Mount Washington Alpine Resort

I worked at Mount Washington Alpine Resort for several years, both summer and winter. I thoroughly enjoyed my first season, but I believe I was just not aware of what was going on. Upper management is an absolute joke. Washy was sold to Vail Resorts a few years back and the corporate side of things became very obvious very quickly. They care about making money and not much else. Where there was once fun to be had working on a mountain is an amazing environment, feels like everywhere else. Identical uniforms, no charm, no uniqueness to be seen anywhere. You aren't even allowed to wear your own toque. Employees feel so expendable and if you aren't past your probation period, you can be fired at the drop of a hat. You have to fight tooth and nail to get a raise. I came back for a third season and recieved an extra 25¢, and eventually got another 25¢ raise for a promotion after bothering my boss about it for a month and a half. They want their employees to return but do nothing to show it or give much incentive. Getting to work in the winter wasn't too bad as there's a free bus for employees but sometimes in the morning the buses would be jam packed with guests and you wouldn't be able to get to work on time. (They may have changed the rules on that one, however.) Lift operations management is... alright. It seems at times that they don't know what they're doing so it can get really chaotic, but I do believe they're all trying their best. They're genuinely an amazing bunch of people running the team, but it can feel very clique-y. Working just one season on the mountain is really fun and you can keep your rose tinted glasses on and not have to see the ugly side of Washy. If you stay much longer than that, you'll see through the fun exterior. There are many on-location benefits to take advantage of such as a lift pass, free ski/snowboard rentals, free group lessons, 40% off clothes with the Mt Washington logo and 25% off in the store, free coffee/tea/hot chocolate. During the winter there's quite a bit of labour involved from digging in the maze gates with a pick axe, shoveling snow, raking the ramp, and bumping chairs. You'll also get some guests that you're amazed managed to get dressed on their own and will deliberately do the exact opposite of what you just told them 3 times. (It's incredible, truly.) 

All in all, I give Washy a 2/5. There was good times and bad times. I made some really awesome friends, had some wonderful bosses, learned how to ski, and generally had fun. But don't stay longer than one season if you're not interested in a mess of a company. 

It was an okay job, nice to get a pass and ski right after work and had the staff storage of leaving your stuff up there when not working for free. Early shifts and got off early around 10am or 12pm. Odd time you get asked if you want to work longer and watch over the front of the lodge and make sure nobody is parking longer than they should or shouldn't be there. 
Sometimes your helping vehicles get unstuck out of the snow or pushing a 2wd vehicle off of the ice lol. Putting up the lot full signs and directing traffic around the lots to find parking spaces.

Hardest part of the job would be dealing with the people on a busy weekend when all the lots get full first thing in the morning and then having to send them back down the mountain and get yell at or insulted lol. or the cold weather if you're not prepared

Worth working here for the benefits

You can expect horrible pay and a serious lack of communications. Head of guest services (Tammy) is a nightmare and management provides little to no support for staff. Bullying and pettiness is the name of the game at MW.  The directors seem great but in most departments you can expect to hate your job. There are people who have been there forever and refuse to accept new ideas and many unqualified 'managers'. It's a pretty unfortunate company that tries to incentivize staff by providing free skiing, but trust me, it isn't worth it. The novelty of the job wears off in days and don't expect management to care or do anything when you are unhappy or getting bullied in your position. Like any place, there are a few amazing staff members in various departments but the overall feel amongst the staff is misery. All I can say is good luck to those who try to work at MW.

Do not give this resort your money. I worked here for 2 years and gave them 150% effort for minimum wage and i was treated very unfairly and not respected the way i deserve. The management gives the bike park trail crew barely enough budget to keep the trails from falling apart let alone build enough actually good new trails. They do not care about the bike park very much and they certainly only care about making money off of rich tourist families. I used to love this resort but in the last few years my experiences have cause me to extremely dislike it.  It is unfourtunate that this is the main alpine resort on the Island because they do not deserve your money. Try to spend your money somewhere else becasuse you will be wasteing it here.😢

It goes without saying, if you don't ski or snowboard or aren't into mountain culture this job isn't for you. Long commutes (if you don't live up there) and lowish pay, but is made up for it with the seasons pass. Without it nobody would work here. Great opportunity to make new friends and make the most of your staff pass. Works best as a part time gig. I worked/work rentals and is probably one of the easier jobs, different departments will obviously have a different expeirence.

day started at 10/am, went until 3or 4 pm. Learned to clean thoroughly and be a team player.  Some housekeeping managers were easier to get along with and learn from then others..  Fellow workers and supervisors can be picky and hard to get along with at times,  but a person learns to think about the other person's point of view..  The hardest part of the job would be that it can be physically taxing and sometimes hard on the back

The job and location itself is super unique and typically a great experience at other resorts . Unfortunately with the current management and some other employees , working as an operator at mount Washington includes witnessing and experiencing intimidation , discrimination and many other unprofessional behaviours . I would recommend looking elsewhere for ski resort “culture” . 

Mount Washington Alpine Resort has the most fun workplace I've ever experienced. The friends you make, the energy of everyone you work with and the guests you see is just awesome. Unless you are living on the hill, though, your work-life balance will take a big hit, just because of the commute times. Perfect job for a ski bum willing to burn a bit of their savings to have an awesome winter. 

Worked there for Multiple years the complete inaction on the part of the company to combat the explosive inflation rates and pay their people what they need even just to commute to work.

In addition management engages in unprofessional boys club style locker room talk and is homo and transphobic. And will hire and fire accordingly 

The only perk of working for Mt Washington is the free skii pass. Other than that it's a pretty poor place to work. It's so disorganized and mismanaged that you probably want to avoid working here all together. There is a lot of people working here that have huge attitudes, and you'll probably get talked down to on a daily basis.
