It is really exciting to be part of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government at this historic time as the Métis Nation within Alberta establishes strong a self-government. I am continually impressed with the programs and services offered to Métis Citizens – which are very focused on supporting youth and very deliberate about passing on culture. When I attended Citizens Gathering, I learned that each citizen of Métis Nation within Alberta has an opportunity to directly shape the future of the nation by interacting with Council and the government departments.  

This positive, supportive and growth-oriented attitude extends to the staff at Otipemisiwak Métis Government. From the first interactions with the incredibly professional HR team, you are treated with respect. As a Métis citizen, I truly enjoy working here. It feels like home to collaborate with others who share our commitment to serving our citizens and community. I admire the strength that everyone demonstrates and how much of a teamwork spirit we have. Each day is a reminder that I am a citizen who works for the Nation, and I take pride in serving our community.

I have had the privilege of learning about different areas within the departments and the considerable effort that goes into serving our Nation. We approach our work with smiles and grace, which makes it all the more rewarding. I am proud to be Métis and appreciate the opportunity to work for our citizens, just as I am one of them. 

I loved being involved in the non-profit work model and the goals of the MNA. Compensation and benefits were great. The projects were meaningful but the management in my department was terrible. Three levels of managers with no prior management experience left staff feeling unsupported, unappreciated, and undervalued. Managers are defensive and unable to acknowledge problems with the work process and staff roles. Team members work in silos with no understanding of what anyone else is working on or overall department goals. The lack of transparency, poor project management, and no responsible leadership created an unbearably toxic environment that I could no longer tolerate. The MNA would do well to evaluate managers' performance based on staff feedback. 

The work was focused on the needs of Métis people and everyone came together to support that mission. Excellent at negotiating with settler governments and being a strong representation of Métis communities. Work was steady, there was a lot of support for stressful situations, and always lots to learn.

Within my role, a typical day at MNA involves managing a variety of tasks to support my team and contribute to overall HR operations whilst supporting employees across the organization.

Management is approachable, supportive, and values employee input. The workplace culture is positive, collaborative, and respectful.

The most enjoyable part of my job is working in a supportive environment where contributions are recognized and valued.

A typical day in my role is varied, balancing financial processing, travel coordination, and administrative support across multiple programs and departments. Management is supportive and open to ideas, and the workplace culture is collaborative, caring, and grounded in Métis values. The hardest part is juggling competing priorities and navigating evolving processes, but the most rewarding part is seeing the impact of our work on citizens and knowing my contributions help support meaningful community programs.

My short time with MNA as a practicum placement has provided me insight on the important work that they provide, and the wonderful people behind the scenes. Everyone I've encountered has welcomed me with open arms, really establishing a company culture of inclusion and kindness. From those I work directly with, to my supervisor, the executive staff &  Madam President - I've felt supported, included, and I always look forward to coming into the office. MNA has provided me experience, knowledge, and people I can look up to. They make it tough to say goodbye.

Enjoyed setting up jobs for the aboriginal people in our area, such as the Aboriginal Labour Market workshop and Open Houses for work placements.
Enjoyed working with positive people that can work together.
Enjoyed setting up the annual events ect: Boxing Day Talent shows.

As a new employee, only employed with the MNA for three months, I can say with honesty that this is a wonderful place to work. Green flags since day one! The hiring process was a little slow, however the onboarding processes were well thought out. The MNA takes great care of their staff and I have been really well supported my first three months!
