Michelin in The Valley used to be THE place to work, not anymore.

The work/life balance is fine as long as you don't mind the shift work. Some people hate it, I didn't mind it. The people, for the most part, are good people, even if they are awful managers, which there are a lot of.

Management was why I left Michelin. They will always push you for better production, regardless of whether or not you are hurt. When you do get hurt, they send you to physio until you meet the very bare minimum requirements for the job instead of getting your health back to where it was before, resulting in future injuries (Which you will totally be judged for by anyone above the Business Unit Leader position). Treating employees like trash for being hurt on the job is why I left. I hated the job, but at least I was treated well until I was hurt, but after that there was absolutely no reason to stay. This is likely why plant morale was at an all time low when I left, why they will never have the production they used to, and ultimately why Michelin is no longer the place to work in The Valley.

The hardest part of the job, in my area, was keeping the machines running. Pretty well all of the machines I worked with were jury rigged to work, not to a dangerous extent of course, but holy cow they hardly ever ran correctly. When production wasn't met, upper management would have the gall to suggest that it was the workers not doing enough work from time to time, which was nice.... Blamed everything but the hardly functioning machines from the 60's.

Honestly, the most enjoyable part of the job is the people you'll work with. In my area there were a lot of really nice people and it was the only part of the job I missed when I left. 

Oh, and I think the hiring standards were dumbed down so there's some pretty dumb people that work there... Used to hire people with brains that could think, however it seems that a brain is no longer required to work for Michelin, just a body they will abuse until it breaks.

Really though, the management there is a whole other degree of incompetent. I really cannot stress this enough.

Was initially excited to start work there. Started in an Operator/Maintainer position which meant I operated the equipment and was able to perform maintenance as required. (turned out to be about 80% operator duties/20% maintenance duties.) Was not interested in being a machine operator with over 20 years process controls experience so was moved to another department as a reliability technician. Again, this turned out to be 90% mechanical/ 10% electronic. Moved to a Calibration Technician position which got me out of the maintenance pay scale and found out it was a dead end position with no room for advancement  and only cost of living pay increases. Enquired about returning to maintenance but had to go for further testing at my own expense and time. Finally reached a dead end and left for a more suitable position. Michelin likes to hire electronics/electrical people and place them in predominately mechanical jobs ??? In order to move up the maintenance pay scale, you are required to do both written testing and practical testing for both electrical troubleshooting and mechanical assembly and alignment to advance. Most mechanics have difficulty passing the Electrical Troubleshooting and most Electrical/Electronics people have difficulty passing the mechanical assembly/alignment which means your advancement is delayed until you pass both. Very stressful and to me totally unnecessary for a 20+ year experienced electronics technician (process controls)

The 'dayshifters' will say that safety is the number one priority, and that might have been true in another part of the plant, but not in tire building. They expect you to build, build, build, and then build some more. They care about production over anything else. I know one person, who recently started, was told to only take so much break time because their production numbers were low. This person never took long breaks. EVER! Very good work ethic, just didn't have the speed of an experienced builder. 
       I suffer with  diagnosed mental health issues, and when asked by my doctor and psychologist to find a better work environment, we still couldn't find a good fit. ( They didn't try ) I quit because of this. Shift work is extremely hard on your body and mind. I don't recommend it not matter where you work. It is hard to find a work life balance when working days and nights.
     As for the atmosphere and colleagues, there are SO MANY CLIQUES! If you weren't brown nosing or 'in' with the right people, you will not get ahead. Sadly a lot of great, hard working employees get passed over. 
     One positive thing, you will make friends with some people you work with because you spend more time with them than your families.

Mandatory overtime is the reason I gave it a "1" for work life balance.  

Michelin needs to understand if "you" call in sick, it s not "my" responsibility.  If you know from 40 years of data that 2% of your people will be off work on any given day and you fail to hire 2% more staff (or whatever portion it is), you're an idiot,
 and if you blame shortages on workers declining overtime and not poor planning by management. you've proven that as an organisation you have consciously decided not to solve the problem, and you are fine with forcing sick workers to show up and infect others

When I started to work for that company, I was hired as a typist. Many months after I started to learn computer system. I threw myself in learning and I knew it so well that I was able to do all the work that was given to me. Later, I have learned to work at the Purchases department and I spent the last five years of my work in the Accounting department. I will rate that company as the best of all because they knew that I wanted and liked to learn and the Human Resources gave me a great opportunity to develop myself in my work environment.

Most of my co-workers were  very amiable and the ambiance was, I must say, warm. Like any where else, there are pros and cons and you learn to deal with it on a daily basis.

I wish to find again a place where I will be able to show my capability as a hard and positive worker and who's not afraid to learn. Even if my schooling was not the highest doesn't mean that I cannot do a great work.

My personal experience with Michelin has been all good. The only downfall to this kind of production job is the long hours you are required to work along with the night shifts. They are long 12 hour shifts. When you come off a line of night shifts you are left with your day to recover and only the next day to run your errands then back to work the next day.
The management can honestly have some improvement. Some employees just should not be in these positions.With saying this, some managers will try to accommodate you time off if needed
The co-workers are amazing, very understanding and caring for each other. It is a big family.
The benefits to Michelin is your vacation time, your medical/rrsp/dental and short term disability through the company.
I have attended career fairs through the plant and to move up in any type of day job is nearly impossible

Great environment to work in. Always worked with a wide variety of people across the plant who were always very friendly and willing to help in any way possible. Typical day at work involved being out on the plant floor talking to workers and taking measurements/readings of equipment from time to time. Other time was spent in the office researching and preparing spreadsheets and other submissions. Learned much about the tire manufacturing process as well as the engineering involved in industrial ventilation. Management was quite good and was always very approachable. Hardest part of the job was the independence of my particular work term deliverable on industrial ventilation improvements. Most enjoyable part of the job was interfacing with numerous business units to get the job done i.e. Safety, Engineering, Production, Maintenance & Reliability, etc.

You would be reaponsible for running your post the entire 12 hour shift, making sure everything ran smoothly and also fixing any errors or malfunctions. There were days where everything would run great and you'd have spare time to help others or clean up around your area, and other days where you were fixing your machines for a majority of the shift, just trying to keep them running.

Management was good as far as I witnessed, they seemed to care and wanted to help you as much as they could by giving advice or training to help your productivity.

Hardest part of the job was working in the middle of summer around huge machines every day, very hot and humid, physically demanding to say the least.

The most enjoyable part of the job was the people I worked with, they were all great people who liked to work and have fun at the same time.

I began my career with Michelin Tires (Canada) Ltd. at the age of 19. I have spent the following 30 years advancing my position within the company. Michelin is a great company with wonderful workers and a promising future. They carry a vision of the future but not forgetting where they've been. I began as a production worker and advanced to the maintenance sector. I worked on the shop floor for quite a few years advancing my knowledge of various maintenance procedures. I pride myself on my ability to mentor fellow team members as well as troubleshooting situations. I am very comfortable working alone or within a team to attain desired results. I have created an inventory Excel spread sheet and status sheet that has now become the benchmark of most Michelin plants within North America. I am very proud of my accomplishments with Michelin Tires but now feel it is time to challenge myself in another career.

Michelin is a very good company to work for. They pride themselves on providing a safe working environment to a diverse workforce while supporting the communities in the surrounding area.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There are company standards that are required to be met in quality, production and safety and these may sometimes be stressful to newer employees.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Generally, it is a team environment where employees need to work together to reach production targets.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
On the safety side of the business, I am responsible for machine risk analysis, so each day brings new challenges.
