I don't think that a 'typical day' could be described here, as everyday is very different! Some days are slower paced, which provides an opportunity to catch up on paperwork, or do some cleaning around the house. Other days keep you quite busy doing things such as, picking-up/dropping off youth at school, taking youth to their various appointments, helping the youth learn specific life skills, taking the youth on outings (i.e. going to the gym, for a walk, grabbing a coffee, etc.). 

Working here has provided me with the opportunity to have a better understanding of harm reduction, and how I can utilize those skills within the community. It has also provided me with the ability to view things through a trauma informed lens, which can aid in the decision making process regarding individual care. 

The management is very flexible and supportive, they are willing to work around school schedules and other things that you have going on in life. Being a part of the team here is a wonderful opportunity, they are very supportive of each other  and work hard to maintain a positive work atmosphere. 

Although the job can be difficult during times, the opportunity to be a part of the team that supports a youth in being successful, makes it totally worth it. 

I really loved working here years ago, but old management and poor leadership has lead to micro-management and stagnant growth. Too much focus on numbers and micro-managing every 15 minutes of your time rather than actual outcomes. Employees are working “unpaid overtime” to ensure their numbers add up to management’s pressures. It’s time to hire some new senior leadership who are open to new ideas, and will advocate to funders’ for a new way of tracking the amazing work we do with youth and families. It also doesn’t help that there isn’t transparency when it comes to decisions being made that directly impact front-line employees. 
My supervisor was always supportive, and I loved my team, but it was time to go.
Working with youth and families could be the most rewarding part of the job, but also sometimes the most challenging (especially ensuring they didn’t cancel your appts to ensure your direct client time didn’t fall).

I was employed by McMan in Medicine Hat for a little over five years. The atmosphere and office culture were consistently friendly and supportive here. The work/life balance was amazing here! McMan offered flexibility with medical appointments in addition to the abundance of paid time off you could accrue each pay period. This is quite rare in the non-profit sector and should be noted if you’re considering applying here. McMan provided a generous amount of quality training throughout my time there. I worked in outreach and my supervisor would guarantee his availability no matter how busy he was to promote the success, and morale, of his employees. I would still be there had my program not lost funding due to changes in the provincial government, and I would have stayed on for at least five more years!

Working for Mcman was an extremely challenging experience. 

1. Unethical practices, it was disheartening to learn that it was expected Team leaders share or hold a joint bank account with the clients they served in shared living.  The company chooses to run their support programs for people with disabilities short staffed despite an increase in program or client funding, in order to recover losses. 

2. Very top heavy! Too many cooks in the kitchen. Rather than utilizing funding dollars effectively Mcman proved to spend their dollars on upper management rather than   in the heart of the company, they had teamleaders, supervisors, managers etc. 

3. High turnover rate. This company runs very much like a dictatorship, therefore the turn over rate is high, waisting funding on excessive training for new employees.

What is the best part of working at the company?
My shifts,  4 on 4 off. Shifts are 12 hrs. Benefits are great, pay is up to par

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Changes without consideration for staff. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment can be stressful,  depending on the mood of the individuals.  The company is pretty good, most times,  but other times not. The change things, moving individuals without talking to staff. They tell us if we're not comfortable doing something, we can talk to them and they will accommodate us,  that is not the case at the moment. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy,  cooking and cleaning, lawn care, doing case notes, not a lot of downtime, even though management thinks otherwise.

My supervisor thrived on setting an authoritative example for staff and clients. Most staff were not accredited for the position they held. 

When accreditation evaluations took place, we were given clear instructions to lie and present false information so that they could maintain their contract. 

I don't wish any negativity to my colleagues but I can truly say that working under this individual's direction stressed me out more than the cliental ever did. 

When I began my new position I had a new standard of professionalism to compare my previous employment to. 

Needless to say, they do not act on behalf of the client and solely prioritize their own interests. 

Very challenging with co-workers. Individuals with less then average skills working with clients with challenges equals managing chaos.Working with clients, was the only positive side. Management either doesn't see what's happening or in some cases are overwhelmed and choose to not do anything to address problems. Didn't feel appreciated during my short time there. Wasn't worth their while to even talk to me to get more information on why I wanted to resign. I guess in the end they showed who they really are. Would never choose them as an employer ever again.

Mcman offers great benefits and work hours. The employees are very nice and welcoming. However some of the clients are too high risk and not put into proper programming, which puts the lives of staff and other clients in danger.  Management such as supervisors require a lot more training and there should be more safety precautions put into place.

Their thorough training to prepare you and support working with both the client and the department

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I work from home, so. I get the client ready for their program or appointment. Assistant them in arriving on time. I prepare a meal, assist the client  for end of day care. I write a report

I very much enjoyed the work with the clients and my coworkers were great! However management was not what I would expect for this type of agency. For an agency that values Respect as one if its core values the management is the opposite of that. Small mistakes are given a great deal of attention, where you can do a lot of great work it will not get recognized. Management will make work of putting you through the paperwork to document your mistake and put on your file. No designated break times.
