Typical work day: Start 7:00 am, check my emails and respond to what I can and flag the ones that need more research. Then I go through my work basket. And just deal with walk-in and phone calls are they come in until 4:00 pm.

What you learned: I learn more about the different highways Saskatchewan has and how much work it take to maintain them. I learned more about the hiring process and what it entails. 

Management: My manager is a very down to Earth, approachable individual who will take the time to actually get to know you beyond the job. 

Workplace culture: Culture is very important in this ministry and it is almost family like, where everyone looks out for one another and goes the extra mile to help out.

Hardest part of the job: If you're not from Saskatchewan and you're not to familiar with difference lakes and town then it might be a little difficult at first. I found that not being a native of this province made it hard for me to check into highways complaint because I wasn't to sure where they were, but with practice and a map I've figured things out.

Most enjoyable part of the job: Would be getting to see different part of Saskatchewan that I don't think I would have seen otherwise, working and meeting great people, and feeling purposeful in my position.

Working as a Surveying Assistant with the Ministry of Highways Saskatchewan was an enriching and hands-on experience. The team atmosphere was supportive and professional, with senior engineers and surveyors always willing to share their expertise. I had the opportunity to participate in several field and office projects, including highway layout, topographic surveys, and data processing using Total Stations and GPS equipment. Safety was always the top priority, and the Ministry provided excellent training and guidance to ensure every task was done correctly and efficiently. I also gained valuable knowledge about construction management, quantity measurements, and the use of software like AutoCAD Civil 3D. The work environment encouraged learning, communication, and teamwork, allowing me to develop both technical and organizational skills. Overall, it was a rewarding experience that strengthened my confidence in civil engineering and prepared me for future projects in the transportation and infrastructure field.

Ministry of highways is a great place to work, the look after the people in the shop, and on the roads. we would work longer days for one 5 day week and get two fridays off the following weeks, as a person on the lower end of skill set for the job, I make 25 an hour which is way better than most other places the only down side is that there is union. They can be helpful or hindering depending on the situation. Highways is also very safety conscious, the amount of safety will make you nervous to do anything, 

Toolbox meetings to start the day. \i learned how to operate the loader and tractor and that safety is #1. Management was always organized and communicated well with the workers. Co-workers were all awesome guys and women all helpful and ready to work. The work was good nothing too hard really but if i had to say it would probably be working alone. the most enjoyable part of work would be how we all had fun laughing enjoying work.

Pay sucks and your just a puppet on a string. Take pictures and document everything, don't share anything with coworkers as there waiting to stab you in the back. Most coworkers are 3 yrs away from retirement and won't help out in anyway. Everyone walks on pins and needles. 

I enjoyed working here friendly coworkers always willing to help new employees learn their job responsibilities. Driving gravel trucks and plowing snow in winter with modern up to date equipment

I was in a management position , but my job was taken over by the communications branch of the ministry. it did not work out because the new director did not know a thing about highways and has since been hidden away in the ministry of education.

Laid back place to work, can be very busy at times. Upper management has a lot of useless meeting. Unionized positions but usually understaffed and term positions posted.

Everyday is challenging yet based on the type of business it is a constant repetition of daily operations. I have learned a great deal in my management role and love training and working toward future progress.

Great and open management, intelligent and collaborative coworkers. The hardest part of the job, the amounts of reading. The most enjoyable part, sharing with coworkers and finishing a document you have been working on for long
