. 

The benefits at the company are okay but overall it can feel like a dead end job as it is very difficult to get hired on as a full time employee of Syncrude, which is often most people’s goal. Positions are very limited and hiring almost never happens. With the introduction of autonomous trucks, I think it will be next to impossible to score a Syncrude job after this last hire as Syncrude is planning major reductions in contractor workforce come 2026. 
Overall I think FMGOC is a stepping stone into the industry, but almost any other company would be preferred as it’s not run very well at any level. Essentially they will use you to make money from the prime contractor, while giving very little of that money back to you. 

I worked with fort McKay at suncor on a snow removal contract as a labourer/operator (was operating front end loaders and skid steers about 80% of the time unless the equipment was broken down). I loved working with this company. Met some great lifetime friends and had a blast. I didn’t have issues with anyone I worked with aside from the one or two bad apples who I didn’t get along with, but that can’t be always blamed on the company. 

It was a fun workplace with lots of room for advancement. I also worked in the mine ops department and the rentals department and was offered a full time job in two different departments, but unfortunately it wasn’t in the cards for me at the time. However I had a very hard time saying no as it was an excellent, secure job with some good people and good opportunities. 

The only cons I had with this company was some of the middle management and a certain foreman were a bit shady and not very easy to get along with at times, but for how often you had to deal with these people it was very manageable. Also for labourers a lot of time is spent outside in the cold, however as I moved quickly into an operator position this wasn’t an issue for very long. 

I was an operator employed by FMGOC for 6 years. I was brand new to the industry before I had started and by the time I hit year 4 I was trained and signed off on all sizes of cat haul trucks, komatsu trucks, and Leibherr haul trucks.  I realized I was getting bored of just doing the same thing so I approached my leaders and they switched me to a different role where I learned to operate dozers and loaders. I think Fort McKay group will always have an opportunity for you to grow and learn but you do need to communicate and maintain a good relationship with your superiors. You also need to show up, work safely, and be a team player. Most notably after 6 years I can say with absolute certainty that you will never feel like you can’t talk to your leaders, they encourage you to communicate with them. Now for the most important advice, if you’re hired to run haul truck as an embedded operator- do not fall for the “if you do a good job, suncor/Syncrude will hire you on” instead just do your job, show up for your shifts, sometimes you get lucky and get offered a job but 9 times out of 10 you will not and that’s completely okay, because once you reach top rate and utilize available overtime and manage your finances you can actually live comfortably.

It was fun and challenging.I have learnt so many things like safety,how important it is in a work place and how valuable an employee is to the company and that hard work pays.Management are always willing to motivate workers into being better valuable individuals.I had such good experience with my co-workers,everyday was different,we made our job more interesting and a home to look forward to going to,we were like family,but just like in each and every family,there would be misunderstandings and we always found a way to work things through and tolerated each other.The hardest part was when we got switched over and other people getting better opportunity and i did not and change was the most challenging part,especialy when it did not favour me and finally getting laid off first.The most enjoyable part was the Tool box meeting when we talk about what we were gonna do that day!Safety rules and everyone participating and sharing about their challenges on the day,and ofcourse the pay was good and fruitful,wish I could have stayed 

It was a great experience to start a mining career with the company as they hire people with less than to no experience or related background to work as a Haul Truck Operator.  Onboarding is pretty straightforward and you will have a process and procedures where you will be paired up with an experienced operator to coach and mentor you the basic skills, handling situations, 2way radio usage as well as the other important things and aspects to learn to operate a haul truck (Cat797F and B) and how to be reliable and safe operator. It was such a short term for me to work there (Fort Mcmurray) as the travel time, out of pocket accommodation and other costs associated with the job away from home ( somewhere in Alberta) ultimately leads to my resignation. I could’ve stayed and probably worked the rest of my remaining time and retire from the company but those factors contributed to my early exit. Over all a great experience with the company as well as the people within. 

Paperwork is time consuming, you must do a 'risk assessment' form a Minimum of 6 times a day, find a risk even if you have to invent one, find the time. 

You must show up at 7:30 am for a "Tool Talk" even if your driving shift is 9am-5pm, they don't like paying OT either I was told.

You Must wear long sleeve shirts/long pants/tall heavy boots even on the hottest of days. As a Driver outside that is not needed but they force the same Rules on you that a oilfield worker must do, whether it makes sense or not.

You must wear hard hat/goggles while inside even if they are not really needed. You must don them outside, take off your warm toque and put on your frozen hard hat before you enter, again for no good reason.

Their 5 tons have lift gates, but you're not supposed to use them even if it makes your job easier. They will fire you if you want to. I should have said nothing and just used it without telling them.

I start my day off at work by doing our toolbox talk safety is number one. After we are finished the toolbox talk in the morning we go off with the people we are teamed up with for the day and start our route for the day. Which is picking up the used coveralls and after doing so we scanned them and then they get picked up by the company that cleans them ; then they drop off the clean coveralls. After the clean ones are dropped off our team begins sorting them into their sizes  and then we distribute them through out the site. what i have learned from this job is how to problem solve and how to get the job done on a tight schedule. the thing I enjoy most about working were i am at now is my co-workers i love to get to know people and learning how to work with others. the hardest part about my job would be the repetitive movement its constant bending  and twisting.

-Shift starts @ 6:00 am with toolbox safety meetings  then go into    the field.
- Walk around safety pre-checks on equipment exterior/interior, Paperwork (FLRA's, & equipment log-in hours/maintenance book), conduct series of brake tests, systems/control tests (steering,lights, horn etc..).
-Await further instruction.
-Awesome teamwork with clear instructions.
-Indecisive project planning creates tough down time with lack of productivity.
-Gratification is rewarding after project is complete.
Many talented Operator employed including myself with no sense of job security or advancement opportunities.

Not one of the better places in the industry. You need to be part of a cleuqe or you won’t survive. Management from top to bottom plays favourites and overlooks serious issues depending on who you are or who your friends with. Not the kinda place you can bring up serious issues for fear of being run off the site. Supervisors will lie to your face and not even do a good job at it. Even be proud of it because they know they can get a way with it  They will find ways to get rid of you for caring and taking the job seriously if your not part of the special circle. Safety is often overlooked at the cost of friends and who you know
