Ministry of the Attorney General

I have worked within Central West Region at a Courthouse for 3 years. As a Court Clerk/ CCR we are undervalued, underappreciated and receive no positive feedback from our supervisor. Since the pandemic we have now taken on more responsibilities with no increase in pay. Our location is a stressful and toxic environment with a moderate turn over rate. As a contract employee, I work between 10-25 hours per week. I am only working when a courtroom is running, sometimes they are open for 2 hours sometimes all day so the hours really fluctuate. There is no job security as the majority of the positions are contract. Advancement I have yet to see at this location, the hiring supervisor has always hired from without. The Clerks that have advanced to a fulltime position have done so by applying to another location. 
A typical day.. As a CCR I would retrieve my folder of information's for the accused that are appearing. There is criminal court, video and bails, and family. ACCURACY is very important, we endorse the information's with next court date, who appeared, how they appeared, ect - this is all done in blue ink on the paper. we can endorse anywhere from 1 - 1000 information's a day. 
This position requires a lot of organization and being able to handle stressful situations. You need to be out spoken so that the lawyers don't try and run the court for you. 
It's a great starting position, but if you have  things such as a mortgage and are a single parent this job will not make you enough money. 

Busy - Supporting HRC/clients verbal/written/email, maintain accurate position data 100% (HRIS-M) recruitment/staffing, update Job description, grievance, employee documentation/benefits etc.,

Learned - Patience, Coordination and attention to detail

Management - Depends on whom..

Co-workers - Total respect and excellent team players

Hardest - Not being able to investigate and resolve complex issues to clients asap.,

The most enjoyable part of my job is supporting and providing excellence in service to HRC/Clients on a daily basis. Liaise with line management out in the field to provide advice and clarification when needed regarding relevant human resources policies, procedure and guidelines. And to also investigate/resolve complex issues while making sure employee position status and their pay/benefits entitlements are updated correctly, so that the HRIS/HRMS data reports/org charts for permanent and part-time employees in the organization/branch is reliable for day-today operation and fiscal year end statistic.

•	Demonstrated the ability to conduct, investigate, research, organize and present on pertinent laws, regulations, and legal articles as well proven ability to investigate the facts of a case, analytical thinker and problem solver
•	Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, PCLaw, Westlaw, Time Matters, Digital Dictation and PGTed

What is the best part of working at the company?
There is absolutely nothing positive to report. This was the worst experience of my professional career. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Apart from the terrible work environments, toxic co-workers, and broken equipment- the disconnect between the policies and actual day-to-day transactions creates significant gaps in management. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
My experience as a coloured woman was nothing less than horrible. The way people operate is very nuanced, calculated, and unprofessional. I had to leave due to PTSD. This environment put my literal life in danger, and instead of supporting me, they stuck to thier policy guys and made me work in a dangerous environment that perpetuated my PTSD. I almost lost my baby due to the stress, and they didn't care.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You come in, sign into your admin console, grab your assignments for the day, and then it is survival.

This place has a thoroughly toxic culture that breeds toxic management, turning good-natured people into an unrecognizable cog.  Toxic management is rewarded, even when questions about the harm they inflict arise . You will not thrive.   Favouritism, nepotism and office politics run rampant and nearly unchecked.  Some of the nepotism is done openly and shamelessly.  Management plays favourites and is vengeful.  Rather than prop you up, they look for ways to get back at you and express disdain if you’re not in their good graces or one of their favorites.  Training is abysmal, virtually does not exist.  Respect yourself by staying away.  I cannot stress it enough: avoid - gain experience literally anywhere else! - avoid by all means and manners. 

If you want a job that is not monotonous and boring, this is a winner. There is always something to learn, and things are always changing. Many different roles and business lines (criminal, family, civil, small claims, etc) and I have found management to be pretty accommodating if you want to learn something new. You do start as FXT (temporary, on call), and it can be quite challenging to secure a permanent full-time position as they don’t come available often. It took me a year and a half to get a full-time position, but that timeframe can be longer or shorter depending on the court location. But if you are lucky enough to get full-time, you get comprehensive benefits, government pension and paid vacation. I am also fortunate enough to work in a location with fantastic management. I am very happy working here.

A typical day at work would be stressful, lots of paperwork to complete in a timely fashion. This job is not for someone who can't deal with significant stress. Usually had a good relationship with everyone, I felt thankful to have an excellent paying job with benefits. I learned even more about being meticulously organized and working as a team, with someone else in an extremely busy court. My listening skills were sharpened because the paperwork had to be accurate before the Justice would sign, thus making it an order. The most enjoyable part of my job was the people I assisted in so many different ways. I always felt elated when I could change a feeling of despair,  into a grateful smile. As for management in a bureaucracy, the very nature of the word tells the story.

No day is ever the same.  It is interesting work but can be stressful - you hear about the horrible things people are capable of doing - see a lot of mental illness, addiction issues.  It can be very emotionally exhausting.  Management is not good - they hire people who are close friends and keep them on when they can't do the job - you shouldn't be training in the same courtroom for 10 months and still screwing up.  Also, bring people back on accommodation and let them train for jobs that aren't even part of their job description - i.e. court clerk now training as a court services officer - not in their original job description - has to be union issues there.  Management lets some of the staff run the place instead of disciplining them - very toxic work environment.

- They treat you like a slave if you are on contract and you will never become full time unless by some miracle there is an opening or you know people.  Of all the positions avilaible in OPS, MAG is by far the worst of all.  
- It is a two tier system there.  One tier consists of the permanant staff and the other tier consists of the contract workers who are replacable and treated as such.  Basically, you never know what hours you will be working and have the same schedule as an uber driver.  
- Of all ministries, this one is the most strict.
- They utilize a paper sign in sheet for when you go in and go out, yet they fail to realize that by tapping your secuirty ID, an employer can simply pull the time log.  

Do not work as a CCR at the courthouse at all. They do not give enough training sessions and train you way too fast. The people in the court talk very fast for long periods of time without any breaks and many times do not spell any words. It just seems they are trying to get their work done as fast as possible and do not care if you miss what they say. Sometimes they do not say who they are and just start talking.  Many of the courts are freezing cold and nothing is done to resolve those. Some of the coworkers just ghost you for no reason and pretend to be nice in person.  The feedback given by the supervisors is not helpful and vague. They do not care about your performance and do not provide any advice to help you improve. You are only a number here and can be removed at any time. Worst experience seen so far.
