NIAGARA SUPPORT SERVICES

My experience at Niagara Support Services had its highlights, most notably the joy of working with clients and watching them grow and succeed. Seeing their smiles and progress was by far the most rewarding part of the job. Unfortunately, that’s where most of the positives ended.

Working in the high behavioral home, several issues became clear—issues that, if addressed, could greatly enhance the work environment and overall employee satisfaction. A major challenge was the pervasive culture of mistrust, often due to incidents of theft. It’s hard to feel part of a team when you can’t trust the people you work with. A stronger focus on fostering respect and accountability would go a long way in building a more unified workplace.
Gossip seemed to replace meaningful communication, and rather than having open, professional dialogue, many conversations revolved around negative rumors. Encouraging a culture of transparency and mutual respect could dramatically improve the atmosphere and help employees feel more valued.

Another significant issue was the lack of qualified staff. Time and again, we were working alongside individuals who were inexperienced or undertrained for the demands of the job. This not only created safety concerns but placed additional pressure on more experienced staff to pick up the slack. A solid training and development program would not only alleviate this strain but also lead to better client care. There was a constant shuffle due to call-ins and late arrivals, which left homes understaffed and employees overwhelmed and clients anxious. Instituting better support systems or incentives for reliability could stabilize the workforce and reduce the exceptionally high turnover rate.

Management, unfortunately, wasn’t much help in these areas. While some employees received recognition for their hard work, it often felt selective and based more on personal relationships than actual performance. A fairer approach to acknowledging everyone’s contributions would go a long way in boosting morale.
Lastly, the compensation just didn’t match the level of responsibility. The emotional, physical, and mental demands of this role are substantial, and the pay simply didn’t reflect that. Offering a more competitive salary would not only help retain staff but also acknowledge the challenging nature of the job.

In short, Niagara Support Services has potential, especially with the rewarding experience of working directly with clients. However, addressing these issues—mistrust, gossip, lack of recognition, and poor staffing—would make a huge difference in both the employee experience and, ultimately, client care.

This company operates group homes for adults with special needs. While the work itself is very meaningful and the individuals supported are wonderful, the way the organization treats its staff is extremely discouraging.

Nearly every new policy or memo includes a warning of “disciplinary action,” creating an environment of constant pressure rather than support. Staff are frequently expected to work short-staffed because overtime is no longer approved. Ironically, when employees went above and beyond to cover shifts in the past, they were later told they worked “too much overtime.”

The company used this as justification to remove small gestures of appreciation like Christmas gifts and staff recognition, while senior leadership awarded themselves significant pay raises. Frontline staff, meanwhile, have not received a wage increase in over a decade.

Two unions represent staff, yet one has been without a contract for nearly three years due to the company’s refusal to agree to even minimal raises. Attendance policies are strict to the point of being punitive—employees risk discipline for minor time-clock discrepancies or legitimate absences, including bereavement leave.

Full-time employees receive no meaningful benefits or incentives beyond more responsibility. Paid holidays have been eliminated, workloads continue to grow, and the company’s primary response is often more threats of discipline rather than support or appreciation.

The work itself can be rewarding, but the organization’s management culture and policies make it very difficult to stay motivated. I would caution anyone considering a position here to ask clear questions about staffing, pay, and expectations before accepting an offer.

Sad....a truly sad, sick place to work. The other staff were somewhat nice, but mgmt was hideous!! And they had their own little *minders*, as if we were supposed to look upon them as 'Dear Leader'..lol. I was going through a very stressful time in my life, asked for some help, especially with a bit of flexibility on shifts, and was basically told to 'shut up and do what you are told.' It wasn't until I was throwing up blood in the staff office and then passed out, and an ambulance was called, that they 'accommodated' me. They gave me one shift a week. How nice. They then canned me before the end of my 3 month probation, saying I missed too many staff meetings (I had to drive 25 minutes 2 ways for 2 hours pay!! Ughh..say, gas prices, anyone??) Talk about NOT supporting good mental hygiene, which EVERY non-profit in Canada should be forced to do!! And good mental hygiene comes with solid work hours (consistent), accommodation (EVERY advert on this website, at the end, says they will 'accommodate' the disabled/differently abled, but that is a LOAD), tolerance, and good staffing (by that, I mean schedule 3 staff per 1 client for ALL waking hours, rather than nickle and dime with 1 to 1, with a high needs client and a strung-out staff!!) Forget this!!!! This is ANTIsocial-services!!

The pay is great and that's about it. The agency doesn't care about their part time employees and it's clear. Always running short and expected to stay HOURS beyond your scheduled shift if someone calls in. On call supervisors will not come in to help if you've been stuck on shift due to a call in. Constantly working short, probably because the turn over rate is at an all time high from the lack of perks of working here. Always working shifts all over the place with no consistency, ZERO work/life balance. A set schedule for part time employees would certainly help maintain efficant staffing levels and has been brought up by a significant amount of part time employees - always dismissed by management. 
Management never listens to staff on the floor or even considers their opinion. Have been numerous situations where staff have voiced concerns about client moves, saftey, advocating for clients and everything is often over looked and not considered. It really is to bad because the job is rewarding and the clients are great. Overall, extremely hard to have a life/family while working for this agency. 

I was skeptical about working here after reading the reviews, but I have to say I enjoyed working here. Most of the management is very supportive and making improvements to be involved more in the day-to-day of front line workers. In the year I have worked here they now also show more appreciation for staff with events such as Christmas events for each residential program, cards delivery, and management makes it a point to recognize good work or provide positive feedback where necessary. Of course every job comes with its own stresses but I still would recommend anyone at NSS especially if you are looking to advance your experience working with behavioral individuals. There is always constant training on understanding BSPs and the job itself in general. Overall, great place to work!! 

Management very unprofessional and inappropriate. Very unsafe working conditions. A lot of dangerous errors made. Staff undertrained and work short all the time. Desperate for staff so will keep anyone that will take shifts. You won't get time off and work every weekend as a part time staff. Filthy homes with buildings not cared for properly. Unrealistic expectations put on staff. Management lies to client families to make it seem like they aren't neglected. If it wasn't for a handful of awesome frontline workers the place should be shut down.

I work here for a short period of time. The management and the co-workers were horrible people. I was let go for an incident that didn't happen. The co-workers lied. They were able to continue working together to get their stories straight while I was put on leave. Absolutely horrible management
The co-workers never trust them. They will talk behind your back as they did to everyone else including the manager. The pay is certainly not on par with the job. Some people think that's a good salary but it's not even close to what any support worker should be getting paid.

The clients you get to meet other than that absolutely nothing

Everything from scheduling to health and safety to having no voice at all

Horrendous and in supportive beyond compare

Never like the day before. Every day is different and they do not value consistency

This place offers great wages, but it comes with a cost. Niagara Support Services has a reputation to let their staff suffer from work place violence and bullying. 
The work place becomes this way due to negligence and bullying behaviours from the management team.
It’s unfortunate when you work with a clientele that need support, yet the violence within the programs is unhealthy.
When you have problems like this taking place, one must wonder how well are the needs of the clients really being; met
