Long View Systems

Working at Long View started great. I loved the atmosphere, the management and my team. As time passed however it became apparent that it would be difficult to move up, and more difficult yet to continue loving the company.

I found that time and time again I was passed over for promotions, or even learning opportunities despite the number pats on the back affirming that I was doing a fantastic job. Apart from fulfilling my own job requirements, I strived to learn more and flesh out the role I played by taking on and volunteering to do work beyond expectations. I continuously looked for feedback, and even received confirmation at a later date that my performance in those areas had improved drastically. Despite all of this, I still continued to be passed over for promotions. 

It cannot be said that my time at Long View has been a bad one, as there is plenty of good collaborative, constructive moments and a nurturing atmosphere if only superficial. I want to love Long View, and I absolutely want to stay with the company but truth be told there are limits, and those limits are bills. If my position cannot pay my bills, then I have no choice but to look for that fulfillment elsewhere. Many of my colleagues have left for the same reason that myself and undoubtedly many others can sympathize with: compensation. 

A perfect company is a difficult achievement, a company where employees feel valued, enjoy the work, and have a great work/life balance. Long View touts that they care about work/life balance and I think I would agree. However, in order to have a true work/life balance an employee must be able to comfortably afford their lifestyle. I don't mean to live lavishly, but just to pay the monthly bills, and have some pocket change leftover to save for whatever strikes their fancy.

Long View if you see this, please show your employees that you value them and compensate fairly. Please be fair with promotions and provide true equal opportunity, and recognize those that put in the extra work to go above and beyond with more than gift cards. Please do this and I promise you far fewer folks will have any intention of jumping ship.

An enjoyable place to work overall, but not without it's issues. Would recommend as an employer.

Long View will trust you take on additional work outside your typical role in order to help grow your skills. The company is not growing enough to create job opportunities for most people who are motivated to take those skills to a new position. Join Long View knowing you can get an opportunity to grow your skills on the job. If you want those skills to propel you to a new role role/title/higher pay, you'll likely have to leave.  

Work-life balance can be hit or miss depending on the team. Some teams are run lean, so expect to be busy and potentially work regular overtime, or constantly stressed due to high workload. Either way, usually no one bats an eye if you need a morning off for a doctors appointment, have to time shift for whatever reason, etc. As long as the work is getting done and clients are happy, you're golden.

The people and culture are great. Company is flexible with policies, which is refreshing at times. Unfortunately, flexibility can sometimes be used as an excuse to give special treatment to certain people depending on their role and relationships, and deny the same things to others. When it comes to personal issues, Long View will typically bend over backward to help you out. Leadership really seems to try and be people focused, but I get the sense there's willful blindness regarding problem areas that are difficult to fix.  

Company tends to be reactionary. A lot of fire-fighting, not much fire-proofing. They seem to be working it. On the up-side of that, there's opportunity to present and drive solutions. Most leaders welcome new ideas, including the CEO, who has approved new product lines based on employee suggestions on one occasion I'm aware of. Extra effort is typically recognized, but not always rewarded in a meaningful way.


I worked for Longview, they call themselves LVS for a few years, so I know them thoroughly.

Working with Longview Systems has been deeply disappointing. While the company boasts impressive financial success—built squarely on the backs of hardworking employees and contractors—it consistently demonstrates a disturbing lack of empathy, ethics, and accountability.

Contractors are treated like disposable assets. The moment workloads shift, even slightly, people are offboarded with little warning and zero consideration for the livelihoods affected. There's no stability, no respect, just abrupt exits that leave skilled professionals scrambling.

Pay is shockingly low compared to industry standards, especially given the complexity and intensity of the work expected. But the real insult? If you advocate for fair compensation to meet rising operational costs or basic living expenses, you’re shown the door. Negotiation is punished, not welcomed.

This company’s culture runs on fear, not fairness. It’s a stark example of corporate greed—where leadership prioritizes profit margins and executive bonuses over the basic dignity of its workforce. Behind the glossy façade, there's a system of exploitation and emotional neglect.

If you're considering working here, ask yourself: do you want to dedicate your talent to a company that sees you as a number? One that celebrates its financial success again and again, while cutting corners on the very people who made it possible?

Longview may succeed on paper, but it does so at a deep human cost.


Worked there for nearly 5 years, great bunch of people initially and on the ground with clients and projects, but recently, the last year or so it seems to have lost focus and touch with many employees, the economy in Alberta means they are letting many good people go, which has the knock on impact of hitting service levels and capabilities for their customer base and dropping staff moral to a rock bottom, now many senior & key technical people have moved on or are looking to move due to lack of job security with LVS especially in Calgary.

Its a shame the whole, positive can do vibe of the company changed so rapidy with recent new management and major internal re orgs that put a halt on many peoples career aspirations and plans, even before the recession, with this now impacting on staff and taking many months to deliver on internally, I would not recommend LVS as an employer of choice any more.

I foresee LVS will also need to change their business model, moving away from one of their prior key strengths in the market, maintaining a permanent staff on which they could rapidly pull for customer needs to an increase of contract employees for customer specific projects as they win business in the future, with little difference from "the other guy", they will need to compete more on price alone, as opposed to capability to deliver (which has been much eroded with recent major staff reductions) and they then will have to compete for the contractors out there too.

All they care about is money. They couldn't care less about you or our career as much as they pretend to. 

Management are some of the most selfish, disorganized idiots I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. 

You would think that being an IT company they would be able to get their systems functioning. Their systems are almost constantly down and at their best are barely functioning. What should have been a simple timesheet process change ended up getting delayed 2 years and still is not fully operational.
I've received emails telling me that I need to have my time entered by 1:30PM that day - email sent at 3:45

Absolutely embarrassing

The payroll process is lazy and unfair - any performance incentive is lumped with your regular pay, so any incentive you receive is all but lost entirely to taxes all because their accountants can't be bothered to separate it.

If you are placed at a client site they charge incredibly high amounts for your time (6 figures) but pay you peanuts in comparison. There is also a strict clause they make you sign prohibiting you from working at a site they placed you at, so if you like where they place you, too bad if you want to go work for them directly and make an appropriate salary.

There are limited benefits. Need glasses? too bad. 

The one thing that longview does every year is take all employees to kananaskis delta lodge for a christmas party. What do they not tell you? It's not actually free, the cost of the hotel comes out of your performance 'incentive'

Working for them is endlessly frustrating.

When I first took a position at Longview, I was in need and wasn't thrilled about working a contracted position again. Longview changed my mind about IT contracting. Longview seems to do everything in their power to make sure their employees are enjoying their position. Perks like catered lunches, complimentary coffee/juice/soft drinks, and regular teambuilding events are a breath of fresh air coming from other contracting companies. 

Management genuinely seems to care and is involved in the regular day to day operations. Company policies involve regular meetings with team leads to discuss career options, as performance feedback is provided quickly and is not stacked up for a quarterly meeting. 

Unfortunately I was hired on with a contract term, and they do not have open positions for me. Another point in managements favor is they never sugarcoated this and kept us informed as to the status of opportunities with the company. Management also seemed genuinely upset that they were unable to keep their employees. If they offered me a position I would take it in a heartbeat.

I worked there for a few years and at first starting out it was okay. Two years later the good management started leaving and then new management was hired who are the worst! Long view was a nice place to work and caring management but the new management has ruined the face of LVS. There is favouritism, greed for money, no care for employees (they pretend they care), they promote the ones that barely worked hard and the ones that do work hard are asked to work even harder, more duties added without increase of pay, they are greedy for money even if that means it will mentally affect the staff. They keep restructuring the way to do things which make things worse every time.
Once you stand up for yourself or try to contact upper management to complain, they will try to silence you or fire you in a slick way.
The CEO is greedy for money as well.
No flex days or personal days, you have only 6 days for the whole year. 
My advice is they need to train management and work on genuinely caring for their employees or else LVS will be going down the drain. 

- Hardest part of the job is dealing with middle management. There's often a clear disconnect from the manager of the technical team, and the client management team leading to internal conflicts which we get stuck in the middle of when we're just trying to provide good customer service.
- For some teams, remote work is actively being clawed back in favor of fostering a "collaborative environment" (i.e. trying to spread us thin by putting us on several clients) despite being shown time and time again that this system can actively hurt the service provided to larger clients if their resources are the ones being pulled.
- The most enjoyable part of the job is the technical people on various teams. They can be a good support system where management often fails. 
- Concerns are brought to management often, but canned responses are often given and nothing changes.

— Extremely low pay and benefits with Longview taking 2/3 to 3/4 of what you make. That means that there is **no way that they can pay you a competitive market salary** without lowering their cut, which they will not do.
— Extremely defective, corporate culture: there are many emails about social justice concerns of the moment, but the extremely poor compensation reveals all that as self-servicing and despicable hypocrisy— you claimed care about say, Syria, but you don’t pay me enough to live!
— Many useless emails, almost none of which have to do with your current (real) employer are a morale-lowering distraction from your job. 
— If you’re lucky, like me, you will have a hands off Longview systems manager, who quite obviously does not give two figs about you. I have never, outside of construction, seen such poor management. 

I was so excited to work for long view and hearing about their journey to 100 years. They say they're not about maximizing profits but they are. They say they value good employees but they don't. If you get hired on a contract, you will likely stay on a contract, meaning no benefits, no certifications, no vacation, unpaid lunch. No matter how hard you work, you will be treated worse than someone who does half the work because they are a "permanent employee". I was promised a permanent position because of my hard work, instead I was given more and more responsibilities. The career life planning isn't read or taken seriously either. I came to learn after all the promises that you have to work the service desk a minimum of 2 years (on a contract and severely underpaid in comparison to similar positions) to be considered for a promotion. I wish they were honest up front and provided job security to their employees.
