During the summer, McCarthy's is a fast-paced environment as students need to prepare for the upcoming school year. I started working as a sales associate about 5 years ago when I was 16, and since then, I have gained valuable life skills and knowledge. There's always room for advancement and career growth at McCarthy's, where different roles allow you to add to your list of experiences and qualities. 

Exceptional customer service is vital at McCarthy as it taught me patience, understanding, and practical communication skills when assisting customers. Another important skill I learned was collaborating and working as a team with my coworkers, which encouraged me to seek guidance and help others. Management is committed to employee development and has created a safe and supportive environment where mistakes are addressed constructively. 

Dealing with a fast-paced environment, especially during peak seasons, posed some challenges. Helping diverse families often means time efficiency while ensuring each customer receives attentive and helpful service; this taught me to multitask and delegate between assigned tasks while maintaining customer satisfaction.

If you're looking for a fun summer job that can help you enhance your skills and attributes while working in a supportive community, I recommend working at McCarthy's. 



This is a great seasonal job, but once you are a full time employee/management staff, things go downhill very quickly. The store is dead for the months of November-June which should be a plus, but the management from their Head Office ruins it. You report to someone who does not know how to do their job and speaks down to every single employee. Health and Safety reports are not taken seriously, and you are penalized for bringing things to their attention. The store opens up for 7 days in the summer months, and salary employees are forced to work over their 40 hours, and the “time off” you get for the hours over 40 worked only start after 44 hours. So you are working 4 extra hours a week for months for free. You have to threaten to quit to get them to give you a raise/promotion after years of being at the same salary/position. They do not want to pay employees what is deserved. You can try your best to make the culture at your specific store as best as you can, but at the end of the day the Head Office does not care and it does not make any difference. 

As a Manager I was in charge of several people including hiring, interviewing onboarding. I was supposed to have Asst Managers but the company was too cheap to pay salary. The job is never ending and extremely physical as you are always breaking down pallets of clothes and putting them away. Leadership is done out of Calgary if you can call it that. Terrible communication and they like to blame any mistakes on the local management, so they don't have to take accountability. We can only sell what we have on hand. I wasn't full trained which was supposed to happen. They did the scheduling and payroll, so I had no control over what was happening. It is a toxic environment. They STILL haven't changed the signed from Neat Uniforms to McCarty despite the fact that parents hate Neat uniforms. 

If you enjoy talking to customers then this job is for you. Fun coworkers, relaxed environment and great management. A typical day as a sales associate would consist of greeting the customer, looking up their account in the system, or creating one for them, printing out a pricelist, and going over the uniform options for their school. Next would be explaining the bundle options and trying to upsell. Then you find the sizes they need, have the customer try on the different options and cash them out. Pretty simple process that gets fun once you get the hang of it. I really enjoyed the competitive work environment when it came to selling bundles, it really motivates you to upsell. 

I worked there for a summer job and it was a great learning experience.  It started slow, in July, so I was able to comfortably learn the job before the big rush in August.  Managers and staff were great.  It was competitive sales.  Those who sold the most received bonuses.  I discovered I was a good sales person and received lots of bonuses much to my surprise and probably the managers too.  I was older than the students, so I was able to identify with the parents who were purchasing the items and I was highly motivated to make more money.  The pay was expected for a summer job.

McCarthys was a fast paced environment to work in many moons ago, they are constantly trying to grow with todays innovations however, over time, you learn they struggle to keep staff for a long period of time AND make them feel valued at the same time. Like many establishments, business comes first which in the long run hurts the company's morale and there is little room for full growth within departments, which is why staff tends to move on eventually, plus salary and benefits are not what you expect but as a retailer, at least they offer the best experience they can in order for you to grow and move on to bigger and better places.

DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMAPNY!!! You are expected to work like crazy through the summer with ridiculous mandatory overtime. They employ mostly students through the summer who don’t want to work and in the off season you work alone… The head office management team is constantly turning over. This company is losing contracts like crazy!! Do not work here!!! The pay is horrible for managers and they will try to turn you over to salary right before busy season so they don’t have to pay out all the overtime. Stay away from this company. 

There would always be something to learn or improve in such as learning how to market and sell clothing items to a broad and diverse clientele . The most enjoyable part of the job would be socializing with the amazing staff and nice costumers who always have stories to tell as you help them find their school uniform. The Hardest part of the job was at first finding where each article of clothing went throughout the store and in each of the unique boxes. Overall a great place to work.

I enjoyed working at Mccarthy Uniforms as it was a good first job experience. The employees were all kind and were all understanding and worked hard. Although stressful at times due to heavy traffic of customers nearing the end of summer, the staff proved to handle it well and with no problems at all.

Easy job when it comes to customers, horrible job when it comes to management. 
Expected to do jobs without being told anything needs to be done. 
Horrible training- when mistakes are made due to lack of training it is blamed on employee. 
No paid breaks
Gossip and discrimination in management.
