First, as a front desk cashier, I am responsible for giving brief and precise menu descriptions to customers in a clear and well-paced voice. I also need to consider the differences in dietary cultures, for example by making customers aware of dishes, which contain pork or allergens like nuts and caraway. The reason for me to mention that because I have a responsibility to respect customers’ diverse cultures and prevent health problems caused by allergies, including delivering correct information to the kitchen. Moreover, I am responsible for answering phone orders. 
   Then, During peak times, I play a server role as well.  I have to ensure work quality by getting each dish quickly and fairly onto a plate or into a container to each customer. As a full-time server, I work with a range of part-time co-workers in a day. Therefore, I have to apply different teamwork strategies to interact with them in order to keep our work efficient and maintain enthusiastic customer services. For example, when I am working with someone who is good at using a computer system to collect payments, I would focus primarily on the server role and dealing with customer issues. When I working with someone who is a new colleague and not familiar with tasks, I would take on a leadership role, implementing multitasking skills to coordinate tasks efficiently. Most importantly, I have to establish the right time to call more dishes in different situations, avoiding mistakes, which could cause food waste. For instance, during lunchtime, I have needed to call for new pans of dishes before half of the old dishes were gone. After dinnertime, I need to observe if more customers are coming to help me to make the decision. Finally, one hour before closing, I add cleaning and assisting in the kitchen to my tasks as well. Moreover, I am responsible for counting total cash at the end of the day and ensuring that two hundred dollars are left in the cash register. I also need to write a short and precise accounting report of the day’s profit for the employers.
 The most important challenge for me was putting myself under pressure to do my best. For example, in the beginning, I became nervous about answering customers’ questions or controlling portions when serving food. At first, of course, I made many mistakes, which resulted in strained body languages unqualified customer service. Therefore, to address these problems as quickly as I could, I tried to play customer and server role game with my friends to practice how to explain menu details and how to answer common questions with a smile and at a moderate and confidence volume. Besides, I requested for guidance on portion sizes of each choice from my bosses and observed the correct portions carefully so that I could practice at home. Luckily, due to this important practice, I gradually adapted to having a conversation with customers easily and getting dishes fairly and quickly from the second month of work the term.
Through nearly three months of’ excellent work experience, I learned many informative tips and strategies to complete tasks efficiently and build positive relationships with customers and colleagues. Furthermore, As a full-time worker, I always worked with several different part-time colleagues in a day, and I had to find the best way to work with them to enhance work efficiency.

A typical day at work consists of serving customers, refilling the fridge, and replacing the food in the steam table. If you were closing, your responsibilities were to sweep the floors, refill materials (such as utencils, straws, etc.), order replacement food through the microphone, wash the steam table, wipe the glass and countertops, and empty the garbage.

What I learned during my employment was how to deal with a variety of customers, as well as developing my work pace. I picked up the routine and work ethic quickly and stuck to it. 

The management wasn't what I thought it was going to be. The manager stood around yelling at people. We received 15min. breaks (one for a 4-6h shift, and two for anything over that) when we should have been receiving 30min. breaks. If you worked over 8h, you did not receive time and a half.

My co-workers were friendly and we worked as a team. The workplace was very family-oriented.

The hardest part of the job was if it was your turn to close that day. You had to do it alone and did not get paid for overtime if you worked half an hour or an hour after your written hours. The owner would serve food even after the mall closed which would push your cleaning time past your hours.

The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting and getting to know your co-workers.

A typical day working here was getting all the food prepared and placed out front and getting all the tools ready so that we're ready to serve anyone who wanted to eat. When a client has ordered, we built our guest's plates with the proper serving sizes, we offered them a drink, and we finally got to the cash so they could pay for their meal. Working here was really fun at times, but boring at other times. When it was near lunch and supper time, it was more enjoyable because the time went by faster. When we weren't serving anybody, the time felt as if it was frozen. Throughout this experience, I learned how to properly serve people, I learned how to work the cash, and I learned how to count money sort of quickly. The manager was really nice and took good care of the staff. The hardest part of the job was remembering what utensils went with which tray of food, and the easiest part of the job was handling the beverages. I most enjoyed talking and seeing new people from different places.

The company has a relatively relaxed management style, which can be a good fit for those who prefer a less structured and high-pressure work environment. Employees generally have the freedom to manage their own tasks without excessive micromanagement. The workload is quite manageable, and there’s usually no overwhelming pressure, which allows for a decent work-life balance.

However, one of the biggest downsides is the prevalence of workplace gossip. Office politics and rumors can sometimes create a toxic atmosphere, and unfortunately, the management does not seem to take any proactive steps to address this issue. The lack of intervention from leadership allows these negative dynamics to persist, which can affect team morale and collaboration.

Overall, if you’re looking for a job with a light workload and minimal stress from management, this could be a good place. But if you prefer a more structured and professionally managed environment, it might not be the best fit.

Manchu Wok is a company running as franchisor and operator of quick service restaurants with 133 stores across Canada and USA.

My job is to prepare ad-hoc business reports and data analysis, compile and analyze various reports in order to help building and maximizing sales.

I also need to monitor sales performance of renovated stores and summarize report for management review regularly.

My co-workers are all very helpful and friendly.  They treat each other as their family members.

The hardest part of my job is to understand all departments' function so as to help them out on request.

The most enjoyable part of the job is that I can learn from the experience when I participate various department works.  Thus, I can fully understand business development and direction of the company.

It is a fast paced working environment with many different kinds of people. Because of the location my ability to speak French helped me on a daily basis. Some days were harder than others because all of my co-workers spoke in mandarin when not serving customers, This made communication with them very difficult, I would say that not being able to make friends and talk easily with my co-workers was the hardest part of the job. I loved my customers and they made working at Manchu Wok very easy and fun.

Despite how I enjoyed serving customers for the most part, it's a somewhat high-risk, fast-paced environment. You're expected to multi-task quickly while still remaining both sanitary and friendly to customers. There's no time to nurse a burn if you get one, which does hinder performance. Management was encouraging enough, albeit a little stiff at times. It's a challenging job but making customers happy elevates the mood fairly easily. The most difficult part was appeasing unreasonable persons.

Manchu wok is a enjoyable place to work, I gain some experiences in managing the store and dealing with the employees and handle a difficult situation. The best part of the job is you meet new people and you gain some friends. I grew in this job, It taught me how to be balance managing your people. The hardest part of the job is to make sure you are being fair to everyone. Without hurting other peoples feelings.

My typical day at work as alright, nothing to hard or nothing to easy. I learned how to make Chinese food, I got along with my co-workers and my manager but only for work-related purposes. The hardest part of the job was trying to fit in with my co-workers because I was the only different guy, They all spoke Chinese which made it hard for me to understand them. The most enjoyable part of the day was serving the customers and giving them what they want.

It is a private food window which means there were many workers are manager's friends or relatives. Managers are picky for our young workers and always believes that order workers work harder, which is not always true.
