Simons treats their employees really well. For retail they definitely pay well, especially for starting positions. They also keep as professional of an atmosphere for staff as they do for customers, which says a lot, and they truly show respect each member of their staff. They even have mental health days. The training process is extensive and they really make sure that all employees are prepared before they go out on the floor.

However, if you have retail experience you might find this job exhaustingly boring. There are no sales goals so the opportunity to get to know coworkers and customers is limited. Most shifts will be spent staring at walls twiddling your thumbs. You are not allowed to leave your department have to stay by the cash desk and typically work alone. For an extroverted person who loves to work in a team, this is not an ideal job. But, if you prefer more slow paced job and don’t really enjoy working hands on customer service, this could be the job for you. Also, the dress code is very elaborate. Women have two options: you could either wear dress pants and a blazer with shoulder pads, or you could wear tights with a skirt and a blouse that covers your armpits. Men have to wear suits every day to work. As far as advancement, since there are only about six managers in the whole store and over 100 employees, there really is not much room for growth and advancement, unless originally hired as a manager. 

Simons is definitely doing something right. I had coworkers who had worked there for 5+ years and love it. Most managers were considerate and welcoming. It just completely depends on your personality and your working style. If you’re happy working alone and are more introverted this could be a perfect job where you will want to stay a long time.


Most thorough training period, they tell you absolutely everything you should know and are super patient and accommodating, management WILL help you, even when I joined during a very busy holiday period, they never gave me a hard time at all.

Comparing my experience to so many friends who've also worked in retail, I felt really lucky working at Simons since I loved every manager (except one, but they were fired promptly as they didn't respect schedules). The managers really listen to you and accommodate as best they can, especially when you're a student. Also, they won't let you deal with any difficult customers on your own, they take over quickly as they know it shouldn't be your responsibility.

Simons has multiple sections with very different types of clothing/items, and if you enjoy working as a type of 'floating crew' like me, who likes jumping from section to section to keep things interesting and help out wherever it's needed, they encourage it and will thank you for it. You won't be bored (unless business is very slow).

A downside is the somewhat frequent snobby customers who treat you as a personal stylist and assistant. La Maison Simons has a good reputation for good service, so some customers will take it too far and take advantage of you. Just let your managers know.

What is the best part of working at the company?
as far as the company itself goes there is not much to report. Pay , hours and I guess the friendships you pull from the location would’ve been the “ best parts.” 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management. Lots of silly rules and gaslighting happening. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Management is absolutely horrendous. There is a lot of mistreatment , gaslighting and weird behavior happening. 
The sales associates were all very friendly and got along but since leaving I still hear how unorganized and stressful they all feel. 
They’d give out food and gifts to make up for the fact operations don’t move smoothly here.  Everyone was burnt out and sick of it. Stock organizers don’t get the same discounts as the other employees it’s strange. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You clock in , grab your cash bag , fill your till. You start on “ put backs “ that’s any of the clothes on the rack from the previous day. You then spend an ungodly amount of time unloading , hanging , organizing never ending , new product. You break ( full timers break 3x ) the store opens and you do a mix of cash duties , fitting room and organizing the floor. You will also be price marking throughout your day.  There’s no set duties everyone does a little of everything and expect to be stressed and gaslight throughout the day. 
You fold tees all day. The end of your day is just cleaning as they try and get everyone out of the store , then cash drop.

Worked here for 2 years and all I can say is be prepared to be overworked, and under appreciated. Your responsibility are as followed, loss prevention/security, first aid, administrative duties, maintenance, and package returns (newest one).

Loss prevention side 
Lack of training for self protection on the job, focus more on camera work than anything. Expected to approach subjects but however not taught much if things take a turn for the worse, which half the time they do. 

If you ever get injured as well, good luck, there is no real plan in place for work side injuries for loss prevention agents and are often left to handle the aftermath yourself. 

Work life balance 
It’s none existence, due to low numbers of staff, it makes it feel impossible to do anything else either then work. Taking time off, only screws your own team and vice versa.

Management 
Be prepared to feel alone, management rarely checks up and often only cares about other employees then loss prevention agents. If they come to you it’s only for the benefit of them. 

The only nice thing was the team, the other loss prevention agents, without the them the job would’ve driven me crazy. 

Working at Simons is great you do feel like Simons really appreciated. Our health benefits are amazing we have access to a mobile doctor, free health care and it only 3.45$ for dental care. We have RRSP and Simons Doubles the amount for you.

Although, there  are some con's like for promotions they are depended if you have the Simons personality or not. If you don't you are less likely to get promoted even though you have the necessary skills for the promotion.

Working at Simons was honestly a lot of fun but also a headache at the same time. Some of the staff is amazing, and some of the staff you try to avoid. Working in the E-commerce Office was again, good at times also brutal at times; there is no windows, no fresh air and you are essentially in a room in the basement staring at a computer with some very dim lights for 8 hours a day answering customer calls, chats and emails. Management is good but I feel they they take multiple meetings throughout the day that they sometimes prioritize over helping you if you need help. If you don't mind any of that, this is the place to be. 

Worked at the company for 5 months prior to getting tailed by a supervisor on a power trip. Watched my every move and despite no managers finding issue with my work ethic. I got belittled by this manager who felt superior. Terrible company because when I brought my concern to the HR she disregarded the fact the man was micromanaging my every move despite doing something that is far from the title of what I was hired for.

long hours on your feet in uncomfortable shoes, you get an hour break if you work a 9 hour shift, there was some favouritism, the regular staff was super kind but there was some cattiness from the managers

- great personable experiences with customers, coworkers and management
- work days always present challenges but ones that you look forward to and there is always help nearby so it is encouraged to step up and take challenges because you will always be supported

stressful, busy and always expect so much out of you often alone, and don't know how to schedule the dress code is too strict you're not allowed to wear what you'd like. they micromanage you a lot and it's quite hectic. co-workers are friendly and always willing to help out.
