Keewatin Air

Overall a decent experience as a pilot. Lower salaries have made some days hard to bear but the significant flight legs helps propel your flying career quickly. 

Flight ops management has seen numerous changes over the past 4 year but now has a great team that supports the pilot group regardless of their operational stress. Always have felt supported by the current DFO and CP. 

The job takes you north for 2 weeks at a time 24/7 on call. Takes getting use to but Nunavut rewards you with stunning geography and a unique flying experience. 

As with every smaller operator crew retention is a significant issue. Flight line personnel are quick to exit with how hot the industry is. It has been causing scheduling conflict as the company tries to manage the issue. That said there is significant opportunity for OT for those that want it.

The people you work with make it a great experience. We're fortunate to have a great team of men and women flying the line. 

It's not a perfect operation but I look fondly on my time at Keewatin. There have been significant changes that have moved improved Keewatin as an employer over the last few years. It's had it high and low points but overall has been a good run.

Fast paced and moderately stressful but all depends on the current work load. Some days will be slow and some days will fly by. Definitely a lot of responsibility as you progress in apprenticeship levels. Benefit of working on M1 (King Air and PC/12) as well as M2 (Citation 560) aircraft, along with getting experience on P&W PT6 turboprop and JT15D turbofan engines. G1000 units in the King Air’s are user friendly and fairly easy to work on/maintain. The AME’s are helpful and knowledgeable. Opportunity to travel up north to other bases for a 1 or 2 week rotation completely paid for by the company plus per-diem pay. As a medivac and charter airline the company has good covid procedures in place to disinfect the aircraft and its equipment. Company has good benefits, is unionized and the ability to earn hourly premiums. 8.5 hour shift Monday-Friday including two paid 15 min breaks, and one unpaid 30 min break. However, would be nice to have a 1 hour break instead of 30 min. Apprentices are expected to perform ramp agent duties such as providing GPU starts to aircraft, towing planes for pilots, etc. This can be annoying and frustrating as you’re always getting pulled away from your work on the aircraft to do those duties.

During my 4 year term  with Keewatin Air, I found it to be quite fulfilling in many aspects. Working for an operator with high standards and a goal to provide a quality product to its clients. They are in the business of helping those in need which is not always an easy or glamorous job. Although the management and protocols can be a bit difficult or overwhelming at times, their intent to keep the operation efficient requires such although not always justified in my opinion. I can positively state that the considerations of their employees on a personal level for myself was extremely valuable and appreciated, helping with my work life balance and were supportive during difficult times. This type of action only comes from considerate people in leadership roles. The people I had the fortunate opportunity to work with in a team atmosphere was one of the best I have had the honor to be a part of in 24 years working in the industry.  

What is the best part of working at the company?
I like the company’s support of its staff.  It’s an exciting job where no day is ever the same.  I feel the training prepared me well for the role.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The shifts are long and sometimes a 10 hour rest period isn’t enough.  12 hours would be better. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Positive, supportive and fun.
Nice apartment/hotel room to stay in.
I like having access to a car.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Once you get activated you start preparing for your specific triage.  Gather equipment, organize your care plan, touch base with the pilots regarding flight needs, check your plane, pick up your pt (s), care for them on the plane ride to the receiving hospital, deliver report, then clean, restock and go back to your apartment and either rest or remain activated until your time is up.

There are you a few things to know about Keewatin Air. You are in the Arctic. You work 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. You are on all call 24/7. You work up to a 14 hour duty day, 10 hour rest. These are all things that are told to you upfront but you should be aware of. 

The stern opening is to set expectations. Keewatin Air is easily one of the best experiences you can have flying period. You are given decent freedom in a beautiful - remote - area of the world. Take advantage of this.

Currently management at Keewatin is in a wonderful place. Some truly amazing people are in the office trying their best to support you. Any issue if safety is a complete non concern, they will have your back. 

The schedule is amazing, the pay is getting competitive, and the flying is incredible. It is hard not to recommend Keewatin to any hard working individual. 

Good place to work just for some aviation experience or a decent wage. It could be stressful if alot of medevacs show up on your shift, I worked overnights so I didn't have much work and it was laid back but sometimes I'd get 2,3 or even 4 planes back to back and it becomes stressful, but overall not too bad if it's overights.

 It was awesome of them to give me shifts depending on my school hours and I did really appreciate that, management is better than most places I'd say. But this one time there was an incident involving cleaning up a biohazard and I had no training and frankly not my job, I called my supervisor and said I'm not comfortable doing that and they said that it's your job but eventually they realized they were in the wrong.

The money, 13 days off, experience northern Canada 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management, critical calls with no attending physician 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Management doesn’t care about you.  They are extremely selfish. Trying to earn the most profit. They overwork their staff to the fullest potential. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
-Dispatch calls you for medevac 
-Medevac last 14-24 hours on very small plane
-10 hours rest period post medevac in either housing or hotel
-very likely to get called almost immediately once rest period is up

I had a good experience overall understanding that you will go, constantly. Minimum downtime should be expected between deployments, so sleep when you can and eat when you can. 
OT policies are impossible to meet so expect to work for free from time to time if you are stuck in community due to weather. 
Be a self leaner!! You're knowledge and skills will be pushed waaaay past your training with expectations to use equipment you would never touch anywhere else (ie: Nurses/medics do not often use vents).
It is a just with loads of air miles and some interesting experiences. But being away from home and the rolling schedule destroys any circadian routine get old without adequate compensation.

The company promises you the world and then leaves you high and dry. The scenery is amazing and you may work with one or two genuine people. Very clique orientated group of practitioners with large egos. There is very little mentoring and if they don’t like you, you will know and fail immediately. It does not matter how willing and able you are as a practitioner, if you are in the clique you won’t make it. Management is pretty much absent in the actual gritty day to day details and assigns tenured practitioners to pick and choose who gets what. You best be a favourite or you may run one long call or get bumped. If you want to get into flight, find another place.
