I started off at massage heights and was very happy with my job, eventually that happiness changed into misery. The atmosphere between retreats and the staff within these retreats is amazing. The location l worked for was very welcoming and warm, all staff was hard working and collectively made an effort to help with the smooth functioning of our office. Regional management is where the massive problem is.. All managers for individual retreats are expected to micro manage the therapists and front desk staff. Upon being hired, they are supposed to tell you that the focus on sales is very minor, which is highly untrue. If a receptionist doesn't have a certain membership sales percentage, they are responsible for going through extensive training which usually does not solve the issue. the focus SHOULD be on individual trainings for therapists that hold the business together, but the MTs are often disregarded of their opinions and needs. The regional team will often pick favorites and do not pay attention to anyone else who has a difference of opinion. Massage Heights claims to be transparent with their staff and all the bonuses and contests they have but that is definitely not the case.. If you are a massage therapist that is looking to gain experience, it can be a good place to start and build on skills. If you are looking for admin experience, this is not the place to be, they will hound you on sales and tell you that you can potentially make $18.00 an hour. That is a major lie!!
The regional team has become a NIGHTMARE to deal with and often play the blame game, the blame often being put on the managers of each individual retreats. This would be an awesome business to work for if they listened to what their staff needs.. A successful business has two aspects, one being that their guests/ customers are happy, the other aspect being that their staff is also happy. At Massage Heights, they ONLY focus on guest experience.

This is both a sales position and a receptionist one. You receive four days of training at head office but after that, a lot of what you learn and how well will depend on you and the location you are working at. It is a lot of memorization and pressure, but came with working with amazing MTs and learning so much! Also helping customers in pain and helping fill up the schedule was really fun and rewarding. I felt like I was a positive part of people's lives most of the time.

The managers and company very much only care about revenue and will not have your back if a customer is rude to you. A lot of the problems stem from lack of communication of what is right and wrong, protocol, and the manager not doing their jobs. The manager was more concerned about people not meeting their sales quotas than following up on important customer issues. There was also clear favoritism, and double standards. 

While the MTs and other LCs were incredible, the manager was the reason why I left. They need more training on how to properly communicate with staff, time manage for their own tasks, have more empathy, and simply put - talking and treating their employees like employees and not customers. 

a typical day at work consisted of opening the store, checking the till balance is still at 200. Then the lights music get turned on. Set up the files for the massage therapists. Then as guests come in for their massage you must speak with them and get an idea of what their needs are and how we can best help them feel better. 
collect all payments of services rendered. as new guest come in for their massage you must attempt find out if the guest is interested in coming for massage more regularly then attempt to make a membership sale.

 Then you must do call calls to confirm appointments for the next day. make next day, 3 month, and 6 month call backs to guests who haven't booked back in and check how the massage experience was for them.

 Then you hand make all receipts for the next day and pull all files as well. you file all files from the current day as the day goes on. 

 What I learned was how to work on my own even when it is busy and still get everything finished and done properly. my co-workers were amazing and work hard but there simply was not enough staff to get everything done in time and still make enough sales and focus enough energy on clients needs. I would say that is the hardest part of the job is fighting for more support from the company.

 the best part of the job was the fact you get to meet a lot of nice people and form friendships with your guests, all while helping them lead a more healthy lifestyle.

Great place to work if you like being busy. Flexible hours, great team, you choose how many massages you want to do in a day, clients are booked for you without you needing to find your own clientele, and you can be hired after your 1st year of massage school. 

Commission for massages at the beginning is $12.50/30 minute $25/60 min, $37.50/90 min $50/2 hours. 

Downfalls- 
-if you do not have an appointment then you make an hourly rate, which is minimum wage. The company pays you the higher of the two-your commissions from massaging, OR your hourly rate for the amount of hours you worked. Ex: If you work a 7 hour shift, but you only have two 1 hour massages ($50 in commission), then you only get paid your minimum hourly rate, because it is more than you made in commission for the 2 massages you did.. $10.20 x7 hours=$71.40. Although rare that you only have 2 massages in your day, it does happen from time to time. 
-Clients can not show up for their appointment 3 times before they get charged. If they don't show up, or if they cancel last minute, you don't get paid the commission.

Added bonus's-
If a client requests you as a therapist you get an additional $3 added to your commission, hot stones-additional $5, foot scrub and cold stone face massage-add $3 for each

This place is a gong show from start to finish. It is not a desk job it is a sales job. They pressure you to talk to people in pain about programs and to go over your head to make sure they sign up. The programs are cheap and convenient but can be lots of pain and they still use paper files so everything gets lost. None of the procedures of handling cancellations are the same region wide and everyone does everything differently so when guests go to different retreats for 'convenience' it can get messy for staff. RMT's are nice and very knowledgeable. They struggle with laundry though so get ready to learn. Regional Management is where everything makes you want to pull your hair out. They find any and every reason to sit you down and call you out passively saying they 'want to do everything they can to support you' and 'what can we do to make sure this doesn't happen again?' when they really want to say 'I am saying this once so I don't have to say it again, do you hear me?'. They treat their Retreat Directors like dogs. Every issue that happens in the retreat boils down to why the Retreat Director made the decision they did. Frankly none of the Regional staff know how treat human beings let alone their employees. If you feel comfortable working in deep water this is the job for you!

I have worked for Massage Heights for a couple months, and it has been awful. I'm usually the type of person who will stay at their job for years, but this one doesn't make the cut.
Management is less than mediocre - they always leave the retreat early, nor do they work at the front desk with their associates like they are supposed to. If a confliction arises, they are always quick to judge and do not always ask both stories beforehand.
There is literally ZERO opportunity to move up within the company, especially because they don't really have any new retreats opening up and anyone moving in to new positions.
The pay is awful. $13/hour. You are a receptionist AND a sales associate, not including all of the other tasks that you need to do during your shift. They do however give hourly bonuses if your retreat has a high appointment booking percentage, but it is extremely unfair that it is not based on performance.
Your hours are also not guaranteed. Even if you were hired as a full-time associate, it will be less than 30 hrs/week
They do not do performance reviews or raises, which is definitely a must if they want to see any staff retention.

Pretty awful. I worked there for 7 shifts. The manager was nice enough, but the other girls working there were the absolute worst. They were judgemental af! The moment the clients are out of the lobby they pick them apart talking about how much they hate them. They were more involved in texting, looking up Facebook (and trying to find the clients on Facebook as well) and finding recipes then answering the phones. They constantly let them ring and don’t answer. At one point they had an our long conversation about nails and didn’t speak to me once. (Even though I was training)
During a 3 day intensive in class learning they expect you to memorize almost 60 pages verbatim. There were 8 women in my class and almost all of them said they cried more than once at home about how stressful this was. They expect a full 8 hours in class and send you home with 4+ hours of nightly homework. Unacceptable. 
After waiting to hear about my schedule, I finally received a call saying “I didn’t fit and was being let go because I’m still in my probation period.”
I honestly didn’t want to go back, and you shouldn’t want to go in general.

I was hired on with Massage Heights in Sherwood Park between my first and second year of schooling with Makami College, first to complete 80 hours of practical training with the company and hired on as a paid employee immediately following.  
I found the company to be fairly fast paced booking as many as 5 clients per shift back to back for 50 minute treatments.
In my time with them as a therapist, I was exposed to many different types of clients with varied wants and needs from their therapist, whether it was a relaxation massage to help reduce stress to MVA clients as well as clients with various soft tissue injuries that I had assessed and formed a treatment plan for them according to their specific needs.

I enjoyed helping my clients relieve pain over the course of sessions with me and building a rapport with them in doing so.
I take great pride in the fact that over 90% of my clientele were return clients who felt their treatments were helping them greatly achieve the goals that we set out for them..

Was a new therapist working while still finishing second year at school. Did a hands on interview which was good enough to get the job. Worked for nearly 3 months and did probably around 60 massages without hearing a single complaint. Then on the day before my 3 month probation was over they told me that I had multiple complaints about my pressure and then fired me. I was never told even once about any guest complaints, ever. I couldn’t believe it. How am I supposed to fix something if I don’t know it’s broken? Absolutely ridiculous and they trampled my confidence at the beginning of my new career. The pay is the worst in the industry hands down, the management is also absolutely terrible, none of the managers have any massage therapy background whatsoever. I was then asked to return the following day and hand my shirt and holster in, but there was no way i was going back there without losing it on them so I kept it. They took off over $100 from my final cheque for the $10 shirt thats made out of sandpaper and a cheap $5 pouch. Hands down the worst experience I have ever had in any job. Avoid working here, you will be severely let down.

The management is disorganized, biased, and don't know how to resolve conflict. The team leads have no real qualifications or experience with human resource skills, if someone doesn't like you - regardless of your personal performance, client feedback you'll be fired with no opportunity for conflict resolution or process. 

One of the team leads seems to have a bias with race and gender and will overstep the boundaries of professionalism when he is speaking to you. 

The pay is not impressive when weighed against industry standards and therapists are also charged with laundry duty in most locations, which breeds stress and bickering between team members. 


To accommodate their massages marketed as one hour, clients actually receive 50 mins, so that they can book in as many clients as possible. Some clients don't mind, others do and find it misleading. 

The only location I would recommend is on 4th Street where the team seems at ease, they have laundry service, and the team leaders actually care about their staff.
