I was given excellent training and support by management and co-workers.  As I began to learn more, the opportunities were there for me to take on extra duties.  I worked 5am-1pm shift and enjoyed the staff and visitors.  Had I not left for school, I would have stayed.  I really enjoyed my time there and I do miss it.  It was an old building and everyone did as much as they could given the circumstances.  The new building is underway and hopefully will be built by 2024/25.  It is a busy place and sometimes chaotic but this is the current world of healthcare.  At the end of the day, the staff and management are the reasons why I loved working there.  

Toxic management that lies to look good on paper. Director of care does not provide enough orientation shifts, putting employees at risk. Working with the residents is the best part; although, they are severely understaffed and use agencies quite often. 

They have until January of 2025 to install fire sprinklers, until then they prefer to compromise the safety of staff members and residents.



The work itself is ok but the culture of the company is not healthy and will often cause those working around you to be two-faced when talking to you ( i.e talking friendly towards you but badly about you towards other staff). If you are a minority I would highly recommend you find somewhere else to work as you definitely will not feel welcome here. The residents are great but the staff and management are the real problem.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I am a RN supervisor so I work with Dr. on rounds, input orders and assist RPN’s

This was a fast paced environment,skills and proper technique is needed at all times, team work is essential, there is always a learning opportunity. Management and staff are always there to assist.Although my position was that of a student I was always given the respect due a co-worker,the hardest part of working was the attachment to the residents knowing that the stay at the facility was limited to the duration of the placement.   

Strathaven is, like any healthcare facility, a physically demanding and a faced pace work environment. However, this particular facility is more difficult than most as the building itself is quite dated which leads to insufficient space for both staff and residents to perform their daily tasks. The residents are lovely and (most) of the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. Wages are fair, especially as casual or part time if you don't need the benefits.

I worked in the front reception area as a Covid swabber, part of the screener team. I was trained on reception as well. The management team was excellent and always available to chat for whatever reason, no judgment. 
The staff were amazing!! They made my days fun and  we’re very supportive. 
I moved away for school but otherwise I would still be there. I really enjoyed my job and there were lots of opportunities to learn and grow.  

A good work place, like you are part of a family, everyone is welcoming and friendly. A different type of long term care home in terms of population. Wonderful co-workers. Most enjoyable part of my job were the clients for whom you are trying to provide the best means of programming and the staff, to empower them and help them expand their vision and horizon.

I get to meet new people and I get to listen to the residents stories. The workers have a passion to care for the residents and they are trained professionals. I love going there whenever I have a chance outside of school.

I love it at Strathaven. It showed me where I want to be for the rest of my life. 
I am going to school for P.S.W. thanks to all the wonderful people that have inspired me.
