McGarrell Place

I have worked for this company for well over a decade. I have witnessed many positive and negative changes throughout my time.

The front line staff there are great compared to other facilities, and team work is also a great bonus.
However there are too many managers, as they continue to lay off psw's and create more desk jos. Supervisors and managers hover over psws and watch us like criminals. We could and would preform much better when not treated like we're not trusted to preform the job hired for.

There is bias in scheduling department, if the scheduler does not like you, you will not receive any extra hours and if you formally complain, the scheduler will retaliate and take shifts away, prented to call you in, but not actually do it, dictate your hours and preferences. 

There are cliques, as with any employer, however the chosen Union chair representative makes too many deals with management and displays lack of support towards team members, especially if your not well liked. It is the employees that are supposed to be supported, not the other way around. That is why we pay to have a union. Its just a waste of hard earned money. The Union chair person does not follow the rules and will never be reprimanded even if its a situation involving the health and safety of a resident. 
Residents needs are not being met and families that complain get the most attention while others are neglected because of shortage of front line staff, and usually care with a family that complains requires all three staff to assist in providing that one residents care needs at one time leaving thirtyone other residents to have to wait up to thirty minutes or longer for help.     

Good place to work, but would never put a family member or friend in this building for care or any other reason.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part is you as a unit person. You need to love what you do; other wise no only at Mcgarrell Place but any other job especially nursing home you do the best. The place is never identify you as a worker. I had been working on a Health Care area since 2015. I being at more than 6 different nursing home all of them are the same garbage. You are the one who make the difference. Love what you do no the company you work for. Respect the resident get to know them; then you can be Unit at your place work. Remember you make the difference not the place that you work. However, do all this with all your heart never expecting a thanks from the company management just from the residents when they thank you. No even for the family of the residents because most of the time they are ungrateful. The only person who see and notice your dedication and love for what you do is the residents. Sometimes,  you as a survey asking us about if we recommend the nursing home that work. You cannot ask me that question; because if I really love the person I would never recommend any nursing home to live.

On any nursing home; Have a bad management corporation 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Awful environment with people who hate each other. They don’t know how to work in ammonia.   

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I am on Recretion now is all fun with the residents; not the employee ok

Employee centered organization.  The management is trying its best to accommodate residents,  clients,  families,  and employees work related need.  The job is compensated with the homes customer centered values.  I am able to work with one of the most vulnerable people- the seniors and treat them like my own and enjoyed their companies especially meal time which they are looking forward everyday.

Greed and profit. The workers and people who live there are treated as numbers. Not even close to having enough staff to care for the residents. 3 staff for 32 residents.
Benefits are available, but don’t cover very much. Full time takes about 10 years to achieve. Constant cut backs. Registered staff treat non registered staff like garbage, and management doesn’t support or seem to care for non registered employees.

I enjoyed a lot working there.My co-workers were very co-operative and had an excellent helping mentality.I worked there without feeling any workload as the work schedules were very easy going.Overall I have a good impression towards this organization.

If you get hurt you are forced to come in every single shift even if you can’t move. The pay, it’s not worth it. Management? A complete joke. Shifts? You either struggle to get more than 4 or they schedule you for almost a week straight. You can’t even call in sick without feeling like you’re getting interrogated. 

stressful, heavy place to work. most nurses are nice and eager to help you and work as a team. PSW staff are not as eager. under paid for the amount of work. turn over on management. 

being switched to different units, getting to know all residents names and  there are more than 30 residents in each unit.

McGarrell place is a great environment and the staff are very friendly. Some people who work there can be quite rude to new people and they schedule you on days that your not available, even when you tell them weeks in advance that your not.

The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to know residents and conversing with them.  Great management when I worked their many years ago as a student.

Great place to work. Wonderful staff, however due to the lack of Ministry standards in regards to resident to worker ratio the only people that suffer are the people that live in the home.
