I have been working with Home Instead as a caregiver since September 2024, and it has been a truly fulfilling experience. A typical day at work involves assisting clients with their daily routines, including personal care, meal preparation, companionship, and ensuring their overall well-being. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned in this role is patience and adaptability. Every client has unique needs, and being able to provide compassionate and personalized care has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
The management team at Home Instead is very supportive, always ensuring that employees feel valued and heard. They genuinely care about our well-being, provide necessary training, and are always available for guidance. The workplace culture is warm and encouraging, built on respect, teamwork, and a shared commitment to delivering quality care. It truly feels like being part of a family.

The hardest part of the job is seeing clients struggle with health challenges or experiencing emotional moments with them and their families. However, knowing that I am making a positive impact on their lives keeps me motivated.
The most enjoyable part of the job is forming meaningful connections with clients and seeing the positive difference my care makes in their daily lives. The gratitude and smiles from those I assist make every effort worthwhile.

What I Learned: I learned the importance of patience, empathy, and effective communication. Every client is different, and understanding their unique needs and preferences is crucial for providing the best care. I also gained valuable experience in managing time efficiently and handling various tasks under pressure.

Management: The management was supportive and provided clear guidelines and training. They were responsive to any concerns or questions, ensuring that both the clients and the staff were well taken care of. However, there were times when communication could have been improved, especially regarding schedule changes.

Workplace Culture: The workplace culture was one of teamwork and mutual respect. Colleagues were always ready to assist one another, creating a positive and collaborative environment. The focus was always on providing the best care for the clients, which fostered a strong sense of purpose among the staff.

The Hardest Part of the Job: The most challenging aspect of the job was managing the emotional toll of working with clients who are in difficult situations. It can be tough to see someone in pain or struggling, but it also motivates you to provide the best possible care.

The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job: The most rewarding part of the job was seeing the positive impact of my work on the clients' lives. Whether it's a smile, a thank you, or just knowing that I made their day a little better, those moments make all the challenges worthwhile.

While the clients and recruitment team were wonderful to work with, the company's policies and communication were inconsistent and unclear. 

Key Issues:

Confusing Sick Policy:
During training, we were told that calling in sick wouldn’t be held against us—but in practice, that wasn’t the case. The company has a zero-tolerance policy for ANY illness (even mild sniffles), which led to me being removed from the schedule for five days at a time when I was honest. If even minor illnesses aren’t tolerated, and result in missing 5 days of work, how many caregivers feel pressured to lie about being sick? This policy could risk client safety. 

Poor Communication & Sudden 
Termination:
During what was supposed to be a scheduling discussion about my recent sick-related absences, I was abruptly dismissed from the meeting itself because they suspected I had a sniffle. This was confusing as they had called the meeting to emphasize the importance of shift attendance, yet cut short the very conversation about these expectations because of my minor symptoms.  I followed up to confirm everything was okay, and they assured me it was—yet I was still not scheduled for the two weeks after that meeting. When I emailed about job security they assured me once again that everything was fine just for them to terminate me 4 days later despite multiple direct conversations where I sought clarity for two weeks on this matter. The lack of transparency was frustrating, especially when I made every effort to communicate openly.  

Final Thoughts:
-The clients truly made the job rewarding. 
-If zero tolerance on being sick is the rule, it should be stated upfront, not contradicted later.

 I hope they continue refining their processes, as the clients deserve reliable and well-supported care. Unfortunately, my experience fell short. 


office staff doesn't seem to care. Money is what is important. so they will just do what they have to, good or not to keep clients. caregivers have been asked to work privately by clients because they don't like management.  Caregivers have an extreme risk of caregiver burnout, because we get calls all the time to work even when we have said we cant because of being over worked..but that doesn't seem to matter. sometimes, after we have said no to the scheduler, the boss will call and ask so we feel bullied. But the whole part of this job is that we are supposed to be allowed to accept clients or not, and many of us cant take jobs at the last minute. Then I feel we get penalized if we say no. and we can lose hours because of it.

 There is very little training. I was put out into my first client without even having an orientation or anyone to come with me. It was months before that even happened, Pays get messed up, alot!  Then caregivers have to come in to the office and ask for it to be fixed. The boss/ owner doesn't seem to have time for the caregivers. The scheduler seems to pick favorites, so our hrs can be just taken away or given at her whim. If we call in to discuss a client, it doesn't seem to go anywhere. There is no follow up. 
There is a lot of turnover, not only in caregivers, which is VERY high. But in the office staff too. It just seems chaotic. 

The best part of the job is the clients. I love helping them, and spending time with all my clients. 

The pay is not very good. If you want to work here, you cannot rely on the money. 

If you want hours, you really have to be available 24/7 and on call. which makes it difficult to have a life outside that.

My time with this company was disappointing and stressful. While they promote themselves as a supportive, employee focused workplace, the reality is far different. The company clearly prioritizes profit over both its staff and clients.

Scheduling was a constant source of frustration. Employees are frequently contacted early in the morning, late at night, and even on their only day off in weeks, with pressure to take shifts. Travel between clients was unpaid, which adds up quickly, especially given the low wage of $16-$18 an hour and lack of benefits like paid sick leave, health coverage, or maternity leave.

Management is disorganized and often unprofessional. Multiple scheduling managers handle every employee, which leads to confusion and inconsistent care for clients. For example, clients with dementia were often assigned 4+ different caregivers in a single week, which is distressing and avoidable. When I reached out for help or clarification, I was passed around to two or three different people before getting an answer.

While there are a few outstanding team members who care deeply about their work, the overall culture does not value its employees. There’s no real investment in the well being of staff or clients.

You’re genuinely better off working somewhere that will value you, offer basic benefits, and treat you with respect. 

I don’t recommend this company to anyone seeking a sustainable or respectful workplace. It’s way harder than it needs to be. You’ll find your mental health declining over time.

I have been working for the Mississauga and Etobicoke offices for several years now and it is unquestionably the best organization that I have ever worked for.  

This is definitely a demanding job and the environment is fast-paced.  At times it is stressful dealing with the very emotional needs of clients and a heavy work load, but you come out at the end feeling great about the contribution that you have made and the impact that it has on the families that you support.  At the same time, I am grateful to work along side of individuals that share that same passion and commitment, who always support me. 

The owners of these franchises are very invested in their employees.  I, like many, have benefited from their continued support, mentoring and the opportunity for career growth.  Besides my own movement within the organization, we have had CAREGivers advance their skill set from free education that is provided regularly, some have been promoted into operational roles within the organization and then there are office coordinators that have now have reached Manager and Director roles.

The intrinsic rewards of this job are exponential and monetarily we are equally compensated.   Staff have also been rewarded with bonuses, quarterly incentives, monthly movie nights, trips, dinners and list goes on and on.

At first, all of this was unbelievable.  I thought that this was the “honeymoon phase” and I would get a better perspective on the business months into it, but six great years later and I happy and hoping to be a “lifer”.

Typical day started with arriving at your client's location ans logging in before starting to work.  Organizing and executing task needed as well as communicating with client.  Once completed, logging out, and moving on to your next client.  Forming a relationship with your client enables an easier work experience for both you and the client.

I learnt that even though a task may be requested by may different clients, the same task is not applied the same.  Each person is different with different routines, and require different attention in different areas.  Nevertheless, the physical tasts remains the same.

Managing my look loard and life came easy for me as I used my off times to complete my personal endeavors.

The work culture was  familiar as I had worked in the health field for numerous years prior to working at Home Instead.  The independence you have over your job is amazing with the security of the team to assist.

Hardest part of the job would be the remote areas we served in the winter.  Going out at 5am to get to a client location for 6 am , and walking from the cold into a hot shower is a recipe for illness.

Most enjoyable part was the freedom to detox after every client while you drive away to your next client.  Using music therapy to relax and prepare for the next experience was most enjoyed.

As you know....this is a hard  job, but it does not have to hurt if applied correctly.


The job requires a high level of personal care and responsibility, yet the pay is only slightly above minimum wage, which doesn’t reflect the complexity of the work. The nature of the role demands more than what is being compensated, especially given the emotional and physical demands involved in caring for others.

In addition to the low pay, the reimbursement for gas is woefully insufficient. I found myself spending more on travel than I was earning from shifts, particularly for short one- and two-hour shifts. For example, I would make $15 for a one-hour shift, but the cost of gas for the round-trip drive would often exceed that amount. When I raised this concern with management, I was told that these shifts were not optional, which left me in a situation where I was actively losing money.

It’s disappointing because I truly enjoyed the work itself and believe in the importance of the role. However, the financial strain made it impossible to continue. I feel that those on the front lines, especially in a job that requires such a high level of care, should be compensated more fairly for their time and efforts.

If you're considering a job here, be aware that the pay and travel reimbursement may not be enough to cover your costs, especially if you're in a role that requires significant travel. While the work is meaningful, the company’s compensation model is not sustainable for employees who are putting in the hard work every day.

i worked at home instead for just over a year and it gave me such crippling mental health problems that I had to quit. During my interview I was told that the position was going to be casual and that there was no guarantee about hours, however, within 6 months to a year I was told that I had no option but to work at least 20 hours a week despite also having another part time job. I told my bosses multiple times that I was not comfortable working with a client that was physically aggressive towards me yet they forced me to continue going. I was also forced to go do end of life care because "no one else wanted to go" at 18 years old and never having the proper training for end of life care. you were expected to put your entire life on hold and at their mercy. got a last minute doctors appointment? they wont let you go if you have a shift. Good luck booking appointments on days you don't have a shift, you're on call for the entire day. you are expected to answer any phone call or text immediately no exceptions and answer emails within an hour also no exceptions. You are told upon hiring that you are allowed to refuse three shifts a month yet when I tried to do that for a shift they gave me about an hour notice for, they told me I was not allowed to do that. they don't care about their employees at all, they just care about their money

Home Instead is a non-medical home support company that specializes in senior care. It is a 24 hour company with a never ending need for client services to keep someone living independently at home for as long as possible. A great benefit to working with the company as a caregiver is you can join the team with zero experience or have many years of industry related knowledge. They provide all the training you need and pay you for your time. A less desirable factor to the job is compensation either as a care aide or an office admin. For the most expensive home support company, is it discouraging to see the company pay on par with what the market bares. They take a lot of pride on being a provider of choice and it would be great to see them recruit the best of the best by ensuring they are compensated above what the going rate it is in the industry. The work place culture is of a personal home-style feeling; warm and welcoming. It was discouraging to watch a revolving door of office managers come and go with a bumpy transition for clients and caregivers. The most enjoyable part to the job would be the rewarding impact you can make on a client and/or their families lives.
