Management only cares about other management, and head office ONLY supports Store Managers or ASM roles. Keyholders are expected to perform with astronomical KPI's and high energy always, with absolutely no pay increase or perks/benefits. I loved my fellow associates and certain managers, but the expectations of me was too much for the hours I was given or the tools I had available. I had to cover shifts at other stores because they were well under staffed as people were quitting for the same reasons I did. I know many old employees that all feel the same and were either not given opportunities to improve, or were basically told they weren't good enough. I got tired of only being valued from my sales numbers that can often be tricky to control. The stores are given minimal hours for schedules each week, and are not given proper tools to clean or maintain the stores. Everything is on a budget for what reason? Not to mention the actual computer system is ancient and very difficult to maneuver, but they refuse to update it because it's "too expensive", yet they can spend 9 million to rename all EB stores to GameStop? Head offices are very cheap and refuse to support stores if it means costing them more money. I had to stay hours late one night because the entire store till went down, on and off the phone all night, and then came in early the next morning to reset the network, all without being paid as I was clocked out at the end of my actual shift, and I was never part of management, so it should not have been my stress. I was a part time associate with minimal support from others even though I would often reach out to my DM for assistance. I would have to train new associates and even interview some, again, with no pay increase or support. They made me train a new manager for a different store as a PT ASSOCIATE. Why was I training a new manager? I was told by 3 or 4 different people that I would be promoted to an ASM to help out my stores, and it was always broken promises. The expectations of this company were ridiculous and I was so disappointed to find this out the hard way. They'll cycle around your managers with no choice or prior word, and force you to adjust to new teams and management styles every little while.

Overall, very disappointing and poorly planned stores. Even the best of the best were treated poorly. I was warned of this when I started, and I am saddened to admit it's true.

The entry level of this position is a Game Adviser which is fairly easy. It is all about learning and getting your feet wet with company values and methods. If you say you are "bored" in this position, you're not doing everything you can to keep yourself busy. 

As a Keyholder/Manager, there is a lot more responsibility and your days seem to fly by because of how busy it can get. Number one responsibility is making quote. Everything revolves around the circle of life so not only do you need to keep an eye on your numbers, but your team members as well. If one person is getting left behind, the whole team is behind. Another important role is customer service and inventory. Customers should always feel like they are listened to and have the upmost respect and service. Doing counts and changing out the marketing posters was probably the most tedious part of the job. You need to have all marketing posters up and counts completed all while helping out customers. Even if that means there are only two employees scheduled for that day; It needs to be done no matter what by the end of the day.

On average, I would show up to work to find the manager had done nothing all day, except play in their phone.  This would mean I would often have to set marketing, or put out the price changes, or process shipping. This also meant there was no leadership, so things like the defective exchanges, that get shipped back weekly were not done, or the game trades were not processed. This overall lack of leadership led to complaints to the district manager, who would then make excuses and allow this store manager free rein to do whatever they liked. When we found that the manager was violating policy, and potentially stealing, it was swept under the rug. The company is also structured so loosely that there is no upper authority to make sure the district managers aren’t corrupt as well, so there is no accountability there.
This company may have been great at one time, and I myself loved the customer aspect but it is not a great place to work. 
Also of note, the hours are based on sales, so if the store as a whole is doing poorly, staff hours are cut, while management gets their prescribed 40 hours a week. 


I have worked at two different locations in two different provinces and I gotta say in general EB Games is a fun place to work if you get along with your coworkers and management. However if you are looking for a job that gives steady hours, room for advancement, and job security than this job is not for you. It is perfect for students but not people that require the job to be financially stable. The hours are very short and few. They are only required to give one three hour shift every pay period. So one three hour shift every two weeks. 
They look at sales stats more than job performance when giving hours. The lower your stats the fewer hours you get. These stats are based on how many warranties and edge cards you sell per week. You don't get commission or any kind of perk for selling these. As far as staff goes. Most of them are gamers so if you are also a gamer you at least have something you like to talk about with others. Very customer service oriented and a lot of up selling is required.

The individuals you work with in your store will more than likely be fantastic people and make your day to day more enjoyable just by being around. I can't say the same for upper management.

Implementing sales targets during a worldwide pandemic was a greedy and stupid decision. You can't force people to buy things when their income is uncertain during an unprecedented global crisis, no amount of "sales tactics" will change that.

This job also pays minimum wage, with next to no room for advancement or any meaningful wage growth. This is a job you either work out of high school and move on from, or get hostaged into staying at because it is next to impossible to find a permanent position elsewhere right now.

Open shop,inventory, customer service, cashiering, learn about games, closing.

I learned basic inventory management, legal limitations of game release info,Point of Sale System, cash out, customer service to really well informed customers.

Great management wanting to work with you but struggle to accommodate with hour cuts.

Culture was to have Fun and Get involved with the community to learn the latest up coming trends of games.

Hardest part is Dealing with Super Energetic People  with very limited patience for something that is hours away from release.

Most enjoyable part is the community of people that help keep mid night launches under control by distracting others in a fun way and playing along.

The individuals in the company are, without exception, terrific individuals. The atmosphere, as a 'nerd haven', is lighthearted and fun. There is an enormous amount of stress on assistant managers, store managers and above. Me leaving the company is due to said stress and an anxiety disorder. While this is not completely due to the company itself, one issue I had was relative short-sightedness in regards to the long term direction of the company, and watching stores close down, and colleagues lose their positions weighed heavily on me.
Taking all of this into consideration, I encourage high school seniors and post secondary students to apply, and if you are able to handle the pressures of a brick and mortar store in a world shifting towards digital, and online shopping, look into management, but be wary of the stress that the job brings.

I used to work at Gamestop along time ago. 
I applied on a whim because I needed a secondary income ( I am gamer so my money basically went back to the place).

The team I worked with were good people but the overall culture is not the best. Your forced to sell game guarantees even on new games which is totally unnecessary, but you kind of just grit your teeth and pick and choose who you sell it to.

Fortunately this was just my second job and I did it for fun and the benefits. 

As a company I would not want a career here but for someone starting out depending on the location and the staff it was fun. 

Classic case of a large company not being able to figure itself out - getting anything done takes forever because of how small each team is, so if you need information about a sale or shipment that you can't get from your store computer, prepare to wait a few days. They are also moving more and more work to the store level without adding extra manpower at the store level; if something gets disorderly or god forbid breaks, you have 0 time to fix the problem because you have to be dealing with customers constantly and you have multiple tasks that need to be done by the end of the day. Enjoyable job if you get a good team, but if you're looking to join, make sure you aim for a less busy location. Part-time staff also don't have to worry about nearly as much and the pay increase to full-time (management) is not enough.

Typical day no matter the position is receive stock put it out and then sell it talk to customers and build a repour with them before trying to push cards, warranties and other stats that make the customer just want to leave.

Upper management also doesn't give proper hours or staff to meet when demand days are higher and can negatively impact the store and staff to get less sales because of customers negative attitude towards the employees.
