Magellan Aerospace

Magellan is a good starter job to get experience and then move onto somewhere better. On the plus side, the coworkers were nice, the benefits (healthcare plan, pension contribution, vacation) are good, and there are a lot of specialty manufacturing processes under one roof (sheet metal forming, machining, welding, brazing, heat treatment, composites, NDI) which makes it a great place to get your feet wet.

On the downside, management is perpetually stuck in the past - it's an old boys club from the 1980s. Everyone got to their positions because they were yes men, not because they were actually good at their job.

The culture is nepotistic, they never fire any directors or managers, only move them around to other roles, and there is no leadership. They micromanage, treat budgets and raises as if it's coming out of their own pocket, and never want to spend any money on infrastructure, equipment or improvement.

Certain managers have a chip on their shoulder for anyone with a degree, and they talk down to you, downplay your performance and achievements, and disregard any requests for further education or post-secondary. Ironically the same managers think they are the all-knowing God of manufacturing and their way must be the correct way (even when the advice they are spouting goes against the customer drawing, engineering practices and quality requirements).

Other directors are in constant denial about why they cannot retain employees. It can't be that we are bad managers and offer below average pay - it must be that the employee was always going to leave anyway. The classic Winnipeg dilemma - they have champagne dreams on a beer budget. 

Overall it's not the worst place to work, but there are far better employers out there. Get your experience here for a year, then go to Boeing or StandardAero for more money. 

The organization was truly the perfect place to learn, grow, and gain valuable experience before moving on to the next stage of my career. From day one, I was surrounded by a supportive and knowledgeable team who were always willing to share their expertise and offer guidance when I needed it. The environment encouraged curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning, which helped me build a strong foundation and confidence in my abilities.
Beyond the professional development, what stood out most was the genuine sense of community. I had the privilege of working alongside a great group of people who made every day enjoyable. Their positivity, teamwork, and willingness to help one another created a workplace culture that was both motivating and memorable. I’m grateful not only for the skills I developed, but also for the meaningful relationships I formed along the way. I truly made lifelong friends here, and that is something I will always carry with me.

I would turn on the computer access the database sit down go through what need updating and adding to it while sipping a coffee this would go on for half an hour then I would start the actual work.

My Co-workers were all very nice and helpful!

This consisted of calling many different companies or visiting their website to email them to get updated info on said Document, this was also a lot of research into where these companies were.

The Most enjoyable part of this job when that I could sit there listening to my MP3 player while doing this work at my own pace( which was rather fast) 

The hardest parts of this job was going around the place to collect any data that was needed from new products, also the waiting around for the day to finish after I did a sizable amount of work quite fast!

Magellan Aerospace has a very interesting work environment where the knowledge of all is valued by management to drive continuous improvement. They have a very collaborative method of problem solving and this was underlined through the Quality Clinic that I had the opportunity to work in.

Management was open procuring new equipment to eliminate some of the more mundane and dangerous jobs that are currently completed by people. 

Training of personnel is undertaken as needed and is very inclusive.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Employee support is strong. Work very well together despite poor direction from senior management.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Poor support from senior management. Lack of long-term planning resulting in firefighting culture, hardnosed tactics and a lack of accountability.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Employee culture is collaborative and supportive. Senior management throw colleagues and direct reports under the bus. Verbal, public abuse during meetings.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long hours with no real sense of accomplishment.

No amount of pay is worth the belittling by certain department managers. Not always awful, kinda of depends where you go in the company. 
Favourites chosen within the company will have the staff bending over backwards to appease them. If you aren’t a favourite, good luck. Also, if ever you get offered a staff position, do not accept it. You are no longer in the union and likely are securing the fact that you will be let go in about one to two years later. 

Let go first week on the job as a PC admin for not getting along with trainer. PC room employees showing anti-social behaviour (swearing, yelling behind their desks, etc) yet ironically highly critical of new hire having frustrations while training. Take a look in the mirror! Said hi to everyone, introduced myself, said thank you, etc., and attempted to align myself with trainer and help with their responsibilities while they were training me. Instead she walked out on me the first chance she had. Thanks for nothing!

If you're a worker, they will abuse you so they don't have to deal with the others that will not do the work. No growth, uninvolved management that will tell you your paycheck is your motivation. Contract time every 3 years and surprise, they do not want to give you anything, I'm talking 0,0,0 for all 3 years. I was part of the last strike. It took place in a cow field and the union is in the company's back pocket. In a small town, people are simply stuck there.

Magellan Aerospace is a very fast-paced and at times stressful environment, however co-workers are extremely supportive of each other and there is a real feeling of teamwork and belonging. It is a great place to settle down for long-term employment, where you will form very close working relationships and be exposed to opportunities for advancement.

I have enjoyed my 10 years of service and challenges of my work performed at Magellan. Many times, I would miss the coffee breaks just to solve a problem because of the dedication and passion I possess. I worked well with fellow employees and enjoyed passing on my knowledge to them. We all make mistakes and it is important to help employees learn from their mistakes. Over the years, I have experienced the transition of computer accounting programs. I am so grateful for the many experiences I have learnt at Magellan.
