Worked at GD on a 1 year design engineering contract. I had the opportunity to expose myself to design and development so I liked the fact that the experience catered to my interests. Given the type of employment and me being a recent grad. I was quite happy with the pay and the employees are exceptionally friendly. 

Things to know/watch out for:

Understand the dynamics of the workplace especially if you are junior and you want to learn. Releasing parts and systems is the fun part and a very good way to learn. Typically the team lead assigns who is going to design what however, it is a responsibility that everybody vies for. The team leads would typically be inclined to assign such responsibilities to more experienced staff. So make sure you ask and insist on being involved.

You will have to assume responsibility if you are junior and you want to learn. If you don't assume responsibility you will end up pushing paper throughout your presence at the company.

Since its a defence industry. There is no constant demand for design and production. So design ramps up when a contract is won followed by production after which layoff season starts until another contract is won. Senior staff tend to stay back to support R&D efforts where as less experienced personnel are let go of.. Having said that, I would not rate it well for job security.

Overall, nice unique experience, plenty that you can learn from. I am glad I worked there.

Working for GD was a horrible experience between nepotism gone wild and poor manager who believe to be a leader you have to threaten and "ride" the employee.  Going to Human resources to complain your human rights have been violated or the working conditions are unsafe is a one way ticket out the door.   This is a company that says all the right things, but cannot back them up.   I have heard of people being physically attacked by other co-workers with no consequences to the other worker.   The battle damaged vehicles coming back from the front line are not "clean" but HR will tell you they are and that you are a liar.   I have seen things that GD did not prepare me to see.  Forced to work over-time upto 7 days a week for over a year.   No regard for burning out employees,  plenty more waiting in line to join GD is the theory they subscribe too.

Pay is good compared to most, as are the benefits. Flexible hours for most employees. If you have friends in high places, then your good when the company lays off, otherwise you are just a number. Working hard here doesn't seem to get you ahead. The cyclical nature of the business is frustrating as you can be standing on the curb in a downturn. 

Management needs tuning up, as seems to be a common thread at most work places. Management is a tight group and doesn't back stab, if you drink the coolaid. Otherwise, you get shown the door.      If management decides they don't like you, for whatever reason, they are out to get you......most don't survive and are out the door quickly.

I am disappointed at the lack of R&D that goes on and I think it affects business negatively. Too much management and not enough workers. Too much like goverment....

As you know, My name is Niwatana. I have over 20 years of experience working as mechanical assembler/Material handler. Throughout those years I have gained experience in all areas manufacturing operation. Including SMT, Mechanical Assembly, inspection, Hi-pot testing, Final testing, Park gaging and a forklift operator. I'm known for my willingness and ability to get a task done right, Even within tight deadlines and I like to be busy. I am also known for my ability to form close relationships with my Co-workers. In fact, My Co-workers used to joke around about how I knew everyone, and where everything was and how to do everything in Health and Safety rule where I worked. A typical day after work I went fishing or play sport.

This company has numerous projects which require cutting edge technology and innovative minds to complete them to the necessary satisfaction. The flexibility exists to work on various elements of a project such as System Design, Testing, Requirements compilation, Programming, etc. The management is easy to communicate with and provides avenues for advancement if you show ambition and productivity. The co-workers are fantastic and commonly engage in team building exercises such as bowling, soccer, and hockey. Dealing with different levels of decision making can be frustrating when work deadlines must be achieved. However, the work that is finally achieved is satisfying in that it is directly implementable by the Soldiers.

As a long term employee of General Dynamics, I feel I am in a position to give them a very positive and honest review. Through strong leadership, GDC has overcome many obstacles over the years to enable itself to thrive in the marketplace. Being recognized as a grandfather in hi-tech, it has built its reputation on quality products and delivery excellence.

The days can be long, but don't have to be. Due to limited resources on larger projects, employees may have to be flexible on work times in order to work-in when resources are available. 
Training and advancement are available and mentoring is part of corporate culture.
Flexible hours are available.
Long hours and tight deadlines are the hardest part of the job.
Camaraderie with colleagues and associates is the best part of the job. There are corporate teams and events sponsored throughout the year.
Well established development processes and support systems help to make projects manageable.

An average day in diagnostics at GDLS-C involves searching through source data and reviewing vehicle designs to write troubleshooting documents for their vehicles. You learn a lot about the mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and communication systems that go into each vehicle and get to dig into some really complex technologies. While reading through all of the technical data may not be everyone's cup of tea, using your problem solving skills to identify failure modes and create troubleshooting procedures for these vehicles is definitely my favorite part.

My day started with email and messenger communication. Going through your work, if you have special projects, looking at schedule to see what I was up to that day. 1/2 hour lunch. Afternoon meetings, team meeting once a week.  Once a month company overview

I learned many programs. I was doing a lot inventory control which I am very versed in but I learned about goverment warehouses.  I learned 3 new systems
My co-workers with great team players and I made many life long friends.

The most enjoyable part was all my work with data. I enjoy analyzing data.  I was able to work with management.

As an Area Manager of the Field Service Team I was responsible to:

Analyze the scope of work required to complete engineering changes to the GD produced family of armoured vehicles
co-ordinate parts ordering and shipping to the customer facility.
Team selection to travel to install changes 
Arrange Travel for all personnel
Supervise personnel at the job site
Maintain accurate vehicle records
Input information into the vehicle database at the completion of the job
