Modern Niagara

I worked with Modern Niagara for 2 years on the Calgary  Cancer Centre . I enjoyed most of my time there , very unique project to be apart of.  Many issues I had with the company asrise internally between shop and management , heavily effected install and morale . Communication between Foreman was selective,  it seemed to be divided amongst some of management and didn't at all feel like a team unless you were "good with a foreman " .  Material sent  from the shop never worked and had be altered continuously , while also arriving multiple weeks and/or months late after submission.  Began to feel like a number not a name very quick . BIM program is a joke and the people involved were clueless on this project , stick to engineered drawings .  I brought my concerns to management after a certain foremans power tripping and ego became a concern . I was laid off the next week . Many workers I know don't plan on returning for these reasons and more . 

It's unfortunate that once you are hired the support you receive is very limited, especially when your immediate supervisor has different priorities than to support you. My immediate boss was too busy teaching at a university, running her own business, and schmoozing the brass to even give me the time of day. Not to mention her personal issues were impeding upon my initial training into the role. 

Should you take on a position with an otherwise good company I suggest you insist on support not from her assistant but herself. Let's see if you end up being a priority...in fact seek out her LinkedIn account and you will notice that the unfortunate listing of this company is NOT her priority.

Don't sign the job offer if it has a TERMINATION clause in it, have it reviewed by an employment lawyer.

I have been fortunate enough to have been with this company almost 11 years (so far :) ) I have always felt I've had the support and encouragement to reach beyond my assign responsibilities and strive for more. It never fails to amaze me the abundance of opportunities for growth this company has found.  It seems every week something bigger and better is in the works. They are determined to always be the best, and with their professional and passionate employees, they will always will be.
The management is very focused on teamwork and team-building,  This makes the work environment so much more fun, as I am surrounded by friends, not just co-workers.

If you are lucky enough to find a job opening at this almost nation-wide, ever growing company, I strongly suggest you apply immediately- you will not be disappointed.



Working at Modern Niagara was a masterclass in how *not* to run a company. The culture is built on fear, micromanagement, and ego, not leadership. Trust is nonexistent. Communication is passive-aggressive at best and openly hostile at worst.

Management seems far more interested in surveillance and control than supporting the people actually doing the work. Morale is predictably awful. Turnover is constant, which should tell you everything you need to know. Instead of asking why people keep leaving, leadership doubles down on blame and intimidation.

There’s a strong “us vs. them” mentality where technicians are treated as disposable, not skilled professionals. Concerns are dismissed, feedback is punished, and favoritism is obvious. Any workplace that requires this level of monitoring and control has already failed .

There's not many "typical" days at Modern Niagara which is great for those who can think and act on their toes.
Any employee can learn as much as they want, with support, about the many facets of the jobs, services and support that Modern provides. It's truly up to the individual where they want to take their career.
The hardest part is that some of the management aren't as transparent and helpful as one would require and this can cause heavy workloads if not put in check.
The most enjoyable part of working with MN is their unbelievable team spirit. They encourage growth, understanding and people's unique qualities to shine.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Never stressed at a job.. .most stress comes from lack of preparation... 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I'm not sure there is a culture due to high turnaround. But the work environment was Is Chaotic it's too top heavy. And the top is not trained properly... I seen 4 superintendents in 8 months. One down with a heart attack and  2 fired. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I was a foreman I can't say I had many bad days. Just alot of people running scared to lose their jobs... obviously im not talking about the tradesman...

What is the best part of working at the company?
No comment, thinking back on my time here I can only remember negatives when it came to how the business was handled at an executive level 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Expectations were always unrealistic, a super power across the country but would provide little to no respite wz for local expansion year after year

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I cannot speak on current culture but at the time the corporate side preached good culture and team building but never actually acted on it.

the workplace culture is toxic the supervisors are aware but take no action as a registered apprentice my entire apprenticeship  ended when i made the mistake of hiring on with this company  they just run good people into the ground until they quit they will not report hours to the apprenticeship board it was a total waste of time and effort I had to have the union dispatch me to a proper professional job and walking away from this company was the best and only choice i had because of the poor workmanship and toxic attitudes avoid Modern Niagara  at all costs there  are much better sheet metal company's in the lower mainland to work for/

Really good work environment from the second you join.  You get lots of great experience with a large variety of projects, tasks and opportunities to learn more and develop your skills As a trades person.  Very inclusive environment.  But in the end when the job is coming to a close be prepared because they will drop you like nothing,. Just the way the industry and especially they are!  Overall woukd do it again

Modern Niagara offices in Ottawa are located in a beautiful and functional new building. It is equipped with a common spaces like a kitchen with Starbucks coffee machine, and appliances to make sure employees an visitors have fresh and warm food at lunch time. It has a comfortable and full equipped meeting rooms, and a marvelous reading area with at any time you can go and rest your eyes from the computer and enjoy an splendid view.
