Maison Birks

working at Birks was fun at times because I was able to interact with my coworkers and create great memories with them. But Birks is a very old company and if you do not go out of your way to find yourself customers it will be a very hard time to make your sales goal. The pay isn’t that great. The commission isn’t either unless you’re selling their items. Other than that my day consisted of 10 hours of sitting around waiting around for people to come in. Most of the time the people that came in were customers of other employees that I’ve been there for over 30 years. in order to succeed you really have to go out of your way to find yourself clientele, make big sales, and be very business forward.

The location I was in was very slow. We’d have two hour gaps between clients a lot of the time. And everyone complains about the free Birks watch batteries that they need to be sent out to Montreal to be changed, and they get mad if the watch needs more work to be fixed and they’d need to pay for that.

The pay is not enough to live on, much less make use of the discount. Due to the low traffic, commission wasn’t a lot so I could barely cover bills. I tried to get a raise but they just ignored the request even though I was doing more work than what my job description specified.

Everyone I met from head office was very nice though and my managers were great.

The credibility for the store in Chinook location was questionable. Upper management's way of running the place was skeptic, and most of all lacked attentiveness on a daily basis. Some employees were a dear to work with, and were very supportive. However, the hardest part of the job was the management's unrealistic expectations for everybody's role. I enjoyed working for this company only because of the hands on experience with luxury goods, and services. There was opportunity to grow in the company, but because of how management was, I was reluctant on being committed to it.

I have been treated unfairly by the Store Director who hid behind the computer screen. She was not professional and did not handle confrontation. Store Director was in a relationship with one of the employees, and this was reported via work anonymous hotline. I don’t care who you’re in a relationship with but you are definitely not leadership material, there was too much favoritisms going on. Regional director was involved and somehow the Store Director found out who was involved, that’s a privacy breach and should have not been tolerated

What is the best part of working at the company?
My association with clients, problem solving, solutions, becoming orofgiciant with products.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I had a wonderful time working there if not for my disability now I feel I could still be there.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
In my opinion it was a great place to work!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stock take ie. inventory, cleaning all products, customer service.

Not much support from Human Resources.
Excellent colleague in DC. Best department to work in, but lowest salaries in the company. Great team spirit and social activities unique to the department.

In addition to sales responsibilities, working alongside management on the floor selling provides opportunities to observe different selling approaches and accelerate learning.

This is the cheapest company I ever worked in my life. The name seems well- known old brand. Working there, you feel that you are not important at all. They never treasure you and care about you. In 2019, (no COVID, allow company party) our department employees were all invited to the company’s Christmas party with our own pay after working time. I payed because I wanted to be sociable, but in my heart I was thinking merde.

Exciting work environment with opportunities to meet and importante with many different social spheres. Very technical knowledge required as well as strong leadership skills. Limited growth possibilities.

The company wasted quite a lot of time, money, and ressources into migrating into a system that makes everyone's job harder and more complicated. You will be underpaid, and bonus is non existant, and raise non existant. VPs does not last more than a year, so direction is all over the place. It is, however, a great place to learn and start your career.
