I worked at Mid Island Co-op’s Nicol Liquor Store and was genuinely disappointed by the level of unprofessionalism in the workplace. The job itself was straightforward — serving customers, keeping the store organized, and handling transactions — but the environment made it stressful and discouraging.

There was a lot of gossip, bullying, and passive-aggressive behavior from certain employees, and management often looked the other way or even sided with the wrong people. When issues were raised, instead of being handled fairly or with empathy, they were brushed off or minimized. It became clear that speaking up only created tension instead of solutions.

Turnover is very high at this location, and it’s easy to see why. The problem isn’t the customers or the workload — it’s the internal culture and lack of leadership accountability. It’s unfortunate, because it could be a great place to work if respect and professionalism were taken seriously.

Greatest aspects were getting along with some coworkers and customers. Other than that, nothing too special. Dealt with nasty customers and drug addicts. Not enough staff put on shift in the summertime to deal with responsibilities and the amount of customers. Left no choice but to clock out late and wouldn’t be paid overtime. Wintertime was ok. It didn’t make any sense for both managers to be put on during the daytime, often leaving the nighttime staff with no manager on shift. Had to deal with situations out of my power because of this. Had to train new staff without extra support. Never really got a consistent schedule or hours. HR staff would not even acknowledge employees when coming into the store. The payroll department was unresponsive. Overall I just felt unappreciated during my time there :(  Wouldn’t recommend. 

The core staff was excellent to work with. Location is awesome! Unfortunately, the manager had a habit of  stirring up discord amongst staff.  Being almost the only place in town to work, filing a complaint meant losing your job because the manager would single you out and make work life horrible until you quit. 

Day one I realized everything I was told in the interview was a lie. Inconsistent hours, poor training, schedules come out at the very last minute despite being promised four weeks in advance. One of the most poorly managed companies I've ever worked for.

Stock freezer, and the fridge. cleaning the bathroom, sweep and mop the floor, face the products on the shelves, stock cigarettes, making coffee then ensure that all cups, lids and condiments are stocked on the shelves. Clean the pumps, garbage and windshield w outside and insideash

Pay supervisors less than a dollar more than regular employees and expect you to sweat for every penny. HR will bully you and use private information against you. They broke basic privacy laws and then let me go.

Absolutely the worst company I have ever worked for!!! Everything they say they offer like benefits, courses, raises, advancements, safety, policies, procedures etc are a lie!!!
Management and Upper Management should be fired!!! 
This company is not for our community!!!

They demand a high level of work ethic and they support it with living wages and benefits with pensions. It’s a company that is supporting local charities. There is room to climb the ladder and advance to upper levels in the company. 

Work daily with great people who care about our members. Lots of support to pull from when needed. Great Benefits, Pension plan, Salary, Perks and Bonus program. Always looking to grow and develop our people in their roles.


A great place to work. Amazing management. I met many co workers here who became my life long friends and became like family to me. I am proud to say I have my co op family for the rest of my life and we all started as strangers working at a gas station!
