La Carnita

Truly one of the worst companies in the industry.  They exemplify sexism, turn a blind eye to harassment, and often fire employees who speak up. Servers are forced to put their tips in a 'tip pool' that is extremely ambiguous and often means that servers walk out with much less money than they earned on shift. They turn a blind eye to harassment, specifically from male superiors.  They have no problem 'letting go of staff' when business declines, often leaving employees jobless with little notice.  Specifically over the last year at the east end location of this company three female staff were 'let go' due to downsizing, but then were replaced with male staff.  Anyway, this company comes across as cool and hip but they really suck, they don't care about their staff and promote an environment that can often leave employees feeling vulnerable, and helpless.

They tend to hire good and fun people that is extremely well liked and easy to work with. None of which stay for too long however. The company will try and keep your hourly income as close to minimum wage as possible. The work is tedious and heavy as you would expect in any restaurant. And if you ask for a raise, it wont be given until you get a promotion. The promotion entails more stress, responsibility, and you will need to stay until 4am just to get a pay bump from $14.00 (2019, current minimum wage) to $14.60. So if you want to work hard with amazing people but be treated as a if you deserve less for the experience that you have or the work that you do, then this is a place for you.

CONS 

work life balance very poor. extremely long consecutive days. 

salary is very low but there is overtime (you usually go into overtime)

tips are individually minimal and depend on the hours you work. a dollar per hour of work

the managers are toxic and judgmental and rude. billy the chef especially. 

culture is stressful and employees overworked 


PROS

usually enough kitchen staff so that you arent overwhelmed in a rush

good advancement prospects because lots of employees and managerial positions

co workers very personable and willing to cooperate for the most part

During weekdays, the work is quite slow and you will be cut early.
During particular evening and weekends, the work is very fast and you're everywhere at once.

The employers are serious but relaxes. They tailor your schedule around your preferences and they personally care about you.

Overall, as a starter job, the salary (+ the tips) was very good.

It was a good experience working at La Carnita, Mississauga. Meeting new people and building relationships on spot was the key. Some days it was slow and someday it was busy. The most enjoyable experience I had was free drinks, meal and spending time with awesome employees. Fun and supportive management. Good luck.

Egotistical upper management. Owner always came in with big group of friends, forced paying guests out of tables, ran huge bills ($700+) made manager comp his meals and NEVER tipped staff.
Young & inexperienced servers were promoted to managers, and ran the business like a dictatorship.

They always treated me very respectfully. It was busy working at the kitchen but everyone helped each other. So Im gratefull to have had La Carnita as my first job in Toronto and also very gratefull that they trusted me.

I enjoyed working at La Carnita everyday because of the nice environment and good people to work with.a lot of different culture working out there which is nice u get to know different type of people.

Good for experience but not worth it to stay for a long time. It has a bad management all they want is to earn money and that’s it. Low salary if you don’t ask for raise it wont gonna happen forever. Always understaffed and cutting you time. 

management is nice so far, i start working tomorrow. When walking out from the interview staff greeted me with smiles and happy attitudes. I felt very welcomed and more so at ease that ill be working there
