Really good pay, the lunches are ridiculously good, free shuttle to and from work

Incredible amounts of bureaucracy, minimum 6 weeks of design document review cycle for any code changes, promotion driven development means you'll be working on your boss's harebrained idea instead of something meaningful and that everyone is out for themselves, no community feeling, constant threat of layoffs for no reason.  It's a meat grinder and they don't care.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic.  Everything is driven by promotion, so nobody shares ideas for fear of getting their promotion stolen.  They claim a blameless culture, but in reality blame rolls downhill - you'll even get blamed for other people's mistakes.  Management is incentivized to push their pet projects on you.  Most people there think that they're god's gift because they're there. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Mentoring junior engineers who are really unskilled, navigating your boss's daily whims, lots and lots of meetings (like, 2-4 hours every day).

I have been with the company for 2 years and it still feels like the first day. People are very smart and everyone is willing to help and collaborate. They trust you to do the right thing and you can normally choose what and how to work on projects, without anyone looking over your shoulder but offering guidance and a lot of resources if needed. Work hours are whatever I see fit and I have been provided with everything to equip my WFH environment. The offices are amazing and it's the first time I look forward to going there. The benefits and perks are great, you are actually encourage to take leaves, PTO and enjoy extra days off. 
Once you have a certain tenure, be prepared to deliver or be left behind. This is a meritocracy and just sitting around doing nothing will get out of the door.

The interview process was demanding but recruiters help you get prepared. Be ready to code on a whiteboard and have your data structure knowledge and Big O memories refreshed.

While I was there, I felt like a valued employee by my team and the company as a whole. The culture of openness was impressive and changed my views on how a company should be run.

That said, it's not for everyone and the Google of today is not the same as the early 2000's. It has "grown up" and lost a lot of the playfulness and deliberate wanderlust that made the company and the brand so powerful and successful. It will continue to be an important place with great opportunities for learning and growth, but those looking for the impact and ownership of a startup should look elsewhere.
