 I found the office or employees to have the following qualities, generally speaking:

Pragmatic.
Approachable.
They don't schedule pointless emails.
Your inbox isn't spammed.
Hands off approach to management.
Managers and supervisors were easy to talk to and available if needed.
Can be stuck in a certain way of doing things.

Compensation was reasonable, middle of the road.

Time away from work, at least in my case, was respected. 

Flexibility was there to work from home or take time off for appointments if not abused.

Generally in office presence was required.

Since being acquired by Englobe, then Colliers the culture is slowly changing. But that seems to be the general trend now.

If you are a young professional, you'll just be a working horse. Full of partiality based on the colour, low pay, good place to learn ON YOUR OWN. A typical day is tedious, with constant micromanagement and unrealistic expectations from leadership. Management shows little appreciation for hard work, and feedback is rarely constructive. The workplace culture is toxic, with favouritism and gossip commonplace, making collaboration difficult. The hardest part of the job is dealing with the lack of support from supervisors. There is very little to enjoy, except perhaps gaining experience in how NOT to run a company.

Wages do not met industry average, but they will compensate with group activities and sandwich lunch and learns. No wage increases for new roles or tasks within company. Long hours and heavy work load is common. Great atmosphere for hanging with the guys. Locker room talk is encouraged throughout the office. Family is key to MPE and a large group of managers are closely related or drinking buddies. Golf is key to succeeding here. A good golf swing is more important than hard work or project at hand. Office is always full of new people, but the office maintains same number of staff. 

MPE was a great place to work.  Professional yet relaxed environment to work.  I worked there for almost 10 years prior to 2014, so it is possible things have changed since my time there as they were growing quite a bit when I left.  I only left because I needed to focus on my family.  They do profit sharing and you get paid for overtime hours even when on salary.  I worked with some really great people there.  Some are still there and some have moved on elsewhere. I would recommend working here to anyone.  

MPE Engineering as a company is a great company to work for. the Management in the Calgary office however is not. The region manager is a very nice person but doesn't seem to have much experience in managing employees. The Executive Admin assisant seems to be the one who calls all the shots when it comes to staff. There are a lot of double standards with employees. Some can get away with pretty much anything (coming in late, long lunches, slacking off, etc..) and others get written up for the same things.

I joined MPE (now a division of Englobe) in 2025 and was pleasantly surprised by how collaborative the Calgary office is. Senior engineers and technologists are generous with knowledge, and you’re trusted to run with real client work early, so the learning curve is steep in a good way. Compensation is fair for the municipal consulting market, benefits kick in quickly, and the in-house safety culture is taken seriously.

MPE fosters a family friendly atmosphere, with plenty of opportunities to work on various different types of jobs. Training from the the different disciplines in Civil Engineering. Flexible hours and work locations. Like many other companies I have seen plenty of turnover, but it's never due to the atmosphere it provides.

Good company.  Extremely busy, my experience I had a hard nosed supervisor.  Found work/life balance was not very good.  Was always busy and often times working overtime.

Nice lunch room with game table.
Quiet work environment.
Work loads can be heavy.
Good social committee.
Not good with team work.
High on safety.

A typical day included site visits to ensure contractors are following the design. Report writing, proposal preparation, and Microsoft programs were used and done daily.
