Medigas' on-call policy not only places an unreasonable burden on employees but also fails to comply with Ontario's Employment Standards Act (ESA) regarding "deemed work." Under the ESA, "deemed work" refers to situations where an employee is considered to be working even if they are not actively performing their duties. This includes time spent waiting to be called to work or being required to remain available and ready to work during on-call hours.

At Medigas, the on-call requirements are excessively demanding, often requiring employees to be available 24/7 with minimal notice. This constant state of readiness means that employees are effectively "deemed to be working" for the entirety of their on-call shift, even when they are not actively responding to service calls. The ESA recognizes that such time should be considered work, as it restricts the employee's ability to use this time for personal purposes or engage in other employment.

The impact of this policy is profound. Employees are unable to secure secondary employment because their on-call obligations require them to be available at all times, severely limiting their economic opportunities. Furthermore, the unpredictable nature of the on-call schedule disrupts their personal lives, as they must remain within the service area and be ready to respond at a moment's notice. This not only infringes on their right to rest and recuperation but also creates significant stress and burnout.

Medigas' approach to on-call work fails to acknowledge the concept of "deemed work" as outlined in the ESA. The company does not adequately compensate employees for the time they are required to be available, nor does it provide appropriate rest periods or alternative arrangements to balance the demands of on-call duties. As a result, employees are left feeling overworked, undervalued, and unsupported.

In summary, Medigas' on-call policy is a clear violation of the ESA's standards for "deemed work." By requiring employees to be perpetually available without recognizing this as compensable work time, the company disregards the legal protections meant to ensure fair working conditions. This policy not only undermines employee well-being but also exposes Medigas to potential legal challenges for failing to adhere to the ESA. Significant changes are needed to bring the on-call system into compliance with the law and to foster a more supportive and sustainable work environment.

This job started with great potential. I was told I would receive a benefits package, there would be room for advancement, I felt like it was a great opportunity. That changed quick. 
My benefits package never came. Spoke with my manager and HR who both said they would look into it and then it’s coming soon, they eventually stopped responding to my inquiries which was another factor in my decision to move on. 
During my time here, more people quit that I can count on two hands. The workload piled up and we were told to just handle it. There is no way anyone could keep up but upper management does not care. We were so far behind and always asked why we couldn’t keep up, almost as if they thought we sat and did nothing all day. 
Procedures are constantly changing, one day you’re told to do things one way, the next it’s completely different and there is a lack of communication. You figure it out as you go and never, NEVER try to explain why you did something some way because it’s an excuse. 
Colleagues at other branches can be some of the nastiest people with zero repercussions to how they speak and treat you. Others are nice but there are a few who I’ve been told “will likely be in your decision to quit”
They are always changing systems which can be difficult to navigate through four platforms at a time. 
Upper management does not care, you are a number and they care about the dollar. Lower management tries their best but it’s not enough. 
You are constantly being pulled from one task to another, asked to look at things from colleagues and find information they should know themselves. 
It’s a cluster and not worth the headaches. I’m sure I could go on however if you work here you will find out for yourself. 

The colleagues at my branch were fantastic, I miss them. 

The typical day was spent delivering oxygen to various facilities, visiting clients, and fueling up the truck with liquid oxygen. 

It got very, very cold in the winter, but the coolness is enjoyable in the summer. You get the chance to work by yourself for the entire day, which can be very enjoyable, depending on who you are. 

There is very little time for slow-down, which can be very stressful when you are behind on reaching facilities. I was expected to do a run in 8 hours, but frequently ended up at 10. I felt that I was expected to go a lot faster than was possible, and this seemed to cause some tension on the management-end. 

There is a lot of training, which is good, and the other workers and staff were all extremely supportive and helpful. 

On-call does not mesh with your personal life, and is very, very difficult to find a good work-life balance. 

This is probably a great job for people who are single or want to make overtime pay, but not great for expecting a smooth and easy workday. I felt a lot of disconnect between what I was expected to do, and what I was actually capable of doing.

The hardest part of the job was getting to locations when the office was closed without any assistance. 

The easiest part was the driving (put on the radio, or listen to an audio-book).

The most enjoyable part were the clients, who were frequently very old and very happy to have someone visit and chat with. 

This job is for a particular type of person, probably in the trades. The help of clients with oxygen needs is a definite moral boost to being in this position.

Typical day of work was a massive work load with no help,  had to load the truck alone, call all the clients alone, then drive all around the city like a maniac just to try and get off on time. Get rewarded for finishing your deliveries early with more deliveries to do. Get called many times during on call, all hours of the night and still have to drive in the morning to do normal hours as well. Management was horrible, as soon as a client complains you’re pulled into the office and thrown under the bus even though you cleaned all the concentrators and stocked up supplies but it’s your word against theirs.

What have I learned? I definitely learned every street and route to get around the city and surrounding areas. Also learned that the benefits are not worth it, would rather have my money back, can’t opt out though.

The culture? Culture is making sure the company is profitable and maximizing profits on patients illness and death. 

Hardest part of the job is actually getting off on time at the end of the day. Too many deliveries and pick ups to make, not enough drivers to spread the work load.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the peace and solitude of being on the road by yourself. Except that sometimes your drive is sometimes 2.5 to 3 hours away one direction.

Only reason it gets 3 stars and not 0 is that it’s still a better job than making minimum wage. But barely, and very stressful. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
I was a temporary hire so I have no knowledge of the regular day to day activities. I was hired to help re-organize their back storage area, and then the pandemic hit and so I was let go early. No hard feelings, of course. But though my time was short, I did quite enjoy my work there.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
A lot of physical stress on your body as things like pneumatic bed frames and all their associated parts had to be loaded and unloaded routinely.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Seemed like a very friendly place. Again, I was only there as part of a temp contract, but everyone went out of their way to get to know me and chat me up in the breakroom and otherwise make me feel like part of the team.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I would clean any incoming medical equipment, and after being sanitized I'd stow them away. Then either test breathing equipment to make sure they were all functional or check in with my direct supervisor for any other work assignments.

The training was good and the RT stayed with me as I became comfortable with the computer programs and patient interactions. 
Unfortunately, the payment system is overly complicated when the receptionist is absent and the RT must handle the transactions.
The Laval office was very clean and well organized, but no window in the office, although the windows at the front of the store are visible with the office door open. 
The commission system is cryptic and the HR and management did not disclose how they calculate the quarterly commission when I requested it.
The quantity of calls and emails can be overwhelming and it did seem that the receptionist was overwhelmed, receiving orders from clients from other stores as well because they were not being responded to. Perhaps a better call system could prevent these calls for simple purchases from overflowing to the RT and hindering the RT from also responding to clinical questions from clients. 

The only good thing about working for medigas was the fact that you have no supervisor breathing down your neck and you are in charge of your own duties. Salary wasn't bad but not worth the work you'll be doing and the benefits are terrible. Don't expect a raise thats adequate for how much energy you will put in, years time it might be 30 cents. The policies that lindy implemented are brutal, policies to back policies only to protect the company compliance comes first, safety second, customer service third and so on. Don't believe anything managers say because realistically they have no idea either and will lie to keep you working. Don't give up a week of your life every month for 50$ to remain on call. Warehouse is terribly unorganized and management will look at you to fix it even though you won't be able because delivery takes up most of the week and you are on your own.

My typical day at Medigas is at the beginning of my shift, receiving delivery and pick up orders for medical equipment/oxygen that usually put me in overtime no matter how fast I go. I get timed orders which are impossible to make and most days I feel i am set up to fail. Business for Medigas is growing and although they acknowledge they are short-staffed, management refuses to do anything about it. What used to be a good place to work now has low morale due to tired and overworked employees. It usually takes 4 weeks for a new hire to get fully trained and be on their own. Once they are on their own they get bombarded with orders. Newly trained employees were quitting because they simply cannot handle the workload. If you are up for it, Medigas will give you all the overtime you want but if you are looking for work-life balance, this is not the place for you.

Little to no management, dispatcher trying to be a manager.  Company is all about Safety,  but never follows up with safety concerns.  A day as a delivery driver is usually delivering Hospitial beds by yourself, including up and down staircases on second floors of homes.
 (Supposed to be a 2 man job) 
You are constantly questioned by the dispatcher many times throughout your day as to when you will be back to the office to get more work. 
(Due to lack of enough drivers) you may only take your lunch break when there are no deliveries, if you do take a lunch it means you get home that much later in the evening. 
You will be placed on a  “on call “  every few weeks and will be answering phone calls most of the night after your 10-11 hour day as well as  possibly going out at any hour of the night for a 3 hour tour to repair old equipment. 

My review would have been very different about a year ago. When I started my manager was non-existent, I received zero training and basically had to figure it out for myself. I hated my life and was looking to jump ship. Some restructuring happened and my new manager is amazing. She has a ton on her plate but finds time to not only train, but figure out how you learn and grow best. If you are willing to learn, are coachable and willing to put in the work there is room for growth. Now I’m feeling very fulfilled and excited about work even though we are currently a bit short staffed and busy. 
The pay could be better but the benefits are pretty good. In my location we work really well as a team and get along amazing.
