Honestly, one of the best jobs I've have so far. Coworkers are very supportive, flexible schedule if you are a casual worker (I was), and the pay was great compared to other jobs I worked at. 

The workers are super nice, and you can tell they care about the clients (at least in the programs that I worked in). Supervisors provided a lot of support if there was something I wasn't comfortable doing or didn't know how to do.

I liked their scheduling system for casual employees, where we were given a schedule for the entire month. Management was super flexible with availability. I've had a couple of school semesters where I just couldn't schedule in the time to work, and they were okay with me coming back to work for the next semester without having to quit and reapply.

The work is not as physically or mentally difficult as, let's say, a restaurant job, but this is only my opinion. 

They provide pretty good training when starting, and they are very on top and organized when it comes to keeping documentation updated about clients. This is great since coworkers are able to stay on the same page when working with various individuals. 

If management has any issues with work ethics, they make sure to bring up these issues in a group meeting (or privately, one-on-one), while ensuring that you have the chance to share any issues you've been encountering in the workplace. 

Overall, Garth Homer is a great place to work at and I would definitely work here again.

A typical day involved quite a bit of activity and planning. I learned a great deal about being part of a team and also gained greater empathy. Management worked hard to involve staff in decisions and made an effort to engage in meaningful dialogue about changes that may benefit clients and staff. The culture was upbeat and it was a fun atmosphere. The hardest part of the job was that sometimes there were crisis situations where a client may escalate to violence, however with the behaviour supports in place and proper training, I was able to de-escalate potential crises. The most enjoyable part was doing personal planning with clients on the goals they wanted to achieve and then witnessing them achieve these goals. This job truly made me feel that I was helping to make a difference and at the end of the day I felt good about my work.

Its the type of job where the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. Start as a casual, get to know the teams, and apply when job posting are up on the team you like. There's a lot of mobility throughout the organization. Once you find your fit, its very rewarding work, and fun too! Community Support Workers, facilitate day programs. That includes community outings, recreational activities, art projects, and what ever else you might like to do. There's also the Vocational Counsellor positions that help clients explore their passions and get jobs. Best suited for people who can uphold strong professional boundaries but still love helping people.

I worked at Garth Homer Society for several months, and unfortunately, my experience with the management was poor. There was a severe lack of communication, which often led to confusion and missed deadlines. Additionally, the managers were prone to micromanagement, which made me feel undervalued and untrusted. I also noticed a lack of support from the management, which made it difficult for me to feel motivated and confident in my work.

Despite my efforts to address these issues, they were never fully resolved, and it ultimately led to my decision to resign. I believe that these issues could have been addressed with better management practices, and it's unfortunate that they were not.

Based on my experience, I would give Garth Homer Society a rating of one star. I hope that the organization takes steps to improve their management practices in the future."

If you are patient, kind and want to make meaningful connections with people with disabilities this is the job for you.

Each program is super different, so definitely do casual shifts first to get a sense of what you like best. Some are loud, chaotic, bustling... some are quiet, calm and structured, some involve more personal care and some are just behaviour support. 90% of the staff here are fun to work with, a few aren't as great but that's to be expected.

Overall, it is decent pay, good sick time and vacation time (for full time positions). Worked there for 3.5 years and loved it. It has its challenges but most of the time is getting to explore the community with awesome people.

Working at GHS has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The leadership fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation, empowering employees to contribute their best. Overall, I'm genuinely excited to be part of this dynamic and forward-thinking organization.

Garth homer was a great place to work. Management was fair and approachable. Co-Workers and the persons served were great as well. There are many different programs and opportunities to try out. If you work hard, put the persons served first and are punctual/professional it will be noticed. Dealing with people with diverse abilities isn’t easy, but GH trains staff on how to deal with certain individuals. Communication was also great within the team I worked and with management.

Awesome clients, awesome frontline staff. High staff turnover; most beefs are due to upper management. Positions (apart from casual & management) are BCGEU unionized; vacation and sick time are accrued. Regular work week hours that suit life quite well if you have kids/childcare needs. Due to the demographic they serve, it can be high stress at times but teamwork approach between frontline staff helps with that. 

Working at the Garth Homer Society has been a truly positive experience. The team is incredibly supportive, and there's a strong sense of collaboration and respect among staff. Management is approachable and genuinely cares about employee well-being and professional growth. The work is meaningful, and I feel like I'm making a difference every day. Overall, it's a great environment for anyone looking to be part of a mission-driven organization with a strong and inclusive culture.

Garth Homer is a great place to work whether you have been in this field for awhile or just starting out. There are tons of opportunities at GH and they seem to promote from within which is great. If you are patient, compassionate and motivated you will be successful. Management is great and is always on top of things. Communication within the company was fantastic. There are many different programs as well.
