Do not work here.  There are enough talented, bright and well-managed companies to continue or begin your career.

Medcan isnt the place for that.  

I spent more than 2 years at this company and was laid-off due to COVID.  It was the biggest blessing of my life.  I did not realize how burnt out and tired I was from working there.

I was subjected to 60 hour work weeks, weekends, week nights and was instructed not to take vacation for a year due to a large scale digital transformation project that was being underway (by the way, this project was a complete disaster and was mis-managed up from the top.  An absolute gong show and caused a lot of employees to quit).

The lack of leadership in not only my department but the company as a whole is the equivalent of kids in a candy store.  nobody know what they are doing and it shows.

I was not supported in my job whatsoever and was made to be the scapegoat in a lot of situations.  i worked for a tyrant of a boss who preferred to gossip all day rather than do work.  Unbelieveable!

I could go into more details, but I am grateful for the experience - because it made me realize that all the other companies I worked at before were incredible!  This just showed me what I dont want in a job.

The only bright spot is they hire well and I worked with a ton of good, smart people who are just as disenfranchised as I was and were looking for the nearest exit.

How Medcan got listed as one of Canada’s 50 best managed companies is a mystery to me as their upper management team is their biggest liability. Many well paid managers of this product or that service, doing what honestly appears to be nothing while the patient support team (nurse consultants, referral team, medical secretaries) work overtime and miss lunch to service clients and crank out reports on time. As someone else mentioned, there is a huge disconnect between workers (who are doing 99% of the real “bread and butter” work of this company) and upper management. Almost every person on my team cried at work within the first 3-6 months, including myself.  I’ve never experienced that. 

One saving grace- I actually had the best boss I’ve ever had as an employee.

But even she couldn’t save our team. Turnover is very high at this company; not just due to disgruntled employees quitting but they also seem to fire people for sport.  One day, someone is there, the next day they are just gone. 

Do yourself a favour and apply elsewhere.

Work is not over stressful, but at the same time 75% of the work goes unnoticed. Upper management has no idea where the company is going and the only focus is to maximize the profits of the owner. Being a privately held company, there is no accountability and the hiring-firing is very erratic. The company is confused if it wants to be in retail sector vs services, which leads to confusion at all management levels. 
Would not recommend working here as you are always under the threat of being laid off. 
One important thing to note is to stay in the company you need to butter the right people. Favoritism is a big thing here. It kills the morale to perform. 

Management is more focused on $$$ and less on patient care.  The amount of money a client spends dictates level of service.  

Workload is crazy, no time for breaks or lunch.  You will put in a lot of extra hours (unpaid) just to get your work done.  Many wonderful and caring people have left the organization as a result.

Staff complain CONSTANTLY about the poor working environment, workload and stress but are too afraid to speak up.  Very negative environment and a lot of unhappy people.  Medcan likes staff who smile and say "YES" to everything, no matter the toll it takes on you.

Director in the patient support area does not listen or take concerns seriously.  Very dismissive and will talk right over you.  HR is distant and also does what they are told.  No one is standing up for or helping staff.

-The senior leadership has destroyed what was once a positive work culture. CEO does not value employees. Has an attitude of 'if you don't like it then leave'.
- As a 'wellness company', puts no effort into ensuring their own house is 'well'. People on stress leave; job security is very low; little collaboration as people focused solely on own deliverables; water cooler chat frowned upon...
-CEO is rarely present and does not interact with regular employees when he is. He is a very poor leader who does not know how to motivate employees.
-Extremely high attrition. Talent leaves as there's no room to grow a career.
- Strongly recommend that you stay away. If not, I can guarantee you'll be wishing you took this advice less than a month into the job

It is an American owned company.  The client service coordinators seem to do the Lion's share of the work for the physicians. The management was like working with "Mean Girls" and the wages and hours where laughable considering the amount of work they did and the cost patients paid for the services.  The wage per hour needed to be double for how much responsibility the client service coordinators had and the extra hour per day they were forced to work is completely unfair.   Also, expect non existing lunch breaks because of the HUGE work loads.  The doctors, nurses and techs are very good though, and you do get what you pay for as a client.

I've been at Medcan for over a year and have seen so many positive changes since joining that have focused on employee engagement and culture. The people are amazing and everyone is ready and willing to help each other. This makes for a very collaborative and enjoyable experience. The company is always looking for new way to service their clients and be a true leader in the medical sector. 

Dealing very Professional people.

Expanded my horizon in dealing with External Customers ( Patients ) and internal customers ( Doctors and Nurses and Administrators as well as Executives )

High class environment, compassionate people it was very appealing to me.
It was a six month contract position.Very educational and  gained lot of knowledge.

Team playing was very important and it was much my style of atomsphere.

Management: 
Middle management was quite frustrated as the work just got distributed when an employee left the company.
Revolving door with a lot of the middle management leaving 
Upper management is quite disconnected from the staff. 
Unfortunately, the company is short staffed and the management is concerned about cutting cost and increasing revenue which can lead to occasional disgruntled clients. 
You have to fight for a salary increase.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I work as a coordinator and I work from home.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The expectation is too. You end up working way more hours than you supposed to. 



What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very toxic.
Some colleagues are very rude.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working more than 9 hours. 
Everyday is a struggle and stressful.
