Menchies Frozen Yogurt

A typical day consisted of preparing yogurt and toppings, cleaning machines when they ran out of yogurt, working the cash register, and washing dishes. Before closing the store, you had to clean all the spoons and put away all the cold toppings, sweep and mop the floors, take out the trash, and count the till. When I worked here, two of us closed the store, and it usually took about half an hour after closing to finish the duties. One of us would clean all the spoons, etc., while the other would close the tills. You generally wanted to be the person closing the till.

As long as there weren't people in the store, we were allowed to sample yogurt and toppings. We were also allowed $5.50 worth of yogurt every shift. We were given an apron that we got to keep, as well as a t-shirt. We were allowed a half hour break every shift, as long as we clocked out. I mainly worked 4 hour shifts, and I was still allowed breaks.

The whole job was pretty laid-back. I rarely saw my manager, since she worked mornings and I only worked evenings. As far as I knew, nobody ever got fired because it's pretty hard to mess up. During winter, it's extremely slow. This made some shifts pretty painful, but all my coworkers were really nice and fun to talk to. 

We had an empty schedule sitting under the till, and basically we would fill out what days we could work and cross out what days we couldn't. Most of the time you could get the days off that you wanted.
Since there weren't a lot of people working there, it was pretty hard getting your shift covered. Most of the time it was impossible.

Washing the dishes wasn't too bad, since you were mainly just washing fruit off stuff. So no bad smells, etc. My main issue was that the detergent/sanitizer was really hard on my hands. It was so bad that I actually ended up getting eczema. There were rubber gloves, but the sink was often filled up enough that water would get inside them anyways.

Overall, it was an easy job. My main issues were with scheduling and the detergent being hard on my hands.

My typical day at Menchies being a Junior Mixologist included:

-Checking what yogurts needed to be filled and then making them
-Doing the dishes
-Cutting fruits
-Filling all the toppings
-Being a cashier
-Cutting brownies & nanimo bars
-Cleaning tables
-Making customers happy
+ other things

Sometimes I'd come in and I'd have to make waffle bowls, and if I was opening a shift we had to clean 1 machine, which held 2 yogurts.

I liked my job a lot. But the manager was never around, we always had to do things ourselves. We would very often run out of fruit, especially strawberries, which is our #1 topping which lead customers to be very unhappy. Also, we'd run out of the ingredients we NEEDED to make certain yogurts, so he would tell us to 'just go without it' or to not refill the yogurt. Along with that, if we didn't run out of fruit, the fruit would be all mouldy/squishy, but he told us to just cut those parts off and put it out anyways. 

No one wanted to work when I was hired so I got tons of shifts, but then once the college/university students finished their 1st semester, they all wanted to work so myself and the other highschoolers' hours got completely CUT. I went from working 7 hour shifts (or 6 once winter hours began) & some opening shifts on weekends, to only working 2/3 hour shifts on weekdays and MAYBE a weekend shift. Also, once it became winter no one wanted frozen yogurt so there was not much to do.

The owner was never involved, as he lived in another province.

The manager left out tons of stuff while training me and then got irritated when I didn't know I was supposed to do certain things.

My co workers, for the most part, were amazing, hilarious people that I miss a lot. They taught me a lot of things and were always so understanding.

A job at Menchie's Frozen Yogurt is a great job for students, part-time or for simply to start as a new job with no previous experiences.
It's fun, easy and a great way to gain skills in customer service, communication, and team work. Along with experiences in cashier, cleaning maintenance and food production. A typical day in nice weather can be busy with rushes of customers and promotions of coupons and other store advertisements giving your day with lots to do but the hours going by faster. for colder seasons, it's usually slower with fewer customers. Management is well kept, giving employers an open mind and to use "good judgement" on store products and with problem- solving. There is always a person, usually the supervisor, to help manage the restaurant. There isn't much anything hard about this job, it's all basic. the most I can say by my experience is keeping tabs on each customers groupons in the dialog entry, since there is so many it can be hard to find. It can all be simple with well and exceptional training. The most enjoyable part of the job is making samples of treats to be occasionally set as a topping for yogurt in the kitchen, and being very creative, could even come up with your own treat approved by management for customers to try.

Menchies is a great place to work because you are able to create a positive work environment that makes those long hours/late nights enjoyable. You will see customers who come often and they will remember you which will allow you to have the chance to talk with them and have their input on the flavours. Seeing customers takes on what they mix together, such as green apple sorbet and peanut butter sauce gives you ideas on what to try and recommend to other customers. You become so close with your co-workers, being able to talk with them outside of work. Management you are able to express your ideas and they will certainly listen. You are able to take leadership and handle situations on your own which makes you confident for life outside of work or even in other work situations. Overall Menchies is a great place to work and working there always puts a smile on your face because of how happy the kids are coming in to create a yogurt, or even the adults gets extremely excited as well.

Due to Menchie's being a franchise, my experience might vary from those who work at other locations. The overall experience of working at Menchie's was very rewarding as it taught me responsibility, valuable life lessons & the leadership skills it requires to be a member of management. Management was very relaxed (to a fault) which called for me to step above and beyond my role in order to keep the store running; which was obviously stressful at times. I had various responsibilities, such as, making the yogurt, cleaning the machines, repairing them (if need be), merchandising the store, cleaning, ordering stock and making the schedule etc. Looking back on it, Menchie's one of the best jobs I've ever had and I regret not appreciating it as much as I could have in the time I was there. It's a great place to work and it would make a great first job!

The only time I actually had something to do was the first hour of my shift which was opening the store, or the last hour of my shift where I was closing the store. Since Menchie's is a self-serve frozen yogurt establishment, there was not much for me to do. Occasionally when a customer came in, I would clean tables and chairs or refill cups/spoons and make yogurt, but that is it. The management there was awful. The particular location I worked at was owned by a family, and they would bring their issues into the workplace which I thought was extremely unprofessional. I was scheduled for 9 hours, given a 1 hour break, and I would be by myself for the full 8 hours with not much to do.  My manager would only give me a 3 day notice for when my next shift would be, and scheduled me on days that were not part of my availability. The only enjoyable part of the job was getting 50% off on my frozen yogurt.

At Menchie's, I had the opportunity to work alongside very many talented and friendly individuals. We worked as a team to make sure customer's had a memorable experience, and we would always see familiar faces! I enjoyed this job because I was able to interact with a wide variety of people and allow myself to experience a true customer service position that will benefit me in my future. The hardest part about the job was not being able to have longer conversations with customers due to long line ups, because many of them were so friendly and it was always a pleasure to have nice conversations with nice people. While working at Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, I learned how to be an efficient and hardworking member in a fast paced working environment.

I am very grateful for the opportunity that Menchie's provided me to run two of his Menchie's stores in Victoria, BC. I had the privilege to open the stores from scratch, being in contact with providers, contractors, hiring and training staff, etc..
I strengthened my understanding of customer service, business development, management, fundraising, event planning and marketing strategies.
 I have executed successful campaigns and created strong partnerships with clients and vendors related to the industry like the University of Victoria, Camosun College, Harbour Cats baseball team, Rifflandia Music Festival, V.I Fitness, Color Me Mine, schools, non-profit organizations, community sports teams, among others. All of my efforts led to increased notoriety, sales and profit for Menchie’s.

A typical day at Menchies is usually checking all the yogurts, making new ones, clean the back and front of store, greeting all customers in a friendly manner, using the cash register. Usually I would always have someone to work with so it was usually never boring but it definitely wasn't a fast-pace environment. The hardest part of that job was probably closing because you always had to make sure to do absolutely everything before leaving the store. The best part about that job was seeing all the kids and watching them have fun and be all excited about getting yogurt, plus it was really calm and relaxing, you were almost never in a rush to do anything. Definitely not the job for me.

the management was okay. i didn't like that i was always talked about in a daily log Book. that the manger had. 
 the hardest part of the job was making sure the bathrooms and also the floors where cleaned. and then have to also make sure that the yogurt trays where also washed for the next day.  
 the most  Enjoyable part of the job was that we got to have fun and people got to rent the place for parties. and one of us employees had to dress up as the mascot Menchie the yogurt guy so because i was the newest employee i Had to dress up as him.
