GUELPH MERCURY

This job provided me with my first idea of what a job should be like. After I came home from school, I would spend ten to twenty minutes delivering papers. This helped me connect with, and build relationships, with my neighbors. I got to experience what it felt like to be part of a community, which was especially liberating at such a young age. When I was hired, the company's workers were so open and friendly, I felt encouraged to excel at my job and my nervous thoughts I had about it simply vanished. The hardest part of this job for me was getting up so early on a Saturday when all I wanted to do was sleep in, however, my determination never made this a problem. This job made me feel accomplished and seeing my neighbors smile at me whenever I delivered their paper was the best part of my day.

Organizing paperwork in the beginning of the shift, for all truck, drivers, and carriers. 
Making following changes to paperwork if something changed on the day of.
Increasing math skills from counting instead of using the calculator, since we didn't have the time to do so.
Increase overall management skills, since most work was to reorganize paperwork, or product.
Co-workers were kind and helpful 
When there's too much work for two people, and had to stay in overtime or come in early to finish the work
Once all work was finish, break could be as long as the time it's done to the next work that comes.

I hated the fact that you had to deliver everyday but I loved that it got me out of the house. Delivery by 5 pm at the latest from Monday to Friday was great for me, it fit in with my everyday life and got, and kept me fit if anything. Saturdays is what killed me, having to be up by 6 am to get the papers put them together and then have 100 papers delivered by 9 am, horrible! Some people on the route were happy, fantastic people unlike a couple of stops that always made me cringe at the amount of disrespect I received from them. Overall not a bad job, depending on the customers.

I would be delivered the papers to my house from Guelph Mercury and I was in charge of grouping papers and flyers together getting them ready to be delivered. Would bike to the neighbourhood and deliver which took upwards of an hour. Was fun to do as a I got to go out on my bike doing it but was challenging in the winter months when it got cold and icy.

The Guelph Mercury was an amazing company when it came to being organized, unlike the Guelph Tribune where they make you put the papers together. The papers were small, but had to be done every weekday before 5:00 PM and every Saturday before 9:00 AM (which can suck if you don't like waking up early on the weekend).

Torstar ceased publication of the newspaper in Guelph in January 2016, less than 4 years after I left. For the most part, I loved working there and loved most of my fellow employees and clients. I thrived on growing my accounts through relationship building. Unfortunately, to corporate head office employees were just a number.

The Guelph Mercury as we all know has been a great company for over one hundred years and I am proud to say I was able to work for them in their final days. Management was amazing and well organized.

This was my first Job... I Ended up quiting because no matter what the weather was you are expected to deliver the papers. Sometimes the people who delivered the papers to me were late doing so, which made me late in delivering the papers to the people on my assigned route

Working at GUELPH MERCURY was good because the clients I deliverd the newspapers and magazines to were very kind to me. But during winter was hard because it was cold and I wasn't able to ride my bike but I still managed to get my clients newspapers to them on time.

Developing effective sales proposals and presentations for clients to increase sales and to create lasting business relationships
