Clerical jobs are criminally underpaid particularly the jobs in the facilities. Shift work is brutal with little to no opportunity to work regular hours, even with longevity and accumulated seniority. Leadership style is antiquated, and mostly punitive. There is little opportunity for advancement. One of the worst issues is administrative clerical staff are given very little training. Managers are stingy about training and coworkers resent training and often treat new employees antagonistically. This is partly attributed to the fact that long term employees are not compensated for the extra responsibility involved in orienting people. Employees get no wage increases with longevity and senior employees are shafted as they are saddled with additional responsibilities but maintain the same wage. The wages in the urgent clinics, barely over $20, the same wage I made starting with ISland HEalth in 1995!  The low pay is horrendous and the hours are awful. You can make more money in the service industry with less complexity and take less abuse from the public. Managers do little to nothing to shield workers from patient abuse. Health care workers are subjected to a tremendous amount of bad treatment from the general public with no support system to combat the difficulties. I would say that, with the low pay, that does not even come close to meeting cost of living requirements, the brutal shift work, indifferent old school managers, and the stress and hardship dealing with an angry public make health care, at least in a support role, untenable. Island Health needs to change their leadership style, lobby for higher wages for their workers and to give workers who have long service periodic raises. Also, hospitals may be 24/7 operations but workers should have a chance to work better hours as they invest years of service. Older people cannot work a graveyard shift one week and a dayshift the next and maintain any quality of life.  The organization is also indifferent and resistant to making work stations ergonomic and healthy. Workers have to fight for basic equipment such as headsets and laptop stands. Work environments are often noisy, chaotic and antithetical to productive work.  Pay is less than what one would make in no skill jobs yet the jobs require expensive post secondary education and extreme multitasking.

In my opinion this is a management top heavy organization with huge discrepancies in wages between the top and bottom.  With the exception of physicans, administrative managment compensation is excessive. A great place for a horrible and ineffective managers with good political skills to find employment for years.  Management tend to get offices with windows and enjoy the perk of creating a virtual solar eclipse for the huddled masses working outside of their closed doors. Seniority rules in this environment, dog eat dog when it comes to holidays, preferred shifts and days off. New employees will take the scraps (if any) of preferred holiday times like the summar or Christmas and this can last for years. You might have to forget about having a holiday wiith your family in the summer. The organization is too big and will never have a sense of team work. You go to work do your best, you get paid for your services, don't expect much more. Extra effort or skills are not recognized. Your job is defined and rigid you will work within the scope of you job regardless of your background or experience. Managers can easily work the system to hire and promote who they want. Casual employees are the worst off with almost no benefits and no job security at all. Even though you may have full time casual employeed for a year or more you can be let go with no notice or compensation. Jobs postings are plentiful for casual employees.

I loved working there at first. Lots of disfunction at first it seemed manageable.

The second in charge told me the manager was in process of finding how to fire me. 
As actually they didn't follow the union rules regarding pay I would have been owed many hrs of over time as would others. They were worried I would realize and file a grievance.

I had an allegation and upon return to work I was told it was still being investigated and that viha thinks I did something.
I was utterly horrified however it was a lie.. I had a yr and half of this.
Then I'm told I need a meeting with my union rep. I had enough and my fiancé asked me to quit.
Basically they deserve each other.. 
could be an amazing place if some management changes made. 
When I quit I got ei, the EI rep said to me I believe in karma in all my years of doing this it's wow.. she was told I was a good worker but got upset over what occurred I couldn't take it.or they would have offered me a different job. At the other house . meanwhile they had tried to reprimand me for abuse over something that didn't occur  and I got ei .. It took me 6 months to recover from this experience.
I had job offers and interviews. But this company refuses to say much to potential employers. 
I emailed the hr person who keeps responding here.. she ignored it.

You are probably hired as a casual. Then you are hounded by staffing to work at locations you didn't say you are available for or shift times you're not available for. Internal hiring is based on seniority- so you're probably going to be a casual for quite some time (I was for FOUR years). There is no respect for care aides, and your coworkers are also burnt out and can be hard to be around. Casuals have to pay for benefits, get no sick time, and no vacation time. The system is very badly broken, but don't expect your manager to be on your side. Also, when you inevitably injure yourself due to the unsafe working conditions and absolutely ridiculous caseload, VIHA will most likely have their lawyers that are on retainer fight against your WCB claim, and win. The one single thing that I loved about my job was working with the residents, and with the caseload (anywhere between 8-15 residents if you are short-staffed) you barely have enough time to ask them how their day is going. My biggest regret is not quitting sooner.

When I was first hired and never had used the Viha  Computer system I found that it would’ve been most helpful if you could have taken courses on their system so you understand fully how that system works. Coming from Fraser health they have computer courses to support your learning ability of their system. Being admin support staff the wages are worse than pathetic and we are so far behind. As for being a casual on call,  the new:call out system  for staffing is very broken. Sad to think of all the money they spent implementing that and they still haven’t got it working the way it should. Working at Oceanside Health Centre has become an absolute joke there as they call it “ The  Oceanside shuffle “ That’s because staffing could not get the calls out in a timely manner  and management has to shuffle staff around to make the day work. Doesn’t make for a great working environment. There is no comradory  among staff and the morale is extremely low. As the saying goes, there is now “I” in teamwork.

For the seven years that I have worked for Vancouver Island Health Authority, I have felt very blessed. I've loved my job and the people I worked with, but it is time for a change. 
My administrative position was in a fast-paced environment, where I have been met with many challenges, but being a resourceful and positive person, I was able to meet them head-on. 
If you are looking for an administrative/clerical position, applying externally for casual positions is the way to go. I started in May 2010 as a casual an always had work. Be willing to train as an admin in several different areas so that you can build your seniority hour and are able to put your foot in the door for a chance at a regular position. You will then gain employer paid health and dental benefits, paid sick leave, paid vacation time and have access to employer associated counseling programs, etc... 
It's been great, but I am definitely ready for a change of environment.

The pay and benefits are relatively good but workload and work environment are horrendous. Employees are not valued at all and patients fare only slightly better. Most employees are kept in casual on call positions with no opportunity to advance or get security. If you are "lucky" enough to get into a permanent posting you will be over worked and mistreated until you get sick and then you will get no support from the employer. When you leave they will try to get out of paying severance or anything else. They say they are one of the top 100 employers but they nominated themselves and then campaigned for votes. Very few employees would voluntarily vote for them. They love to say they have support systems, value employees, blah, blah, blah, but their actions do not support the rhetoric. I've seen too many people have the life sucked out of them here and would not recommend this environment to anyone. You WILL pay the price for your salary.

Island Health has some major issues in regards to management; one issue being they have too many managers/administrators, they will constantly leave units short staffed and say they need more funding to implement a better workload/employee balance but then hire unnecessary administration staff. 
Other issue with management/administration is a lot of those who hold the position are unqualified in one way or another; from never doing the job they are managing, to being such a bully when departmental concerns are brought up to them (I guess in retaliation to possibly making them appear inadequate at their job?). 
It’s a really well paying job, but the lack of camaraderie and teamwork will get to you eventually. And if it doesn’t, there usually is an unhappy employee who’s been there 20+ years wanting to snuff the positivity out of you like it was done to them years ago by a mean manager. 

The job is exhausting, and supervisors and coworkers alike are arguing with you constantly no matter how hard you work and how efficiently you work. There is absolutely no teamwork, and the supervisors and management have not made an effective change to how things have run in the entire 4 years I’ve worked here. The job itself would be fine if the workplace provided the tools we needed to get our job done effectively, but that is not the case and the management doesn’t seem to care enough to change the way things are run. Employee turnover is very high and they do not care about their employees at all. Short staffed all the time. 

I enjoyed and love my job as a Health Care Attendant.  Love all the people am working with, especially the patients, learned from them, laugh, chat, help, care and love them, though sometimes their grumpy, I manage to cheer them up. On the floor am working, which is the 4th floor, we have a very supportive Manager, CNL or clinical nurse leader, our nurses and all the teams on the floor.  Politics, that's everywhere, so, just have to live with it. Patience is the key to success. The reason I want to work in Jacksonville, is because my husband is retired and want to stay and live here. And I want to be close to my families live in Jacksonville, Florida.
