What is the best part of working at the company?
I loved the Rotation is 6 weeks working X 6 weeks at home. Navigating the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes offers stunning landscapes, and since the route stays close to shore, a cell phone signal is almost always available. The food is excellent, and there is a reliable supply of overalls, winter jackets, cold-weather gear, and safety equipment.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
"Working under a manager who views employees as mere numbers or tools, rather than as people, is disheartening. The 6-hour on, 6-hour off watchkeeping shifts quickly take their toll, leaving you completely exhausted after just a couple of weeks. And don’t even think about proposing a change to the working hours system—it could cost you your head."

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's not a peaceful place to work. You feel stressed and evaluated all the time.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You wake up and get ready as fast as possible, quickly grabbing a meal before starting your six-hour watch—whether it’s loading, unloading, or sailing. After your watch, you eat again as fast as you can to avoid losing sleep. Then, you go to bed for your supposed "six hours" of rest, which in reality become just five—since you spend 30 minutes eating and falling asleep, and another 30 minutes waking up, getting ready, and eating before taking your next watch. Now, repeat that cycle for a month and a half !

The management at McAsphalt Marine Transportation Ltd (MMTL) is very unprofessional. They are extremely untrustworthy and are known to make false promises, as was the case in my employment. There is no communication and the management is quick to identify an employee at fault rather than seeking corrective measures. Safety standards are extremely poor and employees are expected to work without proper safety equipment, despite employee requests for improvement. Specifically, the Division Manager at MMTL has no leadership values and continuously lies to the employees. Micromanagement has a great negative impact on the working conditions and creates a hostile working environment. Despite the company’s vision of a creating a safe work place, they are far from achieving this level due to lack of acknowledgment and spending on essential requirements. The work-life balance is non-existent as management expects the employees to work long hours with little to no compensation in return. Management continuously makes promises that are never delivered. 
I would not recommend this company. Employee retention has been problematic for this company and I have personally experienced the reasons for their revolving door. 
If, for whatever reason, you decide to work here, I would recommend that all communications be documented on paper/emails. 

Asphalt paving is a seasonal job, so that the peak season is in Spring, Summer and beginning of Fall. Operators are crazy busy. Shifts are morning, evening or night including weekends. Power Engineers would be responsible for boiler safe, so they take turns to look after the heaters and boilers. In the low season, life is way easier. Maintenance projects are scheduled. 

Tons of merits, such as good teammates. Most of them are nice and reliable. Facility manager (Plant manager) is supportive. OT in the busy season, good benefits, lunch time is paid, power engineer training fees are reimbursed, good PPE...

Demerits are also obvious, mainly from upper management. I don't like their micro-management without documented SOP or training of learning SOP. Business needing more integrity is another aspect. Different functions are not very co-operative. Workflows and accountabilities are not outlined, so that qualities of jobs depend on employees' initiatives and diligence. Waste are widely existed, but no incentives to encourage employees to improve much. Last but not least, some pay rate, working schedules, working hours, career development issues caused turnover rate significantly high. The seasonal is a possible reason, indeed.

Overall, it is a good company but with some issues  to be resolved.

You work your butt off for the first 2 years slugging boxes on an assembly line, 12 hour, continental shifts, then you move around wherever they want you. I learned a lot about the process and about asphalt in general, not that it's all that interesting. The management was not great, could have been worse for sure, but they needed their numbers no matter the working conditions. Speaking of, its really hot, and equipment breaks all the time and you end up taking on a second job just fixing everything. Work culture is awful, people talking about other people behind their backs, old guys who have been there 10+ years are insufferable. You don't have a choice who you work with either. I wasn't all terrible, there are definitely some cool people as well. The hardest part of the job sometimes was just looking busy during day shift because sometimes you are just waiting on something to do. However on night shift you basically get to chill out when there's nothing to do, so there's that. Overall not great but if you enjoy blue collar work it could be a lot worse. And there's definitely room to grow if you put in the work.

Typical work day consists of two or three people knowing what's going on and everyone else knowing nothing because the turnover rate is way too high. What I learned while working here is when the manager asks you to do something check with the senior guys first before proceeding with the job. The work culture was great everyone got along for the most part. Friendly jokes all around. The hardest part of the job is dealing with an old out of touch manager when it comes to anything HR related and being Unprofessional when it comes to  the indigenous culture. The most enjoyable part of the job was the people you work with side by side every day. If it wasnt for that I wouldn't have lasted so long there. 

I spent just under 3 years at mcasphalt working through 2 full seasons and it wasn't a bad job other than the hazards and semi-extreme physical laboring tasks still my overall experience was pleasant. The staff were all very helpful and polite every year on your birthday they would purchase cupcakes for the warehouse and the christmas party at the end of the year was excellent not to mention the christmas bonus. All in all I would recommend that anyone who isn't afraid of a little hard and dirty work should send them a resume they usually hire am around springtime.

This is a place that is handicapped by the upper management. Good bunch of guys that try their best, manager is a good guy who does his best as well but it is all for naught as the facility is kneecapped at every turn by upper management playing favorites. Typical day at work would be transloading railcars and super-B's, making product, fixing things that break. If you are a shift engineer you would do your boiler and heater rounds including start up and shutdown. Wintertime tasks would be tank cleaning and overhauls of pumps and mixers.

Friendly environment. If you have work related knowledge then its good place to work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nothing. If you know your work properly then there is not problem at all.

Everyone is doing their work, Good friendly environment, I like it very much.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Basically they give you 2 days work from home. I don't think any day is problematic.

Day to day changes but on average we load trucks unload trucks general upkeep and maintenance as well as house keeping. I have taken many courses and have kept them current while employed there. Management works for you as best they can. co works are all great make a great team and good time at work. hardest part of my job is not knowing if it will be available next year with the changing market and season and not getting the advancement I was told I would get. the most enjoyable part is the people I work with and how we all get along
