Please, for your own mental health and sanity, do not apply to work for this company. It seems like it would be a good job because it is a "fun" colorful candy store (...well, used to be) but the utter mismanagement, condescending and toxic ownership, and downright exploitative nature of their business model leaves much to be desired, even as a basic retail job. The policies and guidelines are constantly changing from one week to the next but you will be written up if you don't follow them perfectly. They say they want creativity but will slap away any new idea that isn't their own. They have no problem firing anybody they don't like, does not matter if its personal, or how long you have worked for them. Once you've done something wrong, there is no coming back. They will start to find ridiculous reasons to write you up, just for pretext to fire you. 
It just isn't worth it for minimum wage. You will be left over worked, under paid and under appreciated. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
You get to discover and try lots of interesting candies and drinks from all over the world.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The management structure is basically nonexistent and the owners completely disregard most requests from employees.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's relatively toxic. I've heard stories about other stores allowing supervisors to date associates, there's drama amongst employees, management only cares about profit and not about the wellbeing of their employees.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It's usually okay, though the location isn't very good so there's a lot of stress due to theft and substance use in the areas around the store.

They pay very little for absurd expectations.
Management is incredibly toxic and I witnessed more favouritism here than I ever have before. 

They have no problem firing people over virtually nothing. They promote their favourites even if they’re lazy and break the rules; which only seem to apply to certain people.

The environment is incredibly toxic. They will schedule you outside of your availability. If you rely on busing, they do not care. 

Employees and managers are both incredibly toxic, lots of smack talking right to your face. The cleanliness is non-existent. I was the only one who tried to clean properly. 


Save your mental health and do not work here. 

A typical day at work is fixing problems Owners/Management caused.

Management themselves are decent but the owner forces them into poor situations.

Workplace culture is if you're unhappy, or unable to work under poor conditions and management, LEAVE. The turn over at this company is INSANE. People don't last 3 months here. Owner and management won't fix core issues in themselves.

Hardest part of the job is being thrown under the bus every shift.

Most enjoyable part is making someone's day. Customers are generally pretty great for retail standards.

Your life at Freak Lunchbox (St. John's) starts out amazing, but then will turn into a nightmare. This is by no fault of the employees.

Management is awful, and it's sad because they used to be great. They are unfair, harsh, and incredibly biased. The illusion of diversity and acceptance brings people in only to slap them across the face when they're hired. You will be fired for small mistakes, you will be fired because you speak up, and you will be fired because you are not a favourite. 

I would not recommend working here at all. It is demoralizing.

Probably better than your average retail job - coworkers are nice, lower management is awesome and the customers are only terrible around the christmas rush.  Upper management is a mess, though, and are constantly introducing new and self-contradicting rules.  Working extra hard won't get you anything except stress and unpaid labour.  You get a "raise" of a couple cents every year.  A perfectly good job if you just want to show up, do your hours, and go home.  But don't expect to get much more out of it.

Extreme favouritism issue. Management will give full time hours to employees they personally like, while leaving people with more seniority at 10 hour weeks for a month before firing them over minor easily remedied issues. This happens repeatedly.

If management has an issue with you, YOU WILL NOT BE TOLD WHY. You will not be made aware there are issues until termination. They do not provide opportunities to improve. 


Managers plays favourites. Store cleanliness is disgusting no one cares. They’ll promote lazy workers because they’re a favourite. Honestly one of the best decisions was to leave. Manager is very hard to get along with and would insult me. Extremely hostile working environment with terrible hours. They’ll cut your hours with no notice for no reason seemingly. Don’t work here if you can avoid it! 

One month you're scheduled fifty hours and they're begging for you on the floor, the next you are barely making rent. This is a job for kids who want spending money and don't take it seriously. Bad ownership, bad management, the only people in the company who know how to run the business they refuse to promote. A real tragedy, the team when I was working there were absolutely lovely. 

Started with the new store opening in Newfoundland.  Pace is intense, the manager is helpful and works on the floor with us.  A lot of lifting and moving product.  Hardest part is the volume, shipments everyday and nowhere to put them.  Store is very small.  Customers are generally very happy (its candy!).
