Worked at Metro for almosy a year and frankly i really enjoyed it. Everyone in the meat department and other departments are really nice however some of the managers can be absolutely awful to deal with.  One of them just treats everyone with total disrespect and is constantly power hungry to the point where it actually just feels like bullying.

Unfortunately i got scheduled on my birthday this year and i had a family dinner planned at 8pm (Could not get the day off) So i made sure to do my clean and night tasks and after i was done everything i asked politely to leave so i wouldnt miss the dinner. Unfortunately i was given a no which i would have been upset about but just brushed it off because hey more hours more money however i guess she decided that wasnt enough so she decided to say to me "you know theres always an excuse with you." 

Now personally i would leave work early if i was done everything as i believe that theres no reason staying if everything is completed. At that point, im just wasting company time by sitting in a department doing nothing for 2 hours however, every time i have ever asked to leave early it wasnt for a outside of work reason or an excuse just a "Hey! I managed to finish everything early. Any chance i could head home?" And 25% of times it would be a sure why not and the rest a no but i respected that because they werent being rude and just being honest.

So after that happened i just went back to my department and to tell you the truth i was very angry. I believe that incident was where i decided "look i dont want to do this anymore" so i went to find work elsewhere.  This is not a uncommon occurrence with this manager unfortunately which made my decision to leave a little more justified.

If there was any time i got sick or couldnt make it into work and had to call in and she picked up, the disrespect was incredible. Still do not know how some people can have that much hatred in them. 

I personally really enjoyed my expierence at Metro though.  The co-workers really helped during those long boring shifts and we shared a lot of laughs together. Made some friends that will last me a lifetime and memories and confusing times that will pop up in my head every now and then. 95% of the managers at Metro are great and are supportive of your goals if you approach them, so i dont think its fair to say that management is awful as one sour fruit does not ruin the entire tree 

I also dont believe that it is fair for management to belittle lower ranked employees and customers just because they have the title of "Manager". Customer service is all about helping not only the customers to the best of your abilities even if there isnt anything you can do for them but also your fellow co workers that way you are able to create a friendly work environment and that goes a long way and helps earn respect between each other.

Those nights when the nice managers would close would be absolutely fantastic! They would lend a helping hand if need be and you would do the same out of the respect you had for them because they gave respect back to you. Thats what made my expierence at Metro great was the respect people showed each other at the store. 

I really did enjoy working at Metro during the time i was there but all good things come to an end eventually. Personally I would recommend working here. Some nights can be tough but others can be great and time just flies by.  The co workers are absolutely amazing once you get to know them and they're always up to something!  I wish nothing but the best for the staff and managers at Metro however i believe that there is more that could be done to boost work morale.

I worked at Metro cumulatively around 7 years. It was my first legitimate job at 15 when minimum wage was closer to $7/hr :) Had some great and not-so-great moments that are common to retail.

Pros:
-Have had experience in different departments, but only after leaving for school and returning for summer/on-going part-time work. 
-Definitely a fantastic place to learn humility and appreciation for others in this field when you are the customer!
-Would generally be ok with time off, if booked off minimum 1-3 months in advance and managers notified.
-Was always accepted back no matter how long I'd left.
-Met some great people and customers

Cons:
-you lose any seniority you gain the second you take a leave of absence. I was told in training doing so for school was accepted; this was not honoured. Lack of training in some departments, particularly after a transfer to be closer to school (never met anyone at that store beyond my first shift and expected I knew where everything/one was in the store :/).
-ALWAYS part-time, ALWAYS minimum wage. Never received a single increase in wage in the 7 years I worked there, beyond when it changed provincially (i.e. even with my two stints of 3 consecutive years). A friend of mine requested a merit raise after a similar working timeframe and was laughed off/suggested that the position was a "gift"/nothing was owed to them.
-different dept. experiences showed different mini-cultures within the store. Working at the Pharmacy was the best experience with a great, respectful team who treated you as an equal. Deli (albeit I was youngest at that time) was a culture of fear towards management; you did what you were told to and were chastised for occurrences beyond your control. Management outside of your department often blamed you for customer concerns that reflected actions you did not do --> lack of trust and support in employee, more in customer stories.
-long-term staff would generally get away with a lot more than younger staff (i.e. multiple smoke breaks outside of their unionized breaks, no-shows for shifts without consequence, punch in late, similar drama as noted in other's posts, power-struggles, etc.). If jobs weren't done at end of shift, newbies were blamed despite work meant to be shared.
-would max out on #hours allowed per union requirements --> store ran on part-time workers without benefits and wage capped at $14/hr (i.e. I know someone who's worked the same job for 15 years but part-time/never offered full-time...can't make more than that now legally).

All in all, great first-job experience and takes a chance on a lot of teens looking to break into the working world! So thank you for that opportunity. 

However ability to "live" working at Metro for a solid majority is impossible due to lack of advancement, surplus of part-time work with no benefits, consistent minimum wage, lack of any incentive for company loyalty (e.g. I worked briefly recently at the Superstore, which offered a discount card after 3 months, insurance discounts, shares in the company, etc.), being screwed over with pension (conveniently disappeared a few years ago and no help provided) and work culture (obviously differs on store).

It's a launching pad to other careers, which reflects in the lack of trust towards hiring full-time employees and treating part-time employees as replaceable.

When I applied, I didn't even ever speak to anyone and nobody saw my resume. They simply told me that I had the job and gave me an orientation packet. The manager was extremely rude to me during the orientation and insinuated that I was poor about 6 or 7 times despite me wearing fairly nice clothing. There was a woman who worked there that would yell at me for every single small thing, like ringing things in too slow even though I was working fairly quick for someone who just started. I never had a single positive experience with anyone who worked with me. They would steal my lunch and just throw it out while I was working and I always had to buy my food. And then when I started putting my food in my locker with my clothes, someone would have a manager cut the lock and the excuse was always that my lock was there for too long which made no sense since sometimes I was only scheduled for three hours. There was also one time when I called an hour in advance to say that I was going to be late and when I got there, I was treated extremely rudely the whole eight hour shift that I was there for. There were also several people on the management team who just completely forgot who I was even when I would come in 5 days a week for a month or something. Also, they were extremely inflexible with my schedule, not even caring that I was 16 and going to school, they would frequently schedule me to start at 1 pm or sometimes 11 am when I didn't even get off school until 3 pm. So for my opinion about the overall work environment, when it came to being yelled at for being too quiet to being told that I have a bad attitude when speaking up articulately about the way I was being treated, to being yelled at for not putting things on a shelf in a straight enough line. But then they didn't care when I would sometimes wear black sweatpants or jeans instead of wearing the black pants I was told to buy. They were very selective in what I was getting into trouble but there were several people who did a lot worse or even just did the same things as me and didn't get into trouble for anything. I'm almost done, but another thing is that whenever I would complain to the one manager who did like me at that store, she always told me that she didn't have time to talk to me or she told me essentially that my complaints weren't valid in any way. Lastly, I asked to be moved departments so that I would get a couple more shifts a week because I lived on my own due to emancipation, and after spending a week being trained somewhere else, I somehow managed to get fewer shifts than I was getting despite them telling me that the more departments I was trained in, the more shifts I would get.

A typical day at work in Metro Inc. begins with my usual style of prayer to God for help to achieve the tasks, unity among colleagues, peace/safety and profit for the organization. Every day meets with its challenges especially coping with multitasking. I worked in the Produce Dept but I have had cause to give customers a good shopping experience not just in my department but the entire store showing them where the item(s) required is/are displayed. I have very dedicated management staff who are very cooperative and willing to answer my questions and implement my suggestions. I enjoyed working with all my colleagues, however there are a few whose attitude I do not enjoy at all. Primarily their work ethics and commitment is not helping the organization. The hardest part of my job is when I have to lift heavy boxes to stack on racks and also working in the cool room for extensive period breaking down pallets of wares. The attendant pains after work hours are a concern for me. The most enjoyable part of my job is when I make suggestions as to price reductions in some over stocked items and management implements it. Also when I am scheduled with very hardworking colleagues and I see us achieving beyond expectations. I have learned a great deal about working with all kinds of individuals from diverse cultural settings and diverse attitudes some good and some not interesting but have to be tolerated for the progress of the organization. Work/ Corporate culture 
 and training on the job has brought proficiency to me to make an impact. I have adapted to all cultures in terms of what they eat and how they prepare a  few of their food. This has also enhanced  me eating right as I used this experience for my family menu.

A day at work would typically start with being assigned a few important tasks by my superiors which would not be apart of the usual routine ex. setting up a display for a certain product or event. Following the completion of this task I would then commence my daily routine: making sure that all the displays are properly filled with product and that the displays remain aesthetically pleasing. My other duties were to provide the customer with a great customer experience: being helpful in assisting the customers to find products or any other issues, and being well mannered and polite in dealing with the customer. Other duties I had were to make sure that the department was also clean and ready for customer service, including: cleaning spills, dusting off the displays, removing bad product, covering up the potatoes at the end of the night and sweeping the floor.

As this was my first job I learned quite a bit about what I'd experience in the workforce. One of the biggest things I've learned was being responsible and accountable for my department and work space and duties. Many times, my fellow co-workers would be working less than efficiently to say the least, and I would take initiative to manage and maintain the department's efficiency. However, this does not mean that I am not a team player- during my work experience there were numerous times where I would work alongside 3 or 4 coworkers in order to make sure our department was efficient and in good condition. We would also work together to maintain customer satisfaction such as assigning duties to one another when we were not available, sharing product information and helping customers find a coworker more familiar with a product or department.

Although the work was fast-paced and demanding, I was always content with the job that I had done and the responsibilities I was ascribed. The difficulty that I would feel at times would make my job feel more rewarding, even though the perks opportunities for advancement were not that great.

I learned allot from this business this is how I got into the cake business and started a passion for cake decorating. I improved my knowledge from hands on work and taking classes and watching videos to make sure I was the best at what I did, I wanted to make sure that when the customers left they left happy. 

I got to know regular customers and the things they liked, I could see them coming and have the stuff they needed ready for there arrival such as cutting there bread a certain way or having the product packaged, ladled and ready for them to take so there was no waiting period,


My Day at work all depended on what needed to be done. I was the main cake decorator, but I expanded my knowledge to knowing everything around my department so I new how to do it all. I found it very helpful because I new my way around the hole department if anyone needed something I new if I could get it done or not and when It would be done if I could, I pretty much ran the department with out the manger name.


My Manger and co-workers, where great, we came across some employees that didn't do there job to the full capacity that they were required to do, some stayed and some were let go. The ones that stayed was because we had no other help so those days were kind of rushed having to pick up there slack and do your own it was defiantly rushed and fast passed but we got threw it.

The hardest part of the job would have been the days that you had to open close and do cakes, it was very hard because you felt that you didn't have time to get everything done that you wanted to get done or needed. I would go home feeling unsatisfied about my job not fully done but at the same time you did what you could.

The most enjoyable part of my job was the customers appreciation when I would give them there order weather it was bread cakes or cookies, just the satisfaction of them being happy and satisfied with the product.

This grocery chain specializes in offering cheap, junky food, and take every measure to cut costs, and this core principle is similarly reflected in how employees are treated. All throughout my time with this company, because I was reliable, experienced, and hard-working, I was asked to do management level jobs, but was never  awarded a title (above 'clerk'). We were overworked and severely understaffed, especially during the hectic times of COVID, due to company policy (and NOT due to a shortage of available workers). The store management team was problematic in their decision making, but worse, they could not even over-rule the horrible choices foisted upon us from company representatives that do not live in our community (and only visit the store sporadically). The company gives only a superficial level of adherence to Health and Safety policy. The company invests endless amounts of money on loss prevention strategies which essentially accuse employees of stealing or otherwise causing 'shrink', when in fact the company itself is mostly responsible for losses, i.e. product destroyed due to careless shipping procedures, poor staff training for best practices in rotational merchandising, and understaffing problems which resulted in product not being regularly code-checked and/or moved efficiently from the backroom to the floor and out through the check-outs. I was expected to essentially run a department, but was constantly called upon to gather shopping buggies from the parking lot, again due to intentional staffing cut-backs directed by the company head-office. All of this results in a workplace culture wherein many fellow team members are usually grumbling about "how bad things are" and wishing that they could get work someplace else. As such, this company should be avoided unless you are desperate for income.             

A typical shift for myself would be around 4-6 hours long and be compromised of processing customer transactions, while keeping my area clean and organized.  I would normally get a 15 minute break, in which I could eat something quickly then return to finish my shift.

From working at Metro Inc., I have learned how to operate a cash register and work for long periods of time in a fast-paced work environment.  It has also taught me how to provide excellent customer service and learn to persevere through work, despite personal issues or other challenges.

I thought most of the management was amazing.  They were fair, kept an eye on ongoing operations and engaged with customers to increase their shopping experience.  I also found out that one manager in particular had really appreciated my contribution to Metro Inc. and let me know this, which made me feel great.

Most of my co-workers were very laid back, yet hardworking.  This made for a great work environment and allowed me to thrive as part of a strong team.

The hardest part of my job was memorizing the codes for every produce item in the store and being able to identify the item to which it belonged to.  If that doesn't sound hard, I'll let you know that we had 7 different types of eggplant alone, all with different codes.

By far the most enjoyable part of my job was being able to talk with people frequently, because if they were in a good mood we could have a nice chat about anything.  Or even if they weren't having the greatest day, I would do my best to cheer them up and finish my job efficiently, so as to leave them with a better state of mind.

A typical day at my previous workplace would include working with cash, handling debit and credit transactions, bagging grocery items for customers, and giving customer service help when needed. As well as learning to work in a fast-paced environment as a cashier, I was also trained in the Floral Department, where I would clean, water and care for the plants and flowers, provide customer's with information about them, as well as wrapping and arranging bouquets. The management at Metro was overall accommodating and professional, but I felt as though regulations and instructions would change often, and employee's were not always informed correctly, causing miscommunication in the workplace. I found the hardest part of my job had to do with the renovations that the Metro has undergone from October 2016 to around May 2017. It was difficult to work during this time due to the change in placement of items ( different aisles, sections moved, etc.), and due to the fact a lot more attentiveness and help  was needed for the customers to have a good experience at the store. The most enjoyable part of the job for me was the social aspect. There were many regular customers and new customers that I got to help and communicate with during my time at work, and I feel as though the social aspect of any job that involves customer service is important. Socializing with and acknowledging the business customers are providing your store with is a great way to create customer loyalty.

Would NOT recommend. Management is unprofessional, disorganized and seems to have no clue what is going on. There is no communication what so ever. I often walk into shifts to new information popping up overnight that is very vital to me doing my job correctly, with not a single word from management. Schedules often get posted with the wrong dates causing confusion. On occasion my pay has been late, and when I call to try and get an answer i'm met with attitude and no answer/explanation. Depending on store calls ins may or may not be a problem, at my store if i called in i got a call back from management telling me i need to come in. If i refuse, the call turns into borderline harassment.
The job itself is easy and i enjoy the customers, but we are constantly short staffed. Not because we don't have enough staff, but for some reason management does not schedule appropriately. We are often left without a self checkout attendant and one cashier for close... ONE. That person is now left to work the register, self checkout, clean for close, and the phones/desk if the desk person isn't available while doing their job.  
This all depends on the store and the management you get. But the lack of protection Metro has for its employees working the front lines during COVID-19 compared to other stores, should tell you something.
Metro is a great job that does give you the opportunity to meet some awesome customers, and make friends with co-workers. But at the risk of terrible management that makes it hard to withstand pulling your hair out at times..
