My typical day in a Health Care setting started with established procedures.  I got my assessment, listened to the morning’s reports and worked efficiently during the day while caring for my patients, researching the clinical setting, and doing my documentation.  It was an acute and fast paced environment where I had to be constantly alert and ready for critical thinking and problem solving. I was ready to gain knowledge and skills as well as help others.  I evaluated my knowledge, skills and personal qualities in relationship to the patients, families, health team and interdisciplinary professionals.  For example, I used my time efficiently to perform patient morning care, V/S checking, physical and physiological assessment, feeding, medication, bed-bathing and documentation.  By managing my time well, I was welcome to assist team members and strengthen and gain farther knowledge and skills.  For example, I advanced my skills in wound care managing, suctioning, catheterisation, Blood sugar monitoring, Intramuscular injection, intravenous therapy and blood transfusion.  Also, from the team I learned the specific care; management and interventions related to cardiac, pulmonary and complex care patients.  I advanced my communication strategies with the patients and their families.  Next, I practiced comprehensive assessments and right documentation related to patients’ admissions, transfer and discharge plans.  Also, I observed, practiced and developed good team and interdisciplinary communication that created a colleagues support system while maintaining patients progress as well as the correct addressing of issues.  I would say the care unit was a nice place of sharing and support that allowed me to enjoy and develop well.  However, due to the acute setting and shortness of professional staff, it was occasionally a stressful environment with a heavy workload.

It is indeed a pleasure working at the establishment. I really enjoyed my shift at this hospital. The shift are long, but the team is very professional and the respect I received base on my knowledge makes me feel part of the team even though I am only a casual worker. I am kept up to date with everything that happens on the unit and the hospital.This speaks volumns to the managerial skills of this particular manager that is responsible for the operational needs of the Child and Adolescent Unit. The hardest part of my job is counselling patients and trying to change their negative thinking to a positive, because I am not there on a regular basis. What I do admire while on my shift is the confidence of the team and the structure of the program along with the cohesiveness of the team. The planning that goes into each shift where each staff has an imput and the respect that is given to each individual opinions. The most enjojable part of my job is the scheduling and program structure that allowed me the necessary time to complete my progress note in a timely manner on the patient that are transferred into my care.

The management team and staff are really professional and friendly while they try to make the work-place a fun and motivating environment as they are all working under time pressure in order to achieve higher standards serving the Hospital's clients.
Everyday is a new day at work as I learn one or more new tricks on stress management; for example, arriving five to ten minutes earlier gives me peace of mind that I have gotten enough time to do my inquiries about what has happened during the shift before mine and prioritize my tasks.
The most enjoyable part of the job is that the management team deals with me friendly and gives me real motivation to finish the task to my best capabilities.
The hardest part of the job is to see some elderly patients have lots of pain while there is no family members around them. Although I personally smile at everyone of them individually and talk to them to remove the feelings of loneliness, but I can sense that does not replace a care coming from their family members.

There's a really negative atmosphere and acceptance of "that's Humber" at Humber River Hospital - from HR, to Management, to the cleaning staff, doctors, RNs, technologists.... and change is frowned upon.  Working at Humber is where ambition comes to die.  I have always been eager and passionate about my field of work, but with Management's lack of appreciation for its staff, and animosity amongst healthcare professionals... it has wilted.

A typical day at work involves being short staffed, under-appreciated, and over-worked.  The CEO will always come from within the hospital network, as any outsider would likely bring fresh ideas and change, and until then nothing will get better.

Money is thrown towards insane things like robots that dance, instead of into proper staffing levels.  The area I work in has never been scrub cleaned, and we are an area that's open 24 hours to ill patients.  

I stay because the crew I work with daily are amazing, and we make it work for each other.  But Humber will never care about my opinions or try to change for the better for its staff; only the way the public views it,  from the outside and ignorantly.

This organization is the worst hospital I have ever worked at.  This is what happens when senior leadership have been at a hospital way beyond their time.  Day to day micro-management and total control are their focus.  

With each dismissive "STOP" [ie.  stop talking - I am not interested in anything you have to say]...or giving you the hand in your face and the "STOP"...they create a dysfunctional climate of fear among for those below.

Their focus fixated on the little picture while money is wasted by those most entrusted to preserve it....

Each day code blue's ring out at an alarming rate while emergency response teams saunter to the location...I can only guess they figure the person is going to die anyways...why run when you can walk.

I hated working there.  I feel bad for the people who have to go there to get treated.  

These poor people who have to access services from this hospital deserve better.  Taxpayers deserve better.

We all deserve better than Humber River Hospital.  

No new building will fix this dysfunction.

Working here was an former non-clinical employee was a horrendous experience. 

Their HR department is a joke. Their onboarding is so bad that their own managers (especially their direct managers) don't even follow up with their new hires in regards to their start day, intentionally setting them up for failure. Which is one of the reasons why the turnover rate is so high and why there's so much restructuring. 

It's blatantly obvious that there is favouritism as soon as you start here and they make you feel like an outsider looking in. 

Managers are incapable of keeping a consistent 1:1 meeting and also lack in emotional immaturity.

And don't even bother asking them for a reference. They will give you some passive aggressive "feedback" on your work performance because they are so bitter that they once again lost another worker because they gave a terrible experience to their staff. In reality, it's the managers that's projecting their failures onto them.

Do yourself a favour and steer clear.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Different events and swag that the have for staff.  CEO(Barb Collins) is very communicative and visible to staff.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of support from manager especially in MH Outpatient department. Feeling like a number and being easily replaced without any empathy, understanding  or support. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work culture is some what diverse but the leadership is not very diverse in certain departments. Specifically Mental Health. 
There is favouritism when it comes to management vs staff.  9/10 they will take the managements word or the staff word. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working in Outpatient. It is work basic business hours. M-F.  It can be busy but, it can be handled well.

Too much work load. Lowest salary in town. Management send you here and there. If you're fast they take advantage of you. No growth since working here. The classification of spd Aide and or Aide are ridiculous. These 2 mentioned positions are the same medical Device Reprocessing technicians but the spd Aide are not allowed to build a tray. How can spd Aide expand their knowledge in the field? And if the department is short of stuff spd Aide helps to build the tray. No experience no trainings. Just read and learn. These should be take in action. All MDR tech should the same works so that everybody can learn. Spd aides are not allowed to build a tray but the manage expect them to hold the ascom. How they are suppose to know what's in the tray or substitutes of an instrument if they don't know how to build a tray? 

In my opinion, management is not supportive and everyone in the workplace lacks accountability.  Workplace culture is extremely toxic in my opinion.  A typical day at this job is answering numerous complaints through phone and email. Don't be fooled by the  title of this position, nobody will acknowledge recommendations or ideas. Instead, people will focus on the external drama instead of the root cause of the issue.  In my opinion, expectations are not reasonable and there is extreme lack of knowledge and support from management. Everyone who interviews here should ask how long the previous staff worked here. There is a huge turnover rate for this hospital possibly because the people training you or telling you what to do will not take accountability for it. Therefore the new employee will suffer the consequences.
