McKeil Marine Limited

For me, McKeil Marine Limited, has been a very positive workplace. They are very family oriented and I believe they care about their employees. I have been with them for 5 years and over that time they have gone out of their way to accommodate me during two family emergencies.  As an engineer they often complimented my enthusiasm and they even funded me to upgrade my ticket and Promoted me to Chief Engineer once my endorsement was complete. The Pay and Benifets are above average and the sailing crews are some of the best I have encountered during my career. During Covid, they not only called employees, they called spouses and partners to let us all know of assistance programs they have put in place to assist with any new stresses we may be having. For me, if you are proactive,  the management appreciates this and will assist with upgrades, preventative maintenance,  or guidance you may require. When I came to McKeil Marine Limited, I planned on it being a stepping stone until I got back into the offshore. But over the past 5 years, my career and family life has been so good, that now, I plan on finishing my career, and retiring a McKeil Marine Employee.

Mckeil is a fast expanding company, with work in the marine sector. I have been here for almost 4 years and have enjoyed most of the time here. The boats are maintained to an extent to keep sailing, but could put more effort into keeping them at a higher standard. Pay is good for the job at hand, it is competitive to other companies in this sector. The work can be at times very hard or very easy, expect long hours when in port! Crew is usually very family-like, i have only had a few bad experiences but i can live with that, that being said, expect crew to come and go a lot, one thing i dislike is how often crewmembers are sent to other ships, once you get to know someone they can be gone the next shift. The office crowd are getting better, overall, i see mckeil expanding to be well known on the lakes, they just have to fix some things.

What is the best part of working at the company?
You never know when crew change is, it's really keeps you on your toes, are we flying out in 12 hours or 6 days, you never know

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No company promotes faster than mckeil, if you want a 28 year old captain with minimal experience this is the company for you. Safety is secondary at mckeil.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Disorganized chaos, nobody ever knows what is going on, everything is fixed eith duct tape, nothing is ever fixed properly.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Drink as much coffee as possible, walk around pretending to work for a few hours, end your watch, eat and sleep.

This company does not care about its workers and everything they say they provide is a lie. You will be overworked and underpaid, the workplace culture is especially narrow-minded, and any benefits you will receive will be taken away in the name of cost conservativism. You are a tool at McKeil Marine, and any mention "family" should be taken as a red flag. Their motto should be "Better than Nothing" instead of "We Sail Safe."

Helped to develop team work skills in a confined environment for long periods of time.
Met many new people and developed friendships with same.
Learned how to utilize groceries that were available to me when I joined the vessel.
Learned new and regional menu items for example east coast meals

Was accepted into the greenhat program. Was put on with a crew that expected me to have experience so unwilling to teach or let me shadow and learn unfortunately. Was let go because of my lack of knowledge even tho I was eager to do. The job was boring without the ability to learn or show that I am a good hard worker.  Best to get experience elsewhere before joining this company.  

Trip by trip contract. Vessels are older, crews are good, they try and keep the vessels as best as they can. Management are penny wise and pound foolish dealing with equipment needed. They are trying to control costs, but they need direction.

Wages are low end and seasonal.

Fun and Exciting Environment. New learning experiences are an every day thing. Good teamwork and logistic management however 24/7 on call basis. Must devote large part of life to company and be passionate about it. Good place to work with perks but job title is never secure.

The days are long, 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, 6 weeks straight then 6 weeks. Living in Detroit quarters. The crew becomes your family 
The weather can get a little crazy but the travel and the ports you go into into you would never be able to do without being on a ship

If they say that they are giving you a 20% raise, it is probably meant over the next 20 years.

One of their VPs walked aboard the vessel and told us this, he lied.

Forget about any small comforts or communications, learn smoke signals.
