How busy the day is is largely based on customer traffic. Luckily even when the store is empty you can always chat with your fellow staff members, work on stock, review your product knowledge or generally clean the store. 

MBLL has numerous training programs covering a wide range of topics, including an ever improving Management development program. One particular gem of a program are the product education courses that give staff two opportunities to greatly expand what they know about Wine and Spirits from across the world. 

Management can be a bit of mixed bag with some managers being a little more hand on and others being rather hands off to outright absent. To their credit the upper management and executives are rather friendly and down to earth.

The workplace culture is present, including a list of core values, but unfortunately not really pushed into the minds of staff, myself included, but that is a systemic problem across the company and something that is being working on at all levels.

Overall the company has been quite good to me. I feel adequately compensated for the work I do, my work life balance is great, the benefits are fine, and there are usually a number of advancement opportunities across a variety of fields such as Security, IT and Management.

The workplace itself is great, my coworkers are fantastic, approachable supervisors, welcoming atmosphere.  However, there are many days where you come into work expecting to work the full 8 hour shift that you are scheduled for and the roster has been changed and you're cut to 3 or 4 hours without any prior notice.  This happens regularly so even though as a part time employee you may be scheduled to work every day based on your own availability, it rarely happens that you would actually work full shifts.  Most of the job posting show all of the benefits such as paid time off, pension plan, dental, etc.  But if you are a part time employee you are not eligible for any of those things until you have worked 2000 hours which is basically the equivalent of a year of full time hours.  It would likely take a part time employee in the stores or at the warehouse 2-3 years to accumulate enough hours to become eligilble.  It would be good to know this before starting there under the assumption based on the job posting that all of these things are available to you.  Also, at the warehouse there is a lay off period in January that lasts until April which has not always been made clear to new employees when they are hired.  

This was hands-down one of the worst professional experiences of my career. Working as an HR Manager here was an exercise in constant frustration, moral compromise, and burnout. Leadership has no respect for HR, employees, or basic ethical standards. The role exists purely to protect management, not people.

Executives routinely ignored labor laws, company policies, and common sense. When HR raised legitimate concerns, we were silenced, overruled, or pressured to “make it work” regardless of legality or fairness. Favoritism and retaliation were obvious and unchecked.

The workload was crushing, expectations were unrealistic, and support was nonexistent. Despite the title, there was zero real authority—just endless blame when things inevitably went wrong. Turnover was high for a reason, and management showed no interest in fixing the root problems.

This company loves to talk about “culture” and “values,” but those words are nothing more than marketing fluff. If you care about ethics, employee wellbeing, or your own sanity, stay far away.


I've worked at Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries for several years and have observed both positive and negative aspects of the organization. Personal and work growth are particularly slow in the department I'm in. It took me almost two years to move from casual to part-time, and another 2 years to become full-time (I really can't remember when I got the full time offer 'coz it's been too long so I might be wrong but still before I get the part time offer it took me a long time)

Don't get me wrong, it's a fun workplace with very good benefits. However, advancing to management can take you up to 20 years probably due to the seniority system. If you're not exceptionally smart or strategic, you might stay in your department and be in the same position for the rest of your career until retirement.

There's a lot of power tripping in my department, and have experienced this first hand when I was new, and if you're not careful with how you interact with others, you risk being isolated. 

Despite these challenges, I've had fun working here because I love the work that I'm doing, even if I don't always love the people I work with.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Was able to work remotely and worked with great co-workers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Middle and Senior Management are very disorganized and put their own interests and the interests of their friends over the interests of the company.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful because people get fired at the drop of a hat based on rumors.  (This did not happen to me, but I saw it happen to several co-workers). There is no effort to investigate if the rumor is true.  Staff are best served by keeping quite and not standing-out from the pack.  If you like to work hard and challenge yourself, this is a bad place to be.  If you are one to do the bare minimum and just keep your head down, you may like it here.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Client meetings, staff meetings, doing desk work.

1 - Fast paced from the word GO!  Customer concerns; staff concerns; scheduling of staff; evaluations; financial reports; inventory; machine maintenance (ATM's, Ticket Redemption Machines, money counting machines etc.); balancing of the main vault.  Never a dull moment!
2 - Learned to manage, supervise, evaluate staff properly.  How to continuously motivate myself and my staff, gained knowledge in providing exemplary customer service to guests and other departments withing MBLL.  
3 - Workplace culture - Safety and Health; Respectful Workplace; Customer Service etiquette, diversity, teamwork within departments
4 - 24 hr. rotational shift work
5 - My staff and the exciting atmosphere were the most enjoyable parts of my job as Shift Manager!

Enjoyed working at MLLC.
Great working environment. Interacting with customers as well as the staff of MLLC.
I also facilitated Customer Service Standards Training.
My last position at MLLC was as a Corporate Security Ambassador. This job involved working as a host  to MLLC head Offices as well as providing a Security and Customer service presence at Corporate sites.
Also worked in Security at the Casinos as a Security Officer as well as a Security Supervisor.
This entailed inter acting with customers of the Casinos as well as counselling guests re: gambling and would refer guests seeking additional gambling information and help to The Addiction Counsellers on site for professional help.

As service desk,  I worked 8 hours a day. The duties which I regularly performed includes detecting, recording, classifying, routing, prioritizing, matching, resolving and closing incoming IT related support calls as possible, automated system alerts, service requests, and capital project requests.
 
Overall, my work term  as Service Desk in Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries has been a valuable learning experience. My job duties developed my interpersonal skills, decision-making and technical skills. There may be challenges in this job but it takes patience, flexibility and humility – knows how to accept negative feedback in order to fulfill the duties satisfactorily without conflict.

The most enjoyable part of the job is when interacting with end users and resolving their technical or non-technical issues as possible.

You get to get along with mostly everyone because they are very friendly at club regent casino. Diverse Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries company. The management is always there for you when you need. When it gets busy it can be stressful but it keeps the time going faster. I enjoy meeting new people, and making new friends here. I recommend working for Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries. Flexible Hours but sometimes not enough hours for a big cheque via direct deposit

A typical day at a Liquor Mart obviously has it's ups and downs. There are hard situations to deal with; from having to refuse a customer to checking I.D. on a daily basis, but these hard situations don't come without their rewards. The MBLL prides itself on it's social responsibility, and we as employees are the front-line protection for underage or intoxicated customers. 
The management system is hierarchical, and seniority/longevity is how hours and salary are determined; but if you're willing to put in the time with a company like this, you'll be greatly rewarded, not only in the unionized atmosphere but also in the employee incentive programs.
