I am grateful to have the opportunity to be employed by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. In a way they've put Toronto on the map with their marketing of "We The North". The passion they put into Toronto's teams is endless and pure dedication, which I absolutely love. 

They're more than just sports, they're also dedicated to reaching out to communities in need. Management and executives are always finding ways to get all employees involved in community projects, fundraisers and setting up camps. I've certainly learned to be more outgoing, hands on and involved.

My co-workers are some of the best people I have met, they make the more difficult days worth it as we have the "we are one team" mentality. Including management, you usually don't see corporate companies with management that are leading by example and aren't absent managers. 

A typical day for me - there is no typical day. I have certain routines that are to be completed in the morning portion of my shifts. And then my afternoon is spent completed more routines. In between that I spend my time helping others, completing miscellaneous tasks as needed and providing supervision for our front of house staff. 

The hardest part is with it being a larger corporate company, I would have to say it's harder to meet new people outside of your department and with people staying in their positions for long lengths of time - it's more difficult to advance or be considered for promotions. But overall, it's a great company.

you will face hostile co workers fighting for the top spot in the scheduling of hours and the management will require you to take whatever shift they offer and demand you meet all their requirements while being incredibly quick to punish and belittle workers for small cash errors while favoring employees that are high in the seniority listing. Be prepared to be fired or reprimanded, There are tips that bump up your salary and the pay per hour is good however there are union dues taken off every shift you work and shifts are short and the scheduling is unpredictable. During busy times you are expected to work back to back events and then from May to September you will be lucky to get 1 or 2 shifts a week.very few actual perks and conditions can be brutally hot or cold if you happen to be in a small concession near the kitchen or working any event in the fall and winter at outdoor venues. You may get the fun of being at a game or concert but rarely will you be able to actually experience or see any of these cool things due to being at your concession...enjoy your free hotdog per shift!

working for maple leaf sports & entertainment was the best job i have ever had. everything is almost perfect with this job except for one thing which was all year round work. management was great, really nice and friendly , made sure the employees stayed positive at all times in a non aggressive way, felt very genuine. the employees are fantastic as well, they only hired positive people and you can really tell from the staff that they want to have just as much fun as actual fans that come down there to watch the games, concerts, etc. the pay was decent, and you receive tips. ive learned how to give world class service from here because you met many people from around the world that you needed a mindset to attract every kind of person. the ONLY problem in this job was in the summer, when neither raptors or leafs were playing during off season, there was minimal work and unless you have a high seniority , you dont always get all the shifts available, but if thats not a problem for you then this is the best job you can get.

Minimal training. You get bounced around constantly into New booths with new teams.  Hard to learn menus and procedures when every booth is different.  
You"sign up" for a certain amount of shifts- but just because you sign up doesn't mean you work.  Then you don't get confirmation of shifts until sometimes the day before.  It's impossible to juggle kids sports, family life and another job PLUS this one... because there's not even close to enough hours to make this your FT gig. 
I DID like being there during games and Concerts.. but you hear more than you see.  The supervisor team had a few greats- but many were unwelcoming and unhelpful in helping you figure out what to do or even giving the basics of the booth

If better training- MUCH BETTER training-was implemented it might be a more enjoyable role. I thought I'd be proud to work here and was excited to join MLSE- 

A typical day at Team Shops usually begins at 5:30pm, I go down to the cash office and gather the event float for that evening. The staff are given a 5 minute information session about what is new, what is on sale, and any other information we may require throughout the night. In this environment I have learned how to work quickly and efficiently while still building a relationship with customers. Management is sometimes seldom seen or need to be contacted by phone to deal with a specific problem or answer a question. The co-workers are great to work with, everybody seems friendly and does their best to help each other out in the store. The hardest part of this job would be the hours and arriving home very late while being required to get up early the next morning for volunteering or school. The enjoyable part about this job is the relationships I have built with co-workers and some customers who repeatedly enter the store and deal with myself.

If you now start the job and even within the first few years you're at the bottom of the senority chain. Senior workers can and will take a shift you've already booked without your knowledge or consent because of their senority and you can end up with 0 hours for the week and management just shrugs their shoulders and say "that's the way it is for you guys". While they get salaries. You can have no shifts booked and have plans for yourself or school obligations and then management will hound you to take on shifts that you never even scheduled and if even when they know you're a student and have obligations they just don't care and will penalize you and gossip about you not being a "team player". It's a horrible place to work. No advancement for anything! No growth! Not a successful work environment at all.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Extremely high-pressure, “sink or swim” work environment with limited guidance or support for newer team members. There can be a strong sense of internal competition within departments, with office politics sometimes influencing access to projects and opportunities. Team culture felt cliquey at times, and workplace gossip was fairly common. Overall, it often seemed like employees were expected to figure things out on their own without the resources needed to succeed.

Pros: Recognizable brand name and strong resume value.
Cons: Work culture, support structure, and overall employee experience.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Horrible, high pressure, no support

The IT team suffers from a lack of strong middle management and leadership.  There is an insufficient headcount to support the infrastructure and number of employees, so days are constantly spent patching problems rather then dealing with the root cause.  The communication between the individual teams within the IT department is poor causing the team to function as silos rather then a cohesive productive group.  This all results in stressful toxic environment.  The most enjoyable part of working with the company were the employees outside of the IT group.  They are a group driven to 1 common goal which can be demonstrated by the continued success of the organization.

Worked here a year before the pandemic and during the pandemic they left us out in the cold after promising all staff they would cover us. The on site staff is usually a pleasure to work with and are a pro to everyday. The management not so much. The pay is a joke compared to the heavy responsibility required. After a while a lot of my coworkers were planning to leave just based on the mental load the job and once the pandemic hit that was their cue to exit. Was a cool experience at times but not a environment or company I would want to grow in long term. The return for effort is just not weighing up. 

Working in operations at MLSE is demanding. You must have a desire to wear many hats and shift gears instantly.  There is constant change and a very busy event schedule.  You should be the type of person and employee that thrives on excitement, and be an adrenaline junkie.  If you enjoy working in sports and entertainment for an organization that truly is top notch, you will find your home here.  This organization is not for the person who is looking for 9-5, event days are long and there are many of them.  You will need to prioritize your schedule and work commitments in order to sustain work-life balance.
