This can be what you want to make it. If you are there for the money, forget it. You may get eaten alive.
 This is where the kids get to see you. There is now place to hide. You must be many things at once and it must come naturally. The kids must be challenged at a level they can deal with, then, when they can, you give them a bit more. You must be able to get to know your students; know their limits and their baggage. You don't push an agenda, or demand respect. You must earn their respect through your ability to analyze their needs and abilities, whatever they are. Then it is up to you to deliver. There is no room for an authoritarian, just a leader who can show an interest in their student(s) abilities and try to expand these positive attributes.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Being part of something meaningful to children and education.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not enough training at all.  You don’t know the job at all on the first days.  And not knowing when you’ll get called in again.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
When you are hired as a temp/casual and you only work  or get calls the morning of a work day to come in.  Five or six times in 6 months isn’t enough work and you need to make yourself available everyday.
No training and people at the schools expect you to know what you’re doing when you show up to work.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Attendance in mornings, all day and afternoon.

I've been a casual custodian for 2 1/2 yrs. If not for work on the side, I would never have stayed.
Favorites to one supervisor in particular gets all calls or their own run regardless of hard workers. Rules change daily. You can jump through hoops, going to a job on very short notice and take jobs no one wants, only to receive a punch in the neck.  I've had no calls for weeks and now they are hiring?
There is no seniority for spares.  A newbie got a run before me many times. 
They don't follow city bi laws for florescent light disposal,  I was told to just throw them in the trash bin, but I took them to Lowe's myself.
RUN!

I was responsible for heating and cooling.
daily logging reports done on schools website
maintaining of fan systems , changing filters 
maintaining of circulating pumps
greeting the general public
making sure the school is a safe place 
hardest part of job was trying to keep up with demands etc. trying to be in more than one place at a time
most enjoyable part of job would be seeing people smile when I completed one of their demands

Friendly, questions answered swiftly

There were times kids would not listen

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very good, all staff were welcomiing

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Arrive earlier than scheduled help kids clean up and prep for lunch..they eat lunch then dress for outside play, I watch or participatr

I learned so many new skills that I can transfer into a variety of other domains. The management staff are extremely patient with new employees and they are always willing to help. The culture is very upbeat and task oriented. The most enjoyable part of the job is working with friendly, welcoming people, and having fun everyday, even when the weather did not permit.

Being a part of the community where I teach is very important to me. It is the best way to establish a learning relationship with each individual student. Knowing what is going on in their lives beyond the classroom helps establish a rapport. Being a part of a staff that has those same connections with students and each other, makes for a very supportive environment.

Worked at the different High Schools at different levels.

Day consisted of answering the phone, waiting on the counter, setting up appointments.  Also, any specific jobs for the job title.

I worked with several people in the different main offices and we all
got a long.

The hardest part was when parents or students where angry and 
would yell at you.  

Most enjoyable was seeing students grow every year.

For an occasional Educational assistant the board does not post these union jobs so very difficult to gain permanent positions! Supply positions are suppose to be called through the system however this doesn't not happen and makes it difficult for work to be spread out evenly or through seniority!

I learned many skills, working with different ages, behaviours, disabilities during my time at the school's I assisted in. Great team experience from all staff to ensure the best learning and safety for all students and their families. Excellent work experience.
