Fossil Landscape Construction

I worked at Fossil Landscape Construction for one year as a construction and maintenance worker. If you are looking for a position on the maintenance team. I would highly recommend working for this department. It's a great work environment with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. They have a fantastic maintenance manager who is on-top of her game.

If you are starting out as a construction worker at Fossil I would be prepared too work hard and stay in shape for the job. Fossil is considered a large outfit for a landscaping company and require alot of physical labour to complete there projects. You should also be prepared too work in a construction environment and challenging conditions. Especially during the winter months.

You will learn the fundamentals of landscape installation or learn more about the trade if you have experience. Fossil has a very talented trades crew. They have carpenters, stone masons, irrigation technicians and site leaders. You can learn alot from these trades people but you have too be timely and show initiative. I would recommend voicing your requests or ambitions with your site leader and the human resource manager. You will also learn or gain experience in operating skid steer, mini excavator and other equipment used for landscape construction.

Fossil is a very structured and organized company. I found there management team too be friendly and highly professional. They expect alot from there employees but also show a tremendous amount of support out in the field. It is not uncommon for management too check in with coffee, snacks and other items for the crew.

Although Fossil was not the right fit for me. I would highly recommend applying with the company. If you want too learn, work or accelerate your skills with the best the industry this is the place too be! 


Worked in construction for few years.    

It's okay. You lay down tiles, shovel gravel, soil and plant plants.   

There's not a lot of breaks. You might have to work through your lunch if the crew leader thinks you don't deserve one.  

You're working outside most of the time. Even when it's raining, snowing or sizzling hot. It gets really rough and you don't get time to have water or warm up. So bring hot coffee or tea cause the management won't help you.   

It's difficult dealing with management. I wanted to work myself up to a crew leader buy I was told I would never be one. I tried my hardest but it didn't take long to realize I was set up to fail.   

Work is slow. Most of the time you're just digging holes and refilling them. You don't learn much from that and you just feel stupid doing it.  

There are company events that are fun. But they're few and far between. 


Day to day operations are pretty straightforward. Weeding, pressure washing, mowing, hedge sheering and tree pruning if you get lucky.  

On site work is okay. 
Very slow pace so there's a lot of time to learn new things. Problem is you have to "look busy" which can be a challenge having both the client and super starring at you constantly.  

Breaks are few and short. 10-15 minute (depends who you work with) coffee break at 10am and then an unpaid 30 min meal break. 

This would be a pretty nice job but low pay and management really drag everything down.  
Lots of yelling, false accusations and gaslighting. Feedback is encouraged but not taken seriously. 

Depending on the crew leader the day can get very chaotic quickly which leads to lots of stress when needed to finish the work on time.  

Very frustrating place. 

Having worked with other companies over the years, you find out what you’re not willing to compromise on and in the landscape industry that can look like a lot of things, I’ll give you mine. Integrity, hard work, conscientious peers and supervisors, uncompromising construction ethics and fun. Without a doubt I have come to appreciate that all these qualities can be found at Fossil. The character built into Fossil’s structure, project tier/clientele, awards and slogan all speak for themselves - You don’t get to work on the most spectacular projects in Vancouver by being second rate in any of the above. If you value these qualities I’d say join the team and be ready to learn. 

The years have flown by since I started at Fossil and it is great to see the team and myself making progress project after project and developing craft and leadership in high-end landscaping. 
I started at Fossil as landscape laborer and tasks were very diverse and learned a lot of new skills. My roll has changed and specialized over the course and now getting sponsored for apprenticeship. 
At Fossil you will do things you may have never done before and get to develop skills and find your talents. You never stand alone with anything as "team" is the common mindset and everyone gets treated with respect, and soon it will be picked up if someone doesn't! There is always room for a joke and a laugh too. 
The regular hours and pay are great for worklife balance. 

For a person in there first 5 years of construction, looking for a place where you will be taught skills quickly and be able to move up as quickly as you can handle this is the place...the expierence you get here is second to none. By there own admission they exceed industry standards in just about about every way other than wage..which the claim meet.
Great place for beginners, prob the best

It's awesome to be part of a team that builds some of the best landscapes not only in Vancouver,  but in the country!  The properties we work on are honestly unbelievable. The work is challenging as we often build features that have never done before and quality has to be the best but the hardwork and attention to detail is absolutely worth it. I'm proud of the work I do at Fossil. My friends and family can't believe the projects I work on.  It's a great company and I get recognized for my efforts. 
The people I work with are fun to be around and the best in the industry. 

As a long term member of Fossil's team I have been fortunate to grow with the company and gain vast experience in high end landscape construction practices. There is opportunity to work on diverse projects with the best materials, tools and equipment. The team is Hardworking and Conscientious. Company sponsored events are always a great way to catch up with other team members in a great atmosphere. If you're looking to join the best Landscape Construction company in BC - look no further!

Fossil has been a very warm and welcoming company to work for since day one. I have been guided and encouraged to learn many different skills that allow me to contribute to the best of my ability. There is a great sense of Team cohesion and a willingness to work towards a common goal, all while enjoying the work along the way. 
If you enjoy challenging yourself and working outdoors no matter the season then Fossil is a place I can't recommend enough.   

Working at Fossil is about as rewarding as it gets in the Landscape industry. The projects we work on are truly one of a kind! Great group of people with plenty of opportunities for advancement and career growth. It can definitely be hard work, but the results of the hard work are pretty amazing and rewarding. 

Having worked at a few other companies over the years it's safe to say that Fossil is the most professional and structured group I've come across. I recommend Fossil to anyone looking to build a long-lasting career in the landscape field.
