The level of bullying, racism and discrimination that I both experienced and witnessed over my three years with the organisation was shocking beyond words. There is a good reason staff turnover is so high - the vast majority of staff from Management upwards are either active perpetrators or are complicit in their silence (including the Executive team). 

The employment contract you are asked to sign upon engagement includes a non-disclosure agreement about information pertaining to the organisation and its operations, and I assume this tactic is how the organisation manages to avoid any legal action.

The concept of 'strategic planning' is largely non-existent - the Board is completely out of sync with the Executive and the expectations that Health Canada has for the organisation, which results in reactive and disorganised work planning processes for each new mandate. Decision-making is completely top-down, and staff are expected to execute unrealistic and poorly conceived work plans. 

If you care about First Nations, Inuit and Metis health and wellness, I highly recommend you ask the National Indigenous Organisations for their views on the MHCC.

The pay and benefits were great - aside from the minimal mental health benefits you get (considering you're working for The MHCC). Unfortunately, the office culture was atrocious and was what lead to over 20+ people leaving the organization in the short time I was there. For a company who prides themselves in great workplace mental health, their office is anything but. I found my time there was incredibly stressful - many people off on indefinite stress leave. Workload was heavy and demanding, managers were not well trained and incredibly distanced from their staff. Derogatory comments and harassment took place often with no resolve.

Great employee benefits and professional development. Staff are very supportive of each other. Although the different programs work very independently of each other, they often cross paths and contribute information for the larger cause of Mental Health.

What is the best part of working at the company?
It was a stress-free job. Managers were clear about what they wanted and what they expected and appreciated the good work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There was no stressful part. But it was a part-time job, that's it.

Although the MHCC spends a lot of time talking about mental health in the workplace, the number of staff who took stress leave during my time there was shocking. From inefficiency of managers to disengaged, jet-setting executives, the MHCC is in dire need of a complete overhaul.

I work under contract and provide services as required. On average I provide around 10 courses per year, both locally and across Canada. All contacts have been easy to coordinate with, and payments have always been received in a timely fashion.

Worked at the MHCC for over a year. No direction from executive team. Tumultuous inner office politics. Unreasonable workloads. High turnover and job dissatisfaction. 

Good wages and benefits.

I was laid off along with many others for "budgetary" reasons. There are serious issues with high management and leadership turnover. Never a good sign, especially in non-profit sector.

It actually a good place to work where we get to meet different people to work with. Great staff and  all team member are nice people to work with but don’t forget to alwys mind your business.

A typical work day was fun for the 8hours and it was a diversity cultural environment.
