I joined this company excited to grow my career and initially had opportunities to expand into proposal and bid work, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, my experience deteriorated significantly over time due to inconsistent leadership, poor communication, and a lack of psychological safety. As responsibilities changed, reporting relationships became unclear, feedback became inconsistent, and I experienced intimidating management behaviour, including being yelled at during a work-related discussion. I also felt that personal information I had shared in confidence was later referenced in a professional context, which damaged my trust. The culture often rewarded loyalty over open communication, and I left feeling that my hard work and dedication were not matched with respect or support. While every employee's experience will differ, I would encourage prospective employees to carefully consider whether the leadership style and workplace culture align with the type of environment in which they can thrive.

Hired on as a laborer from another industry, completely green to this industry and female. First couple days everyone was helpful and welcoming. Most of my time was spent in the yard, had only gone out to a job site a couple times but some of the guys seemed to think I should know what to do with no/unclear direction. Mistakes were made, as is expected when learning. I did my best and no comment was made otherwise. Came in for shift after the weekend and was given a termination letter stating my performance wasn't meeting company standards. I asked questions as to what the reasons where they felt my performance wasn't meeting their expectations but no one bothered to answer. If my performance was failing, why did no one talk to me prior and let me know what the issue was so I could have corrected it instead of blindsiding me?! Absolute terrible way to treat someone, especially from a minority group who has a hard enough time in the workforce due to gender inequality! Will not recommend women to work for Raylec Power(Alberta) LP.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The feeling of being an important part of a "family" not just a number in a company.  The company offers employees shares, great benefits packages, flexible work hours and paid vacation.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Expectations from Directors/Corporate Managers are not clear.  The corporate managers do not support their talent and choose to eliminate them from the company rather than work with them.  The company talks progressive but does not act progressive.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Environment seems welcoming; however there are clicks and often good employees are left out of important discussions and meetings where they can offer great ideas.  Communication is lacking  and there is favoritism among leadership.  It's unfortunate because leadership gives employees a false sense of inclusion and value.

I find Mainroad to be a pretty good place to work with lots of variety and an opportunity to work in the different areas with different crews. The equipment is for the most part new and an effort is made to keep it up. The wages and benefits are not oil patch but they are competitive for the job. As well as there is always an opportunity for OT. The four day work week in the summer is really nice. They do tend to advance you along if you show the interest and drive and do supply training on your way along. As with any job there have been problems but once identified they are dealt with and followed up with changes to avoid repeating them. Since nothing is perfect I would give Mainroad 4 out of 5 and yes I would hire on again.

Mainroad being a highway maintenance company as a whole has a great safety culture and very inclusive to the workers involved. A typical day can change as every day could be something new. There are so many aspects of the business to learn with a great variety of skill sets to be had. Management is very respectful and willing to guide you in the right direction. The culture at Mainroad as a whole is very safety oriented, inclusive, respectful and enjoyable. Speaking for myself I do not really think there is an overly hard part of the job but if I was to pick one maybe dealing with an upset member of the general public but over time even that is not really a hard task to cope with. The most enjoyable part of this job for me is working with such a great variety of people with comradery for all, everyone here is willing to give a guiding hand and watch out for each other’s safety. 

They will tell you that it’s a great company and that you will be paid well, but all they need is heavy heavy Labour!!   You will work with staff that are 50+, because no one else wants to work with this company.
Get treated like a brainless labourer. 
No sick days, no benefits, no job security.
You will be paying BCGEU Union dues from day one, with nothing to show for it.  You will need to work 1972 hours before you are even considered for a permanent position, which is 12 months, but they don’t need you as permanent, just an auxiliary worker with no future.  Also, all new hires are only night shift, and you will have to work weekends.   You won’t get paid if you call in sick, because no sick days or benefits until you are permanent, after a year.

Stay away from Mainroad!!!

This place owns you and your time. Very little room for advancement and are unwilling to pay for good staff. It is a very toxic culture and place to work with lots of favouritism and poor training. Leadership is very weak and the upper management are out of touch with the daily crew needs and responsibilities. Anyone that disagrees with their agenda is quickly cast from the team. Anyone that offers alternative safer ways to work if it collided with management is also cast out. The red deer yard is by far the worst managed yard and worst to work or out of.  Would not recommend working here at all. The drama, elitism, favouritism, are not worth the headache. 

Leadership has their favorites as this is not a union job. Therefore you may have more experience, work harder then anyone else, put the time in such as overtime and be in general the best employee they have ever seen but because your not a friend or favorite you get tossed to the side as just another employee. This also goes for safety! You may be doing everything properly but one of their favorites does it wrong and it is overlooked. Moral at this company is very low as there is zero incentives and you pay for your own benefits and have a boot allowance once every 2 years. No safety bonus or any bonus of any kind. Pay is also not very good. Would not work for this company in any location as it is all the same. 

There are an have been many good people at Mainroad.  The management team is never around and out of touch with reality.  The head office is routinely empty during the week because the managers are “working” from home.  Individuals are not respected for their efforts and only the people willing to tow the company line are rewarded.  If you need a job to get you through until something better comes along go ahead and sign up.  The wages are decent and there are lots of hours during the winter.  Just don’t expect the company to be organized.  They couldn’t organize a party in a brothel.
